Manchester United vs. VfL Wolfsburg

Obertan - Nani

Giggs - Valencia - Park - Fletcher

Welbeck - Tosic - Fabio - Rafeal

Hargreaves

I just wanted to see if I could fill the team with wing players...

Fabio/Rafael/Fletcher/OH are all semi-wing players :)

But i'd like to see this team:

ROONEY - BERBALICIOUS :nono: Never use that name again...

NANI - ANDERSON - CARRICK - VALENCIA

GOD(evra) - VIDIC - RIO - MR. CAPTAINO

FOSTER

:)

Carrick doesn't come close to earning a starting role.

Same keeper and back four. Park and Giggs for the wingers and Anderson for Carrick. I'd rather see what Owen can do from a start over Berb but I think it'll be Rooney and Berb again.

Wolves are a tough lot and will prove tough to handle. Good match at OT. Keep an eye on their Brazilian striker...

I would love it, LOVE IT, if we played

Foster
O Shea Rio Vidic Evra
Nani Fletcher Anderson Giggs
Rooney Owen

It'll be a tough match though, so maybe SAF will start Berb instead of Owen or stick Giggs in the middle and play Valencia instead of Anderson, but I would like to see the 2 of them starting. Nani and Valencia (if he starts) both need a good game tonight to get over the weekend.

but if Fergie want to persist with 451 then

Park is OUT of this match, but Michael Owen should be fit after a groin problem:

Ji-sung Park is a doubt for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Wolfsburg, after being laid low by a virus.

Patrice Evra was also struck by the bug over the weekend, but has sufficiently recovered and should be in contention.

Park missed training on Tuesday, and will be hard pushed to even make the bench for the Bundesliga champions’ visit. Michael Owen also sat out the session with a minor groin complaint, but should be available.

“Ji-sung has a virus,” Sir Alex Ferguson told his pre-match press conference. “Patrice Evra had it at the weekend. After the Stoke game he felt a bit uneasy – he was in bed on Sunday and didn’t come to training, but he came in for a bit yesterday, came in today and he should be alright.

“Michael should be alright for tomorrow. He had a tight groin in training yesterday, nothing serious. But obviously for the game tomorrow we didn’t want to be pushing that. Other than that everyone’s fit.”

I think their friendship might be a little too close :nervous:

Oshea.....Vidic.....Rio...........Evra

--------------Foster-------------
O'Shea-----Rio-----Vidic-----Evra
Valencia--Fletch--Anderson--Giggs
---------Rooney--Berbatov-------

Subs: PIG, Brown, Evans, Carrick, Scholes, Nani, Owen.

Team should be...

GK: Foster

RB: O'Shea
CB: Ferdinand
CB: Vidic
LB: Evra

RM: Valencia
CM: Fletcher
CM: Carrick
LM: Nani

CF: Rooney
CF: Berbatov

Subs: PIG, Neville, Evans, Anderson, Scholes, Giggs, Owen

Hard to say what the score will be as it's hard to know how big a test they'll be, I fancy Berbatov to score though

Berbatov needs to start and begin to prove himself. We keep waiting for him to follow through on his promise to bring more determination in his performance, this season.

I like charlenefan's line-up, only trade out Carrick for Anderson.

Hopefully we beat the shit out them, that'd be awesomo! Rooney to score

I've already seen more determination in his performance this season. On quite a few occasions he has busted a gut to get into the box only not to be picked out (usually by Nani's final ball)

He hasn't really had his chance yet in Europe, as Fergie has opted for his 451 formation. But hopefully tonight he will get his chance

Wolfsburg has conceded 14 goals in 7 matches in bundesliga (only M'gladbach & Herta B. have conceded more).

It shouldnt be too hard for United to score a few goals

Dont know what to expect really, they have good players in Grafite and Dzeko i guess.
Think we will see a cautious game with both teams happy enough with 0-0 at the break,
then we will nick it in the second half hopefully.
Scholes rested, Anderson - Fletcher midfield, Park is out so probably Valencia and Nani from the start, maybe Giggs for Nani.
Maybe Evans or Wes in for Rio?

What happened to the match threads??
These days 2-3 pages seems the norm...

Don't want to tempt fate but I would disagree with group stages being boring. It's all very tactical. Someone made a good point about us 'hopfully' being in a strong positon to send a 'weaker' team to moscow so that we save a few for the liverpool game..

The main thing is to get the three points.

I never find it boring to watch United, but the real cup excitement is not
to be found in the group stages.

The " lesser" teams very rarely gets through a group stage anyway, the whole thing
is constructed by Uefa to maximize the number of games and hence the tv-deals.

Looking forward to this game although I will miss the first half. I'd personally go with;

Foster

O'Shea Ferdinand Vidic Evra

Valencia Fletcher Anderson Nani

Berbatov Rooney

I'd be tempted with Giggs but I think he might be better used against Sunderland at the weekend as he imagination will likely be needed due to an defensive approach from Sunderland.

I'd have liked to have seen Owen too but with the niggle I don't think it worth the risk.

Also eager to see the front two for them, I know they were deadly last season and made quite a impression on many people. Lets see what they're made of.

Random prediction:

Man Utd 3-1 Wolfsburg

Rooney ----- Dzeko
Berbatov
Ferdinand

I was going to say 3-1 as well, but Wolfsburg are good coming forward, with Dzeko and Martins, and Grafite is another skillful option up front, and a good finisher as well. The confident half of me says 3-1, but I can quite easily see us drawing this one, or winning it 2-1 or 3-2. Should be an attacking, open game of football though, if us and them play true to form.

4 - 0

or maybe they could nick a goal.

Even at home, if we beat the champions of Germany 4-0, or even 4-1 I would be absolutely delighted, especially as I'd say they're our main rivals for both qualification and for topping the group. If we can replicate the attacking form of Spurs (A) and City (H), and produce some solid defensive displays, it's definitely possible, but that would be a superb result.

Let's hope you're right, Pav! :)

Berba's been getting himself in fantastic goal scoring positions over the past few weeks. just got a feeling he'll get at least a brace tonight.

4-4-2. width will be the key tonight, with paddy evra supporting Nani at every available opportunity
