Manchester United vs FC Porto

Macheda should start. Tevez will be exhausted, so too Giggs. Scholes is a liability at the moment. Did his best to give away soft goals to Inter with ridiculously careless crossfield passes that got intercepted then went and handled the ball at Fulham, having already made one reckless challenge in the opening minutes.

Macheda will be full of confidence and will get the crowd going. Give him 60 mins then put on one of Tevez/Nani/Giggs.

Jesus. Didn't realise this was tomorrow (today actually!).

I'd love it if we could go into the 2nd leg relaxed, love it.

Whilst Tevez will be no 100%, I would still start with him and Rooney and then introduce Macheda later on, fresh legs and all that. Tevez isn't an old fogey, he has barrels of energy. He once played the Brazilian season, the World Cup then the Premier League seaosn for West Ham, then the Coipa America for Argentina then the season for us without a break, he can cope.

No chance Marcheda will play against Porto.

We effectively have Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo, Nani, and Park competing for 3 places.

Funny how people who didn't know a thing about him before Sunday now think he should start a Champions League quarter final.

I think base don Nani's current form (whole season almost), I would have Macheda in the side and bench over him hands down.
His confidence would be brimming mate, it's not a daft idea to play him at some point..........

I've seen some people saying he'll start. Not gonna happen.

He may be on the bench. Seriously doubt he'll get to come on.

I think we'll have 3 central midfielders with 3 attacking players, and Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney, and Park are obviously ahead of Marcheda for those 3 spots, and you can probably add Nani and Welbeck to that.

People getting carried away!

The way it will work is I think they'll have us down as an orthodox 4-4-2 with our backline, then Ronaldo, Fletcher, Carrick and Park as our middle-men, excpet Ronaldo is far from orthodox and will more like asist Rooney and Tevez upfront (which I'm excited about) but Macheda will play some part as a sub, I think it's a serious liklihood Gazza, I really do; he's already shown he has the talent, the strength and the form to play a part in this game.

It depends on the score if United are up 2-0 or 3-0, I reckon teh subs will be of a defensive nature, he might get in if it 0-0 something like that

What has Scholes got to do withwho starts upfront?

a goal in the first half for us please otherwise the nerves start to kick in.

we have to keep a clean sheet also and win.

My job doesn't quite work that way.

feck sake...cant you take 45 mins off for the second half.

tell the boss you have diarrhea and you should be back within the hour since your committed to your job. :wenger:

I am really looking forward to this match. I think coming out of the Villa match with 3 points which we barely deserved could be the turning point in our form which has been woeful recently. I am thinking that this could be a mauling.

My gut feeling is that we won't prove able to shut them out tonight, they'll bag themselves one away goal [perhaps to take the lead].

We'll win 2 or maybe even 3-1.

If we score 5 would we need to keep a clean sheet?

feck being cautious, we have to attack them...Porto will be nervous if we get at them, we're the European Champions.

Can't fecking wait

My first Champions League game.

Ronaldo will score 2 goals, as he has done the last 4 times I've been to see us :smirk: I expect a blinder from Rooney after sitting out Sun.

Is this on ITV1?
Macheda isn't ready for the CL yet.

people say that but you know i don't think any of us would have thought at 2-1 down to villa, that would be ideal.

At home, still buzzing after the goal on sunday he'll probably be on the bench and I'd have thought be ahead of welbeck - just because the kids on such a high

People used the logic about welbeck not even being on the bench last season for sunday (when sir alex said he would last season) and look how it turned out? They were wrong, Sir Alex was being honest this time and the kid did fine

I think though he might come on as sub as he did fine on sunday.

I'm sure it'll be 4-4-2 with tevez and rooney up top.

I think machedas a real wild card for us.

Sir Alex as stated he's likely to be on the bench. And yes, it is on ITV - yay to shitty broadcasting quality.

Macheda's facebook says he is

Regardless I don't believe my eyes, peopel actually predictiong this lad to start with 2 fit world-class strikers and an already-earned-my-place Danny Welbeck available?

It will be interesting duel that tonight with:

hell for leather and score early and then score again shortly after and United will be fine. the second iscrucial tho as Porto will settle and with the speed (hulk) and the skill (rodriguez) they'll create chances ... whether lisandro will manage to take one I guess we'll have to wait.

pretty certain Porto will get one, mind.

I thought you were gonna say 'Macheda isn't ready for ITV.."

How many of us thought he wasn't ready for the Villa game, but he played really well apart from his amazing goal. If we're a couple of goals up, easy-easy, why not give Tev a rest, he can't be playing consecutive 90mins just now, especially with Berba still out.

Even if welbeck started, he's still only 18 and a kid himself. Rooney will obviously start but Tevez might struggle for the 90 minutes

I think kiko would get the nod but Sir Alex might just leave him on the bench. We'll find out later

Macheda will be on the bench I imagine till about the 70th minute, plenty of time to let the atmosphere sink in and help the nerves subside.

---------Vds----------
O'shea-Vidic-Evans-Evra
------Carrick-Fletch-----
Ronaldo-Scholes---Park
--------Rooney---------

What has Scholes got to do with who starts upfront?

Count the number of fit players we have. Assuming Fletcher and Park both start then you are basically left with a choice between:

1) Nani
2) Giggs
3) Scholes
4) Tevez
5) Macheda

If you want to leave out Fletcher or Park then you need 2 from the 5 players listed. You can make a reasonable case for all 5. I don't think it is at all clear cut which of them should play. Had Giggs been rested for this match then I suspect he would have been chosen. Had Tevez not been in La Paz then he might be a sensible selection. Had Nani shown more on Sunday then may be he would have been a reasonable choice. Had Scholes not totally lost the plot in his last two appearances then .................

Rooney?
Carrick?
Welbeck?
Gibbo?
Ronald?

I'm assuming Ronaldo, Carrick and Rooney will all start. And that Gibson and Welbeck would be on the bench at best.

The point is that the match is today. In the last week Macheda has scored a hatrick and the winning goal in the last few mins against Villa, and impressed even before that. Had circumstances been different then he wouldn't even be under consideration for a place on the bench but this is the current environment. Lots of players appear to be short of confidence. Several are injured. Others are exhausted.

It was a risk to put Macheda on against Villa with 30 mins to go. It is far less of a risk to use him to get the crowd buzzing etc today. We are not a team playing well.

Put it this way, if Macheda starts would you expect the atmosphere to be more electric than say if Scholes is used in a 3 man midfield, or if Tevez is selected?

Do you want us to have a go at Porto or sit and hope to keep a clean sheet, and perhaps nick a goal at some point?

Macheda will only ever make it if he is sound technically. If he has a touch like Ameobi, absolute 0 chance regardless of his finishing. If he can control it well and his touch and passing is good, we have a potential star.

Fergie won't play Kiko for a bit now I reckon, stop him getting ahead of himself.
