Rafael

This is not a pessimistic post but I feel we should wait for a few more years before we pass judgement on Rafael. It was a pathetic Danish side with hardly any players of international class

Well - I saw him play against Juventus at the beginning of the season when he hadn't played for a year - he looked pretty special then - raw, but special!

Rafael earns rave reviews

Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic believe 18-year-old Brazilian full-back Rafael has a big future ahead of him at Old Trafford.

The teenager has made short work of impressing everyone, including his team-mates, and turned in another fearless display against Aalborg. His third outing for the Reds bristled with the attacking intent you expect of a Brazilian, but he also doesn't need an invitation to tackle.

"He looks to be a very good player and he is ready to play for Manchester United," says Evra. "He is the future of the club. Rafael and his brother Fabio don’t seem to feel any pressure, they love to play football and Rafael does it with a smile on his face."

Rafael didn't look out of place alongside Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in United's back four, and he is fast becoming a legitimate challenger for the right-back slot with Gary Neville and Wes Brown.

"He has a great future in front of him," added Vidic. "I hope he can become a great player. He has a big personality to play in the Champions League at only 18 years old. To go forward and shoot like he did was very impressive. He has the confidence to go forward and the pace to get back as well."

Ferguson sees big future for Rafael
Wednesday, October 1, 2008
Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Rafael Da Silva as Manchester United's next big thing.

With captain Gary Neville remaining in Manchester, Ferguson stunned most observers last night by plumping for Rafael above Wes Brown for the right-back slot in the Champions League match against Danish side Aalborg.

A three-goal triumph justified Ferguson's decision, particularly as Rafael was outstanding before he was forced out of the action midway through the second half.

At just 18, Rafael has plenty of time to improve. However, like fellow Brazilian Rodrigo Possebon, who was equally impressive against Middlesbrough last week before Emanuel Pogatetz's horrible tackle consigned him to a spell on the sidelines, it might not be long before Ferguson realises he simply cannot leave Rafael out.

'We have great hopes for the lad,' said Ferguson. 'He has impressed us a lot.

'Some people might have been a bit surprised I picked him over Wes Brown but I feel the boy has something special.'

Rafael, his twin brother Fabio and Possebon all came to United's attention during a youth tournament in Hong Kong three years ago.

A member of the Brazil Under-17 side at last year's FIFA World Cup, Rafael signed for the Old Trafford outfit in January this year but due to work permit regulations was not able to play a competitive game until this summer.

His excellent performance in Denmark last night merely earned more praise from his manager.

'Rafael has no fear of playing and has great belief in himself,' said Ferguson.

'He is only 18 but he has started very well. He did well against Middlesbrough last week and he has progressed again.

'He is really positive and has a great chance in the future.'

Fergie has already showed a special trust in him by starting him with the first team stars. The only youngsters getting that chance in recent years is Ronaldo, Rooney,Evans and Fletcher.

last night rafael made me think of things that i really shouldn't be thinking of an 18 year old brazilian boy. he was awesome.

Why can't he move his hands properly?

When he was signalling to come off, he kept trying to do make the "sub me" gesture, but he couldn't rotate his fingers round each other. What a weirdo

That's not right. Rodrigo's never been involved with the Brazil set-up.

Had a great game going forward last night. I just wish he wouldnt go to ground so easily while defending.

Elliott they all played in Nike Premium Cup with their club teams, they played it in Hong Kong that year.

Didn't you point out that Bosingwa has been a bit average in the Prem so far?

Yes. So far, but he's impressed for Portugal and he must be good to be worthy of our and Chelsea's attention, especially for that price.

He hasn't shown anything special in the league yet though, so why would he get picked in the Premier League XI?

I never said he was a bad player.

I'm still salivating over the thought of Fabio getting a chance as by all accounts he's even better than Rafael. Although he does have to get past God, which is no easy task i will admit.

The thing that works in rafaels favour and not so much fabios, is that rafael offers something different at rb over brown and neville.
Fabio is similar to evra in that hes an attacking full back but not in his league yet. so fabio may get his chance if evras injured or in need of a rest.
Full backs:

Brown - Great defensively, poor offensively.
Neville - Good in attack, good in defence.
Rafael - Great in attack, suspect (so far) in defence.

Evra - Awsome in attack, great in defence.
O'shea - Decent defensively, tall.
Fabio - Great in attack, suspect (so far) in defence we assume, although hes an unknown quantity.

Bit harsh on Neville, before his injury he was great in defence and very good in attack.

Rafael is exciting in the same way Ronaldo was exciting when he came on for his debut against Bolton five seasons ago. Like a breath of fresh air; you can't help but smile when he has the ball.

And Fabio is supposed to be even better going forward. I haven't seen him yet, but if that's true he must make Dani Alves look like Wes Brown.

think I've figured it out

rafael is actually fabio .. the better one .. he is helping out his brother by building a reputation for him
the real rafael is pretending to be fabio and is faking an injury to lay low

they will go back to their real selves soon and the real fabio being fab wont have much trouble breaking into the side

a perfect plan .. or so they thought

Drunken shite in the pub :

Say Rafael takes a knock just before half time, but Fabio isnt in the squad, and Fergie doesn't wanna use up one of his 3 subs. They go into the dressing room, and Fabio puts on Rafa's shirt.

Would they notice? We came to a conclusion :

No.

We'd know it was Fabio as soon as he scored, as he invariably would.

I can tell the difference!

The Da Saliva twins? ***io and Ra***el?

Quite apt, really.

This is not a pessimistic post but I feel we should wait for a few more years before we pass judgement on Rafael. It was a pathetic Danish side with hardly any players of international class for them. So, we should not hail him as the next Evra or whatever till he develops further and get more games under his belt.

While Rafeal does undoubtedly has potential, we should allow him to develop at his own time, gradually be eased into more first team matches. I 'd hate it if we heap too much pressure on the young lad's 18 year old shoulder comparing him with past internationals. Then, if he plays a stinker against a top rate EPL team, he would be slagged off as the next Kleberson or something....

Give him time to develop people. Stop clamouring for him to be in the first XI ahead of Neville and Brown. That is just plain daft

I think you're right mate.
The quality of opposition was not the best in the world, by a long way.
Fantastic debut, looks to be the dogs bollocks going forward, but naive defensively. With the quality and experience we have in the back four he will only get better and better.
Star in the making.

He showed more attacking endeavour than anderson's done in all his games for us put together.

Actually this is a bit harsh on Brown nowadays. his attack is getting much better and is starting to approach Neville for attacking.

Who put in the Left Foot cross for Ronaldo's champions league final goal. And Brown has already had an assist for (I think another left foot cross) this season - and we haven't scored all that many goals - forget who it was against.

So his crossing with either foot is improving. Not sure I would say poor in attack is all!

Was just trying to simplify what they bring to the team, brown has the defence, rafael has the attack and on his day neville has both.

Ah. Seemed like nothing more than a knock to me. Played on for quite a bit. Probably ready for Blackburn IMO.

He will improve defensively as time goes on, and he's top class offensively which puts him ahead of Neville, who is average at both at the minute, for me. I doubt he will ever retain his form after the long-term injury.

Does anyone think that he will play against Blackburn? His performance against Aalborg was probably the best we have had from a right back this season. Does he deserve the spot?
