From what I remember at the time, Pogue, I don't think the hitch was money. I stand to be corrected, but didn't he feel(rightly as it turns out), that we were really after Hargreaves, so the negotiations stalled?
I dunno what happened. But I know we were very close to signing him but didn't end up matching their asking price.
Might have been due to behind-the-scenes negotiating with Bayern might have been down to us refusing to get ripped off. Who knows?

We didnt walk away, we were doing our usual fannying about haggling, barce came in with a better offer and they were the player's preference. Had we been his preference ive no doubts we'd have matched the bid eventually.

You're implying that 2 or 3 million quid gets devalued, just because it's seems smaller when compared to a multi-million transfer fee.
The thing is, as far as the money-men are concerned, 2 million quid is 2 million quid, whichever way you look at it.
seemed to me at the time senna was a way to show bayern hargreaves wasnt our only option...but the germans didnt blink. Its a long process at a club like utd, imo, to agree that you're going to pay 18mil plus for a player so the deal doesnt break down easily once that decision is made...if the player wants to come that is...which the berb does.

If someone is worth 6mil in the clubs eyes and the sellers are asking for 8mil im sure the money men look at that and say thats 33% more than we value him at...
whereas at 28mil and the seller is holding out for 30mil i think they'll think thats (gets calculator.....) 7.2% over the odds....
Besides these differences are often settled in terms of relative success the club has and so pay for themselves...ill be staggered if we walk away because there is say a 5mil difference in valuation. It may go to the wire but i'd still expect it to happen.

Not really, im happier than ive been for months. Its a done deal, we almost always go through a protracted process. But something ive been crying out for, for over a year is going to happen and we will be miles better off for it.

Seriously though i dont know why clubs dont just get on with it a bit more efficiently. It would help both sides to get the deal done sooner rather than later and im pretty sure everyone and their dog knows eventually the deal will happen. Could it really not be settled in a day with all the parties in a room...3 long meetings or whatever.
The ashely cole one was a joke..will he wont he until midnight on the transfer window..of course he was gonna bloody go.

Spurs are looking for a figure and if we dont match that then they will walk away with their player, i hope we arent being stubborn by a f million quid, but at the same time i hope they just give in and let the player move for a reasonably price of 28 million.

The thing is though, Gus, the quicker the negotiation, the more it favours the sellers(unless he is shit, and they want to get rid).
United know if they appear overly keen, they will pay a few million extra. While price doesn't matter to us, that sort of money is sizeable, even at a club of our size. The simple fact is, when the deal is done, we will have the same player regardless of how long it took, or what we paid. If we show a little patience, and get the player cheaper, then why wouldn't we?

I think this is a good point....my hunch is that berbatov doesnt even fit the way ramos is going to set them up this season so he's more than happy to sell him if he gets a good deal. But hey maybe its wishful talking...i just think him and poyet will have sat down at the end of the season and thought i dont think we can keep him, certainly not a happy berbatov so lets plan without him but obviously that stays private to get the best possible deal.

I never doubted you were a true-fan; you always struck me as one. It's just those terms tend to be used by the younger Pro Evolution generation, who do tend to be rather plastic in their support.
Just a warning -- I know I'm not the only one who hates those silly nicknames.
We're not talking about HP finance for a used car here - we're talking about a few hundred million for a new stadium: not easy to arrange in these credit-squeeze times.
In any case, stadium finance is just one big element out of many. There's also finding a suitable site, acquiring the land and gaining plannning permission. All of these elements either are already in place - or will already be in place - before any question of selling the club arises, and would considerably boost any asking price.
We've been through all this already - so let's just agree to disagree. I'll just remind you later when events prove you wrong.
