Tottenham are closing in on a double swoop for Portuguese midfielder Tiago and Brazilian left-back Gilberto, BBC Sport understands.

A deal for Tiago, 26, who used to play for Chelsea and is now at Juventus, should be done in the next day or so.

Gilberto's contract expires in the summer and the 31-year-old looks set to complete his move from Hertha Berlin.

Tottenham's only signing so far in the January transfer window is Cardiff full-back Chris Gunter.

Manager Juande Ramos has been short of options in defence due to injuries and Gilberto's expected arrival should provide cover for Gareth Bale, who is out for up to three months with an injured foot.

The experienced Brazilian, who played for his national team at the 2006 World Cup, can also play in midfield.

Tiago joined Chelsea in 2004 for around £10m, but lasted just one season in the Premier League before moving to Lyon for £6.82m.

The Portugal international spent two years in France and signed for Juventus at the start of this season.

Tottenham have also been linked with an £8m move for Rangers right-back Alan Hutton, despite the player already rejecting a move to White Hart Lane.

Tiago had been terrible this year. He is tipped as one of the worst transfers Juventus had ever did.

He seemed to be a fairly good player at Lyon as well. I reckon he would be a good acquisition for Spurs.

Another left back? What about Gareth Bale, Ekotto and Lee Young Pyo?
Bale may be out for the rest of the season and likewise Ektto (such has been our extreme bad luck with defender injuries this season), so Gilberto is needed until then at least. He can also play in LM.

So Lee is currently our only fit LB and he's right-footed.

That isnt a problem, Lahm is right footed also and is one of the best left backs out there.

Gilberto on the brink of Tottenham transfer

The 31-year-old Brazilian international left-back is out of contract at Hertha Berlin in the summer and would be available on a Bosman free transfer, yet Juande Ramos is keen to sign him now.

The two clubs have now agreed a fee in the region of £1million for Gilberto, who has flown to England to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical at White Hart Lane to rubberstamp the move.

Would be a good signing for Spurs. Would free up Bale to play at LM. Ramos certainly knows what he is doing. They may make a good UEFA cup run as well this season.

Were you sweating a bit when Keane scored?
Actually I was half hoping they'd get a draw to add to your fixture congestion but I knew they'd find a way to blow it. Since Glaston's not turned up I have to say that the Ramolution looks like the same Jol story: flatter to deceive; squander a lead; wilt when the pressure comes; crap defending; even crapper goalkeeping. It's the same old story and it ain't glory, glory (alleluia).

... I despise Arsenal, but more than that I despise small-time twats such as yourself.
Seems there's a lot despising going on in your life. One can only wonder.

He has now failed two Spurs medicals. I wonder if Spurs will do the deal if the transfer price drops.

The reported media story is that he passed the first routine medical on Sunday, but failed a 2nd one (presumably a more in-depth examination) on Wednesday. This of course begs the question as to why he needed a 2nd medical if he passed the first, unless something showed up in the first that they wanted to look at more closely.

Or it could just be Levy playing silly buggers in an attempt to screw down the price. That wouldn't surprise me.

Gilberto signing now officially confirmed.

I'm pleased with this one. A current Brazilian international has to be good news ..... here's hoping he can come straight into the game this Saturday.
