Rio Ferdinand is on course to be fit for Manchester United's must-win Champions League tie with Porto.
Ferdinand, who has missed United's last three games with a groin problem, is ready to reclaim his starting place for Wednesday's decisive return leg.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is desperate for Ferdinand to return to shore up United's defence, which has shipped five goals in the England defender's absence.
Ferdinand could have played in United's 2-1 win at Sunderland on Saturday, but it was decided not to take the risk to ensure he is fit for Wednesday.
Ferdinand has been included in United's travelling party that leaves for Porto tomorrow and is ready to resume his successful central defensive partnership with Nemanja Vidic.
A source close to Ferdinand rated the 30-year-old's chances as "80-20" to start on Wednesday and said the defender was willing to undergo pain-killing injections to play.

Reckon he will be the difference in the defense

It'll be a really strong united side... and a good win...

Sometimes it seems saf picks names out of a hat randomly:

Thats my bet too, I felt that Rooney was being tried on the Left on Saturday to get feel for it due to the Porto game and i reckon we will see Berba too - but i saw his ankle straped with a ice pack after he came on so he may be injuried...

Good enough team to beat Porto but all will have to be on form and i just pray Fletcher isnt pushed out wide because we really need his energy in the middle, thats why i thought perhaps Anderson would play for Giggs so he could move out to the left when we attack or change to a 442.

Well to be honest i know i have them lined up like that but that's just a formation, it's them 11 players i'm wanting on the pitch. Far too much focus is given to formations these days.

It could easily be:

Neville Rio Vidic Evra
Ronaldo Fletcher Carrick Giggs
Berbatov Rooney

our midfield will get ripped.

i wouldn't mind if saf plays a 4-5-1 :nervous:

Like i pointed out in the post above, don't focus on the formation focus on the 11 players.

Besides, i don't think a combo of Flec, Carrick and Giggs in a tight midfield 3 would get ripped at all.

I would rather play Oshea, instead of neville.

Personally for me formation is perhaps as important as the people you have out during a game, i thought in the first leg SAF showed them to much respect to line up against them like for like - as soon as we switched to 442 we looked like we had much more of a threat about us, in fact had we had the right personal out there and didnt put Fletcher out on the wing but had a natural winger on for Scholes so Fletcher would be in the middle i reckon we would have had that game

i think we need to keep it tight and nick a couple of goals

VDS

O Shea, Vidic, Ferdinand (please), Evra

Ronaldo, Carrick, Fletcher, Giggs

Rooney, Berbatov

think fletcher will need to be very disciplined and help out with the defence

scholes had a very good game on saturday so he could be in with a shout...

From what i saw on Saturday, I think Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez and Berbatov will start. Ferguson will want to have his best players on the pitch from the start as we need to win. Hopefully we'll be leading in the second half and Fergie will bring on defensive options not to concede (i.e Park for Rooney or Fletcher/anderson for Ronaldo).

Giggs is going to start
Rested against sunderland and all

So Giggs for Park
And i think Fletch is going to start in place of Scholes

Subs: Foster, O'Shea, Fletcher, Scholes, Park, Tevez, Macheda

Is Evans injured? Not mentioned in a lot of these even as sub. I wouldn't be surprised to see him play right back y'know...

I think Giggs is going to have an amazing game.

I cant see Scholes playing considering he had a full 90 on Saturday - he may be on the bench but wouldnt start when you consider Fletcher and Giggs were rested yesterday. I even have my doubts about Carrick if im being honest, i have a feeling SAF may go for Fletcher and Giggs with Nani/Anderson and Ronaldo on the wings (i say Anderson/Nani because i can see SAF telling Anderson to tuck in when we defend and move to the left when we attack).

Giggs don't play on the flank no more.

He does. Started against Inter at home in the first half, Derby home in the CC semi final and West Ham away on the wing. I'd guess Rooney is more likely to start on the left with Giggs behind Berbatov on Wednesday but Giggs has started on the flanks a fair few times this year.

- Van Der Sar -

- O'Shea - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra -

- Carrick - Fletcher -

- Ronaldo - Giggs - Rooney -

- Berbatov -

Don't know why I bother as Fergie always throws a curve ball in. But the above is my guess at the team. Maybe Neville at right back, and if Rio doesn't make it Evans to play instead.

I like the look of that team.

Good stuff. Was expecting him to recover in-time for this match

Lets hope he dominates.. Vida, Evra and O'Shea too

I rate both these sides despite difference.

I expect it to be one of these 2

With Rio back, what about playing Evans at RB. I just saw him once there in the Carling Cup final and i thought he did well. The thing is that I just don't want to see Neville or O'Shea starting this match.

I'd prefer Berbatov on the bench, he just hasn't earnt his place in his recent performances.

Barbie had been crap + he is not fit. My team
