Rafael

He's fantastic.

Btw - Does anyone remember a guy called Fabio?

Turns out we actually have another one of those gems waiting for a chance. And he's supposed to be even better.

Prefer him to Bosingwa already.

Evra exposed the fact Bosingwa isnt very good defensively either, already this season.

Obviously Bosingwa is a more complete player. But not as much more as you'd expect from a player 7 years senior to him.

He's very impressive. His defensive game will come with games. It might be a slight liability now over a season BUT offensively he's better then brown and Neville - without question and so could offer a lot this season

Evra was 25 when he came to United and he suffered from bad positioning and teams using his size as a weakness but rafael seems to have the same determination to over come these things and we missed him when he went off

The differences in mentality could be the difference. Rafael is fearless, Fabio has looked edgy.

I'm sure Fabio will get his chance when he is fully fit and when he does he will show that he is just as good as his bro. Give him a chance, he has only joined and since then has suffered a couple of injuries. The qualities are obviously there in Fabio as well, albeit similar to Rafael.

Yeah Fabio's looked edgy in his one first team appearance where the ball never came out to him :wenger:

Forget the fact he's already scored two class goals for the reserves.

He looked edgy in his first reserve game too, which is the only other time I've seen him to be fair.

And yes I do know he scored a goal in that game too.

fabio will come good. I just think maybe he's not used to just being part of a team rather then the focus but it'll come and the fact he needs games. He's shown glimpses of why he should be as good as rafael.

Regardless though to get them both and at 2.6m each looks a steal at present :)

He was positionally about as steady as a one-legged spastic after 12 pints, which is slightly concerning. However, today was further evidence of the player he may well become in the future. Just how does he ghost past players as if they're not there?

He should work on his defending. He defends too much like a winger. Positionally a bit suspect and follows his marker into midfield which is a bit worrying.

That's what i love about him, like an old Giggs, doesn't need the Ronaldo esque tricks most of the time, just great to watch going forward. Feel on edge when he's defending still though, hopefully it'll come with time or change his position?

He is 18 and from a league that doesn't allow defending. It's hardly a surprise he is caught out of position sometimes.

Defensively, he is really bad imo.
Aalborgs biggest chances came after Rafael went off. He certainly has a lot to learn defensively, but the opposition can't score if they don't have the ball. He is excellent in possession, doesn't look fazed by playing on the big stage, and is perhaps an even better offensive outlet than Evra. I'm mightily impressed by him.

I merged the two Rafael threads and made one super Rafael thread.

Please try to check if there is already a thread open before starting a new one. Ta.

Spot on. However, he's still very young and from what I saw tonight he is equiped to play at the very highest level. He will make mistakes but if he learns from them, we have some player at our club.

Rubbish. It was against City, he got subbed because they kept pinging high balls up to Evra, and the City player won every one.

Rafael just wonders around, poor in the air, and clumsy in the challenge.

You're saying Evra played better in his debut, against City, than Rafael did tonight?

Jesus wept.

P.S. Much, much easier to teach a talent like that how to improve his defending than it would be to teach any other defender in our squad how to cause problems in their final third.

He's raw but feck me, he's gonna be fantastic :D

It was not just in his debut Evra was terrible defensively. He was from January to the summer in every game he played.

I disagree, a player like him isnt made to be a defender and will always be caught out at the back I rate him highly, just not as a RB, he is gonna mature into some winger though

Where possition did Evra start his career? As a striker.

If Evra can change from a striker at 19 to one of the worlds best left backs, then im sure Rafael can improve on his defensive side of his game.

That's what they said about Evra.

Evra is actually a good defender though, although he has been good when put on the wing for United, we are deep on wing now so he isnt needed there, we have no LB anywhere near his class though

Deffo. We will never see Wes or Nev causing real problems in the final third, not like Evra does or Rafael will.

Agree 100% Doc.

People need to remember that he's 18 years old for Christs sake!

This lad is a top top talent and is an extremely exciting player to watch out for now and especially in the future.

when your talking about positioning, evra suffered from that for a good while before he found the right balance between attacking and defending.

There were numerous occasions he was out of position, heinze too I might add.

If your attacking like Rafael does, it's not that much of a suprise.

As long as he's in front of the attacker, he does well more often then not. It's just he's so offensive his positioning suffers meaning he's not really giving himself a chance to be classed as a great defender

However, he's a fecking good attacking full back....

Poor in the air? He's not that bad - certainly wasn't challenged in the air tonight anyway.....

Clumsy in the challenge? He's catching up after missing a year of football. There are so many reasons why it's unwise to be critical of his defensive play today. If he's as bad as some people make out, why'd he start today?

I think most people are aware his apparent strengths are greater then his perceived weaknesses and he will improve with more games.

All this jumping into tackles etc - watch neville ..he's dived in 4/5 times this season alone. Is he a poor defender for it? ..

Sure, but was he a natural LB when put there by his coach in France?

United are doing the right thing with the twins. Getting them over early and teaching them the defensive side of the game. If they came over at 22+ then it would be too late for them to adapt.

The modern full backs at the top level have to be able to go forward almost as well as they can defend.

Couldnt' give a feck about the defending side of his game to be honest, I'm not even bullshitting.

For me, it's a breath of fresh air to see a young player like that.

I agree, its good to see a youngster with that kind of confidence.

Yet all people want to do is knock him and say "he cant defend". He will adapt.

The way he skips past players for fun reminds me of how a Argentine midget playing for Barca does it. He just breezes through them like they don't exist.

People are too hard on him defensively. He's not bad as some people suggest, he's just not yet at the level of a Manchester United full back. And it seems that some people for some reason think he can't get any better at it either. I think this kid has got what it takes, and he'll be our regular in just a couple of years (if not next year!). He's brilliant offensively, and he just needs to gain some positional sense (largely an experience issue), as well as learn when to dive in and when not to. I'm extremely excited.

One more thing - it was Fabio that was touted as the better prospect.

He scored a few goals from left back in the Under 17 World Cup. Apparently, he’s brilliant in the air from corners.

Not as good defensively though so he won't be liked on here;)

Never seen a full back attack as much as Fabio.

I hope the United coaches do not convert him to being a traditional English full back. Like Evra he adds an extra dimension to the attacking third.

Anyway being defensively naive would not be such an issue if it's balanced by playing three centre midfielders.
