Rafael

A lot of people were calling for O'Shea to start because they didn't think Rafael could handle Robinho. Rafael showed that he is a better player than John O'Shea and probably deserves to be first choice at this time.

Rafael didn't have to handle Robinho because Park did almost all of the defending.

He was brilliant. Thrown in at the deep end against Robinho, held his own brilliantly. I'm sorry to all the O'Shea fans, but Rafael is just 10 times the player O'Shea is.

No that is completely wrong. Park did not do almost all the defending. They did it between them. He was a much better option than O'Shea in the end.

I knew there'd be some knobend who would come on to put him down after keeping a £30mil plus man quiet in his first derby.

Can't say I'm surprised at who it is..

He showed again a big game mentality. I think he did very well. The fact is people said with him, he would be a defensive liability but the shape of the team was good and we kept a clean sheet and that is the only thing that matters

The fact he was quieter in the second half, is in a way good. Though he still did one or two nice things he was on a booking from the first half so I think we probably told him not to put himself in a position where he's exposed and could risk a sending off

Even if we didn't, he was sensible in the second half

its not about him being the best player on the pitch .. i was worried he wasnt ready for the big games yet .. he certainly didnt look out of place today ..

and there is so much to come from him ..

the booking was stupid .. he was just returning the ball to the place where the foul was committed

that's nonsense.

almost every time Robinho received the ball with his back to the goal, Rafael was on him like a flash, stopping him turning. i know because i was watching for this since that's the most effective way of stopping him.

the boy did well defensively, no doubt about that.

Brwned is usually a level headed poster but on the topic of Rafael (and if he's better than o'shea), he seems to get really critical of the kid.

I for one are damned excited about Rafael, the kid is special. Evra gets better and better, and Rio and Vidic are like the rock of Gibraltar.

United's defense is on the up, and that is exciting considering they are already the best around.

I thought he had a fantastic game today and he handled Robinho very well. I thought he was very unlucky to receive the yellow card when he didn't really do anything wrong. I love watching him play, he's just amazing. He has definitely shown that he can rise to the challenge and that he has the mentality for big games like that.

This is right. Park and Rafael worked hard together to close down our right side.

I would not feel quite so secure about Rafael if he had someone like Nani in front of him who would not track back.

He was brilliant, Robinho hardly had a sniff.

I don't know what it is but I was criticising him all game, I always am.

He was constantly further ahead of Park, trying to close down the ball in the midfield a number of times while Park was at right back defending and it really annoyed me.

I think he's a great player though, and he and Park have the makings of a brilliant partnership.

Evra and Ronaldo on one side and Rafael and Park on the other.

I never once said he played badly today, just pointing out the flaws in his game which just seem blindingly obvious to me.

Fergie has obviously got trust in this lad, attackingwise as well as defensively, otherwise he wouldn't have let him stay on (with a yellow as well) until the end in such a game with 10 men.

Evra is generally defensively sound for his type of player (a bit like rafael, an LB that focuses alot on supporting attacks), but he got skinned a number of times today and needed a couple of fouls and a yellow to stop phillips.
I remember quite a few swift wingers (Lennon in that fa cup game as well, skinned him a couple of times and outplayed him to set up a goal) troubling Evra.

Despite that, people will still have Evra down as one of the best performers today and deservedly so: his type of players will have a few dodgy moments every now and then, but he'll still contribute far more in general to accept his failings sometimes. The same standards should be applied for Rafael, but somehow I feel people are harsher on him defensively when he hasn't been that bad.

What did i tell ya !

This kid should be starting more often. Enough of this "he's shit at defending, he's good going forward " lark. He's great in both sectors.

Brwnd:

Rafael's fourth choice behind Wes, Neville and O'Shea, eh?

says a lot about SAF's faith in his quality that he started him today, and didn't bring him off when we were a man down for O'Shea, now doesn't it?

Says a lot about his faith, doesn't say anything about the pecking order though.

of course he has flaws! - he's EIGHTEEN!!

but they are not as bad defensively as you regularly make out.

The flaws that he has, the biggest one being his positioning, puts the rest of the team under a lot of added pressure.

Whether his flaws outweigh his benefits is a different matter, something I'm beginning to change my mind about.

His mentality is his biggest asset though. fecking immense.

Why do English refs have it in for our Rafael? He always has bizarre calls go against him. The yellow card today was absolute madness.

But the guy's only an year old than us, he'll improve but the only way that will happen is if we play him and show trust in him. Not by leaving him behind JOS in the pecking order. He's improving all the time and in 3 seasons he really could be world class that is IF he's plays quite a few games each season.

sophistry won't get you anywhere with me.

the facts speak for themselves - the empirical evidence, if you will.

The facts, you mean the facts that state O'Shea has played our last 3 games ahead of Rafael?(IIRC)

Well that's for sure. If Rafael plays, I think it has to be Park that plays on that side with him, or Fletcher (if Scholes was back). But no way should Nani play together with Rafael.

Gullitt made a decent point at half-time: teh fact that we have both our fullbacks bombing forward puts pressure on the other side - their wingers have to track back. it helped that we had complete control of the central midfield, but there is a strategy to having an adventurous fullback.

I have no doubt that he'll be world class by that time, sooner than that I think, but JOS is needed for some games ahead of Rafael (IMO, which I see is completely unique and most likely wrong by the looks of things:().

He'll learn this incredibly quickly.

Proved himself today, had great discipline to stay back after Ronaldo was sent off.

(And Evra was often further forward than Ronaldo.)

No he isn't. He's great going forward but he's only decent at the back. However, he's pretty fecking good FOR AN 18 YEAR OLD...... I'd be amazed if he isn't Evra quality by 22-23 to be honest, barring serious injury etc. (touch wood)

He was brilliant, Robinho hardly had a sniff.

Missing persons ad:

Police are currently searching for a missing person. He is 24 years old, about 5ft 8 and answers to the name Robinho AKA 'best player in the world, I'm better than Ronaldo'. He was wearing a sky blue shirt and white shorts. He went missing about 1.30pm and hasn't been seen since. Police have called in a young 18 year old Brazilian by the name of Rafael to check his back pocket in search of Mr.Robinho.

he was very good today, kept Robinho quiet, solid defending and, when possible, got forward. His technique, pace and passing is already above most RB. The boy's gonna be class

I agree.

Until he does, there's still reason to have O'Shea ahead of him for some games though.

the only games i would put oshea ahead of him would be for games that carry an additional physical threat like portsmouth, bolton and the like.

I also would be apprehensive about lining him up with nani.
