Rafael

He's got some pace on him. He had a few challenges where he gambled and sprinted full speed to get the ball and I thought, oh shit he's not going to get to it and be way out of position. Every time though he got to it, and did something productive with it.

Should start ahead of O'Shea every time, this fallacy of him not being able to tackle is bollocks, him and Park could forge a great partnership on the right with their energy, maybe we'll see the likes of Pogue and the other O'shea supporters warming to this fact, i thought we played our strongest side today bar Scholes; who with the recent surge in form from Fletcher is up for argument.

I've tried not to get involved in the Caf's obvious love fest for Rafael till today. He's showing us the potential that brought him to our scouts attention way back whenever that was.

He's played some easy games to date, and some cameo's in others (Arsenal). The one game of note that I felt he'd played of note was the Celtic away game, where he had a bit of a nightmare. However today was just what the doctored ordered. After the love in given to him for the goal at Arsenal, which really didn't mean too much in the end, today was the chance to put Celtic behind him and show the world what he's all about.

He simply played Robinho was no where to be seen, and this in part was due to Rafael. He's got lots to learn, but so did Gary Neville at his age, and if we get anywhere near the service out of Rafael as we have out of Neville I'll be more than happy. He'll soon be pushing his way into the Brazilian U21 team, if not the European Brazilian squad which will only help us. I hope that he's also passing on the bits and pieces to Fabio about the atmosphere out on the pitch, but also in the dressing room. It's only going to be a matter of time before Fergie unleashes them both on some poor unsuspecting team, say like Southampton.

Being able to defend and being able to tackle are two completely different things.

Rafael's biggest weakness is O'Shea's biggest strength - positioning.

You need to have someone who is positionally solid in some specific games.

Spot on, good sir.

I think that was probably his 10th game today. When you consider everything...he can only get better. To put it into perspective, if we win the league ....he'll get a medal

defensively we were solid and it really doesn't matter who covers who. When evra bombs forward, someones covering for him. Going forward, Rafael IS out best full back on form, potential

There is no rush to play him every week but clearly he's a player

Can't think of any situation in which he was caught out of position today tbh.
Robinho was quiet the whole game, I think that is some achievement.

And tbh there were more than enough situations in which Oshea or Evra were out of position as well, so....

He and Park looked like they had a good understanding between them on the right, attacking and defending. City never looked threatening on that side.

I knew there'd be some knobend who would come on to put him down after keeping a £30mil plus man quiet in his first derby.

Can't say I'm surprised at who it is..

Explain that one to me.

I never once said he played badly today, just pointing out the flaws in his game which just seem blindingly obvious to me.
Strange.

Normally I'm like that too. I'm super-excited about him and love his enthusiasm and talent, but his positioning and over-the-top sliding tackles have me quite worried. But in this game I thought he had the balance very good. Still wandered out of position a few times, but nowhere near as much as he has in the other games. I felt for the first time he played a rather disciplined role (for him ), generally staying back and focusing on his defending and only bombing forward when the opportunity was actually there.

Maybe you got Park and Rafael mixed up at times? I know I did a few times, only to realise a second later that Rafael couldn't have been the one further up the pitch as he was definitely the one in the defensive line. Add Fabio and Tevez to the team and I'll never know who is who. :nervous:

At least I've got someone who agrees with me to an extent, maybe I was a bit harsh. I'll watch MOTD tonight and see if there's any times when he was out os position when City were threatening.

Yeah I got Park and Rafael mixed up quite a bit actually.

 been drinking by any chance Lizard?

He's amazing going forward, I do think his positioning is weak but it's due to his enthusiasm to close down the opposition winger, a bit of experience will sort that out no problem

Even Andy Gray in his post-match (Man City) interview said something like: "Rafael has enormous, enormous potential."

Mate, I('ve been drinking for abou 10 hours because of the gootball, i've also had a coupkle of spliffs and can't see a thing.

:D

 legend, been drinking since 1 myself, didn't get home 'til 7 this morning either.

Brwned I can certainly see where you are coming from, he has a bit to do before he is an automatic starter for me. Saying that he was brilliant today in what is his biggest match to date.

Ahhh feck not getting carried away the kid is a little god who can do no wrong in my eyes.

Can't wait to see Fabio in action :muppet:

I hope Rafael stays there for the rest of the season, we've got the next big thing in his position.

Thought he was fantastic today and his defending as come on leaps and bounds in the few months he's had with the first team.

Like I said a the time we should have played Park and Rafael against Villa, it was really a bad choice from Fergie to put O'shea there.

Horses for courses. Villa's record from set-pieces is better than any other team in the league. We needed O'Shea's strength in the air.

As it happened Villa were shitter than expected but SAF doesn't pick teams with the benefit of hind-sight, like you just did.

He's the future. JOS on @ good d@y is tidy. This l@d, however, is something else, though.

Fair enough, but we would have had more goal scoring chances in the game if Rafael was there, because attacking wise we were clueless creating barely a couple of chances. Especially on the right.
