Manchester United v Sunderland

This game is a lot like Newcastle at home last season and we all know what happened then

I'm almost tempted to suggest Giggs on for Fletcher. Fletcher's qualities aren't really needed the way this game is being played, but Giggs is good at crossing and finding clever passes, and we'll need that if it's going to continue like this.

Think back to our match against against Newcastle in January last season.

Scored 6 goals in the second half.

And they didn't have a manager at that time either.

Newcastle was like Reading last season and we had a number of injury problems that day.

The teams in bold were all away from home and are arguably our toughest fixtures along with Arsenal.

True, but we still managed to have long spells of possesion and good chances. But just not take them. We've played well enough outside the area, just not done enough inside it.

Anyway, just remember what happened when the last Manager-less team came to Old Trafford and were holding us to a 0-0 at half-time. Yep, the end result was 6-0. ;)

Berbatov has done well aside from finishing. Could have had 3, has 0. Rooney miscontrolled on his best chance. Rafael probably had the best chance of the half, which really says something.

Would say this is the kind of game where Giggs through the middle is a good option. Not much defending to do, and he can drift all over the place.

Anybody calling for Berbatov or Rooney to go off at HT is a spastic, you can't look good against a back 10. It's simple, the easiest way we will break the deadlock is to utilise our wingers better and someone to get a decent cross in. Sunderland haven't come to play football, they have come to not let us play football.

fecking hell...
Sunderland aren't even making an effort to get out of their own box. Its going to be tough to break them down.

We do need to pick up the pace and spread out the play more. A bit too narrow at times.

Ronaldo has had an absolute 'mare.

DEFEND FOR YOUR LIIIIVES!

Agreed. As much as I rate Fletcher his role in today's game has been lacking as Sunderland are rarely past their own third.

Indeed. Far to many knee jerk comments in here.

I'd be surprised if we make any changes at HT simply because we don't need to. If we still haven't broken through on around 60mins then look at changing things.

So far another example of how compared to last season we can't overpower teams, we faff about a fair bit too.

When could Berbatov have had 3 goals? :wenger::wenger:

Would help if someone on our team could do something with the ball without needing about 30 seconds to think about it first. Standing still with the ball for ages, and then passing it pointlessly to the person next to you, isn't going to beat any team in the entire football league system, with the possible exception of Newcastle.

We'd have almost been better off going with the Carling Cup lads again. In fact, I'd be tempted to be putting one or two of them in there as it is. Too many times we've looked unarsed this season. Lots of players who need a kick up the backside

Agreed with both comments.

I wonder what Sunderland will do if we actually score a goal and they need to come forward.

Will be a shock to the system, this is one of the most negative performances I have seen in a while.

Don't bother seriously, there is no point.

Last season this game would have been over inside 20 minutes, and then the arsing around would start, and it wouldn't matter

Relax its total domination one goal will lead to many! Not much space to run in or play in. But once we get the first then they can sit in and lose or try come out and leave spaces to cut them open!

There's many games last season that many would have said the same about the season before.

Half time ratings?

VDS - N/A

Rafael - 7
Rio - 7
Vidic - 7
Evra - 7

Ronaldo - 6
Carrick - 8
Fletcher - 6
Park - 7

Rooney - 6
Berbatov - 7

The key word is urgency. We need a goal, we want the 3 points so there is no reason to play like we have all the time in the world. Hit them hard and fast so we get a breakthrough.

If we get a goal early second half they will be forced to attack, leaving more space, plus them getting tired, could lead to more goals.

We must break them though.

It seems like teams are coming to OT more confident in parking the bus and squeezing a result. They just pack the middle so congested that we can't get through, and any cross we deliver into the box there's no one who can power a header to threaten the goal.

Not really. Well, there was the Sunderland game last season, which we played like complete shite in, and didn't deserve to win. We played some retarded line up in that one though, if I remember rightly. Think Anderson was up front with Tevez, and Eagles on one of the wings. Slight difference

Like Newcastle at home you mean?

No, we spanked them in the first half and somehow didn't score

Bardsley needs to be booked

Only had a pretty rubbish stream but Carrick has looked superb

Hoof and hope continues from Sunderland, I dont think Van Der Sar has done a thing all game other than set up the wall.

Shot straight at the keeper on the floor, the Rooney effort that was going wide that he turned towards goal and then the corner where he missed the ball.

And that's down to poor finishing?!
