Sporting Lisbon vs. Manchester United - Wednesday 19 September 2007 (19:45 BST)

Sporting dealt double blow

Sporting dealt double blowUnited's opponents in next week's Champions League Group F opener, Sporting Lisbon, have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of the start of this season's European campaign.

Brazilian striker Derlei, who scored Sporting's first goal in the new Portuguese season, has been ruled out of the group stages with torn cruciate ligaments in his left knee, while full-back Pedro Silva has suffered a similar fate and will also be out for six months.

Derlei, a summer recruit from Dynamo Moscow, was a part of FC Porto's UEFA Cup and Champions League winning sides, so has plenty of experience on the European stage.

The 32-year-old sustained his injury in training last week and tests have revealed the worst likely outcome. He will be out until in the New Year.

Also facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines is fellow summer signing Pedro Silva, who recently underwent surgery on his knee. The 25-year-old Brazilian full-back also picked up his injury during training. He will miss all six Group F matches against United, AS Roma, and Dynamo Kiev.

After three games, Sporting are third in Portugal's Liga after beating Academica 4-1 on the opening day of the season, followed by 1-0 defeat to rivals Porto, and a 1-0 win over lowly Belenenses.

we never play 4-4-2 away from home in europe

Thats the reason why we struggle away cause that stupid defensive formation, lets play the way we know

two wingers and two strikers and dont care a feck if away or home

Yes, Rooney will most likely take a part in the game in one way or another. Can't wait to see him in action.

probably the right players, except Tevez will be asked to play on the left wing for Fergie's 4-5-1 formation.

Rio was feeling his groin after that last ditch block yesterday & I wouldn't want to risk him being missing for Chelsea. The rest of the bench (apart from PIG) have got to start against Chelsea too.

We'll have to play on the counter a lot against these. They've got good attacking players, but I think we can get at their defence. I reckon 2-1 to Utd with Tevez getting his first goal for Utd & Ronnie/Nani getting the other one.

Yeah i agree, i'd prefer a 442 but it never happens is all I'm saying.

Anderson won't play, you muppet.

Premier League
FA Cup
Champions League
Carling Cup

In that order. Champions League is a competition for teams that finish 1st to 4th (not champions) and the team who bores the other team more wins. Thats why its useless to me. Unless thingys change, i am sticking by my words :)

Champions League is far more prestigous than any other club trophy in the world.

There's not enough experience in tha side, and i doubt we're going to give Anderson the playmaker role after his first performance and apparent lack of fitness.

Nani, AndySon & Ronaldo have plenty of experience playing in Portugal, Pique in Spain, & Tevez in Argentina/Brazil. AndySon wouldn't be the playmaker Carrick would.

I agree, everyone thinks he'll be brought into the team from nowhere just because he played in Portugal last season

He showed against Sunderland that he's no where near ready let alone to be considered for an away Champions League tie

There's no chance he'll start :nono:

AndySon might not be ready to play a full game in the prem, but the pace in the CL is slower & he'll never be ready unless he plays games to get match fit. With Chelsea up next in the prem key players will be rested...Sporting aren't a Milan, or Real FFS.

Nobody knows what the team will be...SAF likes his little surprises. I've just picked the team I would be happy with:rolleyes:

I'm sure such complacency was no small factor in how we found ourselves bottom of our group two seaosns past, and slipping up against Copenhagen and Celtic away from home as we did last term.

None of that thanks, it only leads to a whole world of unnecessary trouble and embarrassment on our part.

Putting together such an...untested line up would most likely lead to our play and being disjointed and us handing the initiative to Sporting from the off.

Three days separation between matches, as well as some players sucha as Louis, Teves e.t.c. only going to benefit with the more minutes they play, i don't see the sense in nor think that fatigue should be playing so high in our thoughts in the middle of September.

Anderson will definitely be on the bench I reckon and if we're winning by a couple of goals he should be brought on for some match fitness. I'd start with Nani over Giggs who I'd rest for Chelsea. I would love for Pique to be given a chance at Rb but don't see it happening. Wes is a great substitute and a very good centre back but I think we should try something different as it is definitely a weakness.

It'll probably be 4-3-3

Considering our record away from home in Europe, I don't mind that. I'd like to see Saha in the team though in place of Giggs and maybe give Pique a chance at RB.

The Reds will have Wayne Rooney and Owen Hargreaves back in action for the trip to Lisbon this week.

United have been without Rooney since the opening day of the season when he suffered a metatarsal fracture in his left foot, while Hargreaves has been troubled by a knee injury.

Rooney had been expected to play a part in Saturday's 1-0 win over his former club Everton, but Reds boss Sir Alex opted to rest the 21-year-old striker, who instead trained over the weekend in preparation for Wednesday's visit to Portugal.

"They'll both be ok for Wednesday," Sir Alex told MUTV after the victory at Goodison Park.

"We took medical advice on Wayne and as he had only started training on Monday, we felt that five days' training was maybe a bit short.

"But he trained on Saturday morning, Sunday and he'll train right through until Wednesday. By that point he will definitely be available for the match against Sporting Lisbon."

4-3-3 (or 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 - whatever we like calling it these days) with Rooney on the bench. We have Chelsea on Sunday remember, so although I'd personally start Saha, I actually think he'll only give him 45 mins. Tough game, but I fancy a 0-2. Anderson is still struggling with fitness for some reason - don't expect to see him taking part at all......

If Saha doesn't start then there is something going on between Fergie and him.

Referee:
Herbert Fandel (GER)

nooooooooooooo:mad:

why do we always get Fandel away in CL ? I might call Benitez, he is the conspiracy wise

Keep Scholes miles from Portugal :D
