Using location as a tagline: because I'm just not
Seems to be playing more as a traditional right/left winger, as opposed to the free role he's usually given (which he played against Chelsea for the 25 minutes he was on).

What I mean by this is that instead of shooting Obviously he's only been back for 6 games (Chelsea, Bolton, Villareal, Aab, Borough and Blackburn), and in that time he's made 3 goals (2 for Rooney, 1 for Berba) and scored 2 (Boro and Bolton).

I mean say what you will about his attitude on the pitch, but so far he seems far more willing to make goals this season (seeing as his assist count went down as his goal tally went up last year).

Yeah, but he isnt fit that is clear all credit to him for playing like that

I doubt Ronaldo will ever score 42 goals in a season again so if he's getting more assists then it makes up for it. I'm sure he'll still be pretty prolific this season, but at the moment he's still re-gaining fitness. He didn't have any pre-season at all, so he hasn't had any practice matches as such and instead has been brought back into the thick of it, where despite not being 100% by his exceptionally high standards, he's still scored two goals and got three assists. Not many wingers can say that.

It's funny how people say he wasnt the best player in the world after 42 goals, ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm you bet he was and is although his 06-07 form suits the current united more. To say last year wasnt special fir him, is liverpool like, he scored all the fcking time

I think he'll be prolific this season as well. He's had plenty of chances in the last few games, and if he was 100% I'm sure he'd have added to his tally. He's a natural goalscorer.

25 will suit us well, especially if he scores v Arse, Chle, and Pool, not a big game player  again

Yes, SAF is trying to construct the team more around Berbatov and Rooney. Looks like he's not so confident about keeping Ronaldo anymore.

Its because Fergie mostly plays 4-4-2. We will play with 2 wingers and 2 strikers whereas when Queiroz was around, we played with 4 forwards who fluidly interchanged positions while attacking.

Firstly, we did not play 4-4-2 yesterday. We played 4-2-3-1. And secondly, we did not play 4-4-2 when Carlos was here because we did not have players who can play it after Keane peaked and Ruud left. A proper striker and two midfielders who can bomb into the box are a must for any 4-4-2. Now that we have a proper striker in Berbatov and two hard working midfielders in Fletcher and Anderson, we can play 4-4-2 and variations again.

Anderson and Fletcher made more forward and incisive runs than Giggs did. We played 4-4-2 - neither of our central midfielders yesterday play a holding role well as both are box to box.

:lol:Bollocks. We played a 4-2-3-1 yesterday with Giggs, Ronaldo and Rooney behind Berbatov. Berbatov and Ronaldo interchanged a couple of times and Rooney and Ronaldo swapped wings.

Hard to shape the squad around a player who's coming back from injury and is far from full cardiovascular fitness. Whether or not the team revolves around Ronaldo, and whether or not he returns more to the "free role" many say he had last year remains to be seen. But I won't be surprised if even once he does return to full fitness, the shape of the team looks a bit different because of the addition of Berbatov. But whatever the shape and style in which we attack, if Ronadlo gets healthy he will be a devastating weapon once again.

He got 1 on 1 with the keeper several times yesterday and could have had a hatrick. I dont know what yer talking abouts.

well you say that but he's missed two one on ones so that could have been 4 goals in 6 games but obviously it's just the two - in spite of him not being 100% fit?

I think he'll have a great season again and he will get plenty of assists. (hopefully)

That is utter bollocks.

We struggled without Ronaldo this season.Ronaldo is coming back from injury but is still our best attacker.

erm, that is what I said. Ronaldo is still our best attacking player, but SAF might be trying to move the team away from Ronaldo gradually so that we won't struggle when he leaves next season.

It was.

"Dippers might be onto something and it makes sense"....surely you were being sarcastic.

I don't do sarcasm.

Ronaldo is obviously leaving sooner or later, and it makes sense to gradually make him less of a main focus in our attacking game.

Should have had a hatrick yesterday. Got through 1 and 1 with the keeper 3 times was it? You are normally big on the facts.

Then he should have been subbed off to give Nani (Ronaldo's potential replacement) at least 30 min on the pitch to play with the other mainstays ? Or start with a fit Tevez in any of the 3 previous games ahead of Ronaldo ?

I doubt SAF is planning for Ronaldo leaving because he will never even think of selling a player who will be useful to the club. If he was planning for a team without Ronaldo, he would have sold him already as we wont possibly get a better offer and Fergie is capable of showing any player the door, yet still be confident of winning without him. There is only 1 club that can afford Ronaldo and Fergie probably believes that they can keep him away from their clutches, more so when Scolari isnt whispering about Madrid in his ear every time he trains for internationals. With CQ managing Portugal, SAF has less worries as Querioz had a bitter experience at Madrid and would advise Ronnie against moving there.

who said he's leaving at the end of the season? :) it's not a given

Besides even with Berbatov now in the fold, I don't think it's changed much. Yes Ronaldo's keeping the width sure but he's still cutting inside averaging probably 2 shots a game at the moment and he should be on four goals for the season (already).

He'll be fine come December and then onwards. Remember, he missed pre season so is still searching for form and fitness, as well as adjusting like everyone else to a differnt style of front play with the addition of Berbatov.

That is possibly the thinng I admire most of SAF. Despite being the best team in Europe last year and having created the most exhilirating genre of football, he will not stand still and he continues to evolve his style and formation so no opposition team can predict how we will play.

But I have no doubt he will make a significant contribution again this season with at least 20+ goals.

But we will be less reliant on him this year, both for goals as well as inspiration - and that good for everyone.

I think this season might be like the 06-07 season for him in that he will get around 20-25 goal region but more assists than last season.
He is on the road to fitness and once fit, he is going to be devestatingly effective again. He isn't even fit and has only made six appearances in three and a half months, yet has still managed three assists and two goals.

I think you're reading too much into it. Like Chris said, its probably got alot more to do with his lack of full fitness and the arrival of Berbatov. Also, even if he had said he was going to stay with us for the rest of his career, its still less than ideal to rely so heavily on one player in our attack.

Ronaldo spending so much time in the centre last season was imo partly due to him being goal hungry (rightly so given his form) and partly because Rooney and Tevez often simultaneously spent large chunks of games far way from the penalty area. When he didn't attack the penalty area we very often had absolutely noone there. Berbatov playing gives us one extra player who spends much of the game in that area, but it also looks to have encouraged Rooney to play near the penalty area more as he's got someone he can consistently work off now. Given how effective Ronaldo is at zeroing in on free space, it makes sense that he'd go back to exploiting the wings more now than he did last year.

Yesterday we played 4-2-3-1. The formation was fluid yesterday.

Rooney drifted off the wing plenty, Giggs drifted all over the place, as did Berbatov, and Ronaldo just did as he always does, looked to get in behind at wherever the opportunity was.

Just because Quieroz is gone doesn't mean we'll go back to 'boring old 4-4-2', that's not what our players are suited too.

The formation we're playing now is similar to the one with Saha, except less structured. By that I mean the lead the line striker will be any one of four, rather than having one person lead the line with the other three rotating behind them.

The main reason Ronaldo has more assists this season is because he has players who can finish now. Giggs has been threatening this season, Berbatov and Rooney are forging a good partnership and are both hitting a nice patch of form and so Ronaldo has more targets to aim at.

His role hasn't changed at all.
