If we only sign Valencia...

Brwned, you yourself have said that Valencia isn't United quality, so other people suggesting the same shouldn't really surprise you.

You're obviously beginning to warm to the thought of him signing as it looks very likely - the same thing has happened to me. But that's mainly because there isn't really a whole lot other available wingers out there.
Someone mentioned this being a transition period, then I'd almost rather stick with Park and our youngsters Welbeck, Nani, Tosic and Ljajic when he comes, than go out and buy someone, who seemingly isn't that huge an improvement on them.

Valencia is only a year older than Nani, so could reasonably be described as young too. while I do think we might have to accept a transitional season I can't see the harm in beefing out our options on our flank with someone of proven PL quality.

Welbeck is probably good enough for a few cameos on the flank but is too young to hold down a place throughout the season. Tosic is completely unproven, Ljajic won't even arrive until next January and Nani might be needed to play opposite Valencia if Park has the same problems he's had with injuries in every other season bar the most recent one.

Even with Ronaldo in our squad we ended up playing Fletcher, Gibson and Welbeck out of position on the wing at various times last season. Now he's gone it's a no-brainer to add a quality winger to our squad IMO.

I think we were buying him anyway for depth, but the media have latched onto the 'he's replacing Ronaldo' angle

Why would be buy for depth when we need to improve out first team?

Well I am one of the few who actually don't mind the idea of Rooney on the wing, so seeing us buy a striker instead wouldn't make me cry.
Tosic and Welbeck are unproven and Ljajic won't arrive until January, yes, but I have always been a fan of giving the youngsters a chance unless we can find someone who'd be a huge improvement on our squad, and I'm not sure Valencia is that player. I have high hopes for Welbeck on the wing and wouldn't mind him being 3rd choice (4th if Rooney is going to play there as) - if we buy Valencia, then that makes the queue quite long for some of the players, including the very talented Ljajic, when he does arrive.

But like I said; I have begun warming up to the thought of him coming here, and would love to see him change our team for the better if he does indeed come. But I also wouldn't cry if Real ended up buying him and he'd be sat on the bench the next couple of years.

first off i'm totally proud of my team and our achievement of matching the dippers long standing total of 18 league titles

i'm not that bothered about ronaldo or tevez going as with both, for different reasons, the time did feel right for those players to move on

the problem is that with us level on 18 with liverpool, us narrowly winning the league and them strengthening this summer the pressure is on for us to stay ahead - liverpool were also looking really hungry last year - you only needed to see our games against them to see that

at the same time i would hate for us to go out and do something daft like 65 million or whatever on ribery - i think i prefer the way we've done business in the past and we need to be patient

i think valencia will be a good signing and he mightnt grab the headlines like some players but he has been really effective when i've seen him - will he be enough to reclaim the league?? i dont think so...

i think we do need to bring someone in who can add a different dimension to our attack - we need someone quick and a bit more direct - think last season with the lack of goals with rooney/berbatov/tevez playing you have players who arent the most direct and the first two tend to play very deep

i think benzema is the right player for us but it could be the wrong time - all the sounds from lyon say he wants to stay for another year but if the money is right he could move - i dont want to see united paying something ridiculous to get him in

so i suppose its up to fergie - does he think we have enough in the current squad to win another title? will he break the bank to get the final piece of the jigsaw?

I would like to see Welbeck fast-tracked into becoming one of our main strikers (his preferred position) and I want to see Rooney in the centre next season (despite his effectiveness on the left). Signing a striker would also bumps both Welbeck and Macheda further down the pecking order and I rate them as more exciting prospects than Tosic, hence if the choice was striker or winger I would opt for a winger (in reality we might end up signing one of each).

Over the next couple of seasons our four first-team wingers would be Valencia, Park and (hopefully) Nani and (maybe) Tosic. Chances are one of either Nani or Tosic won't make it at United, which is where Ljajic comes in. If they both make the grade then he can gradually displace Park, who's had a load of serious injuries and isn't getting any younger. No doubt Ljajic is a super talent but he's still incredibly young and I doubt he's be playing any first-team football until the season after next, most likely the season after that.

I would be a bit worried if we only signed Valencia as I think we definitely need a striker. Campbell is looking likely for Hull plus god knows with Manucho. With Rooney & Berba being our only senior strikers, say one or both (god help us) gets injured, then we'll have to rely on two teenagers to get us through. Don't get me wrong, I think Kiko and Welbeck have all the potential in the world but I'd still like to see another striker come in and hopefully the young lads can be bedded in more next season in some games here or there.

Rooney MUST move back to his central role. He is one of the top players in the world in the striker department and we won't get anyone more suited for United than him.

Can I make this a Benzema VS Berbatov cuz I reckon that Benzema and Rooney if they'd partner up would be unstoppable. Both with great strength, pace, teamwork and more importantly they take their shots at the right time. Berba, yes is classic with his nice touch but sometimes I just think he doesn't take his chances enough.

btw. Valencia imo. won't be enought to challenge the CL again. We need either another striker or a promising Midfielder that will rise to take place of Giggs/Scholes.

We need a striker and a winger, to compensate for losing both Ronaldo & Tevez, I'd say we need those more than a midfielder at the moment in time. Plus why make it Benzema v Berbatov? No need to IMO. We don't know what will happen but if we were to get Benzema (and it's a big if IMO), then there'd still be room for Berba.

I said that I didn't want him, but to say that he wouldn't improve our team now or that he's just going to be a squad player is nonsensical.

I'm still not sure about Valencia overall in the long-term, but he's clearly going to be first choice.
