FC Porto vs Manchester United

Is Rooney one booking away from a suspension?

Yes I believe so. According to the BBC website he was booked in both legs against Inter so will be one away as the automatic suspension comes after 3 bookings. Tevez is also listed with 2 bookings against his name but one came in the Super Cup so that may not count in this instance. Various players have one booking.

They reset the yellows after the group stage don't they? Or is that just the World Cup?

(I only say group stage because it was in the same time frame)

Ferguson recalls Juventus tie of 1998/99 for inspiration

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has used the clash with Juventus in Turin in the 1998/99 Champions League as inspiration for Wednesday night’s Champions League fixture with Porto.

On that occasion, the Red Devils drew 1-1 with Juve at home but managed to come from 2-0 down in the return leg to eventually win 3-2 and go through to the final; which they also won.

Ferguson remembers the performance of Roy Keane that evening and hopes his team can go out there and emulate his feats.

“It was Roy’s greatest moment. He was unbelievable for us that night, though the team also played fantastically well,” Ferguson said.

“This is a similair situation to the Juventus tie and we have a lot of players who can step up to the plate.

“We’ve players who can win the game. Winners, match-winners on the big occasion — and that’s really important.

“These players have to remember where they have been in the past, the performances they have produced, and realise they have a great opportunity.

“Their record in this competition over the last two years has been outstanding. Now here against Porto we have to match our expectations and standards, the required standards of Manchester United.”

Porto played brilliantly at Old Trafford and we played like chumps. That ended 2-2, so a half-decent performance should see them off. After having it so easy in the first leg, I reckon this lot will start to panic in front of their own supporters if the real United show up. IF. We haven't seen them for a while.

Cant wait for the game to start and i am confident that we make it, just. A last minute goal wouldnt really surprise me. Hope the players take Fergies words serious and we will see a good performance again. We will rediscover our form for sure the only question is when.

I'm looking forward to the game immensely now, going to miss the first half but I'll be racing home for the second and hopefully the team will put in a performance which they're capable of.

Come on lads!

I've got a feeling Rafael will play. I'm also thinking Anderson will be a starter and have a massive game.

I like the fact that we have to win to go through. That demands all of our attacking instincts to come alive. Pretty straightforward task .... and normally when we have to win, we do.

With Rio back, maybe this will be the game that our defence rediscovers its composure and with any luck Ronaldo and Berbatov will both prove their talent on the highest stage.

I'm thinking a comfortable 0-2 win which takes us through to meet Le Arse in the semi finals.

if rafael is fit he should start, espcially if Rio is back. Would like to see Anderson start as well.

----------------------VDS---------------------

Rafael-------Rio-------------Vida---------Evra

Ronaldo-----Carrick---------Giggs------Anderson

------------Berbatov-------Rooney--------------

that lineup will give us alot of movement and freedom that we lacked in the first leg. Giggs can come more central with Rooney drifting out left and Ando tucking in. Would have liked to play Fletch but is he in the squad?

I think this has all the makings of a high scoring, free flowing game.

We are good going forward, and shaky at the back, and Porto are the same.

Lets just hope for a bit of luck/magic. Their manager is in the stands for this one too, so lets see if that has an effect on the players during the game.

Come on you reds!!

I don't think I would start Rafael in one of our biggest games of the year.

Well, if I was Fergie I wouldn't anyway, it will most definately be a back five of:
VDS
O Shea, Rio, Vidic, Evra

I think you may see Giggs together with Scholes and Carrick in a three man midfield, along with Rooney coming from the left wing, Ronaldo from the right, and Berbatov up front. So something like this:
-----------Carrick-----------
----Scholes-------Giggs-----
Ronaldo---------------Rooney
-----------Berbatov---------

Yes.

Remember though...

- That will often look more life a 4-3-3. Unless Ronaldo has taken heed (from Fergie's advice) and tracks the full-back.

I'm not actually, I'm somehow mentally prepared to go out tonight :/ touch wood

I'm sure I'll be bricking it in seven hours time though...

We'll tear them apart and absolutely humiliate them. I doubt they'll even dare come out for the second half. Oh my god, the carnage...

I like that team - exactly what I'd like to see.

If we can go out there and play the way we know we can, then there'll be no problems but with the fact that we aren't exactly in the best of form at the moment makes me very nervous. Of course we can do it but it depends on which Manchester United show up - the team of 7 weeks ago or the team of the last several games. If it's the latter, then we're going home I think. A big performance is due from the lads, they simply have to do it. I just want this day over now and for the game to start :nervous:

If Berba plays, which I think he will I want to see you in here with your 'Berba to score' magic!

:D
