CSKA Moscow vs. Manchester United

We'll surely play O'Shea, Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra. Good opportunity to give both Neville and Brown some match training, I thought.

I agree. Based on tonight I think that will be the defence against Liverpool.

However, I would always prefer Nev than O'Shea at full-back.

Agreed, I always like Wes in the team. But fair play to Gaz Nev, he's in the team on merit. Has been fantastic of late

Really? I've thought he's looked very suspect defensively recently. He's still good going forward, and his organisational skills are great - but he's looked suspect when really pushed by a winger

You think so? I've always thought of him as an Anderson-type midfielder when playing there - covering plenty of ground, being combative and getting through as much defensive work as he does going forward.

Yeh i've seen him play off the front man for Ecuador twice. It's all irrelevant anyway though, i'm just being hopeful. Reality is that it's Fergie away from home in Europe so it will be O'Shea in midfield and one striker.

Or could he do a Rafa and play 3 CB's

------------- Berbatov--------------
---Nani --------------------- Valencia
--------- Anderson - Scholes
---Fabio-------------------------Neville
------- Rio ----O 'Shea--- Vidic ----
-------------- VDS------------------

.......... no he's not a idiot :devil:

I see a couple of reasons it won't work. One of them - no way Neville could do a Wingback.

According to the BBC, we have not beaten a Russian team in six attempts.

Apparently if we avoid defeat we will equal Ajax's records of 14 unbeaten away games in the CL.

Why do i get the feeling, that Nani is going be played more through the middle in this line-up? With Fabio being the wide player down the left?

Maybe that thread created a while ago is running through my mind.

Wishful thinking. It won't happen.

I can't understand why you're trying to put a negative spin on it.

We've now got two very attacking good attacking wings, with Fabio and Nani and Valencia and Neville looking to have everything you'd want going forward and they have every chance of forming strong partnerships on both wings, Neville and Valencia have already showed glimpses of it.

Plus having O'Shea in there gives Scholes and especially Anderson a licence to get forward more often, and Anderson regularly takes advantage of that freedom in a three man midfield.

Chances are it'll resemble something a bit more like this:

Neville Rio Vidic Fabio
O'Shea Scholes
Valencia Anderson Nani
Berbatov

The only real difference is we have a stronger spine defensively and a much stronger left wing going forward, and hopefully it'll get the best out of Anderson rather than having him stuck alongside Scholes which has often worked out very badly.

Scholes likes to play alongside a midfielder he can trust to be on for the easy pass. O'Shea does that a lot better than Anderson, and it makes me feel that bit safer with him in there.

I just don't like the fact everyone sees O'Shea as a weak link in our team time and again and only sees the negatives with him in it.

Looking forward to seeing how this team works. What's the bench like btw? and don't say comfortable.

Yeh Brwned, well said as always. Agree totally.

I really want to see Anderson flourish. He is/was the next Ronaldinho you know...

Substitutes

* 29 Tomasz Kuszczak
* 6 Wes Brown
* 7 Michael Owen
* 16 Michael Carrick
* 19 Daniel Welbeck
* 23 Jonny Evans
* 27 Federico Macheda

3 Strikers. Good bench.

Where is Gibson at the moment?.

I never saw his name in the squad as havgin travelled. Surely he would be due a game rather than O'Shea in midfield?. That said, I am not a great fan of Gibson.

Being hopeful?

You're to sensitive Brwned. By being hopeful what i meant was us lining up in something that resembled a 4-4-2 rather than 4-5-1/4-3-3 that we saw in our last European away game.

I just don't like the fact everyone sees O'Shea as a weak link in our team time and again and only sees the negatives with him in it.

I sincerely hope that wasn't aimed at me because I've long since championed O'Shea's contribution to our team. As it goes though, i'd have rather give someone like Gibson an opportunity in midfield rather than O'Shea.

Was i right? was i? was i?

Dunno yet, kick off isnt for another few minutes. I wouldnt go off what the UEFA line up says as they had Carrick on the right wing earlier on in the season.

Well, sorry.

Because, all you seem to do in this match day thread is leave one liners of negativity. Anyway - never-mind and enjoy the game.

you'd struggle to find a negative comment by me once the game starts.

But why?

We're often better with 4-3-3 rather than a 4-4-2 in Europe, it's more suited to the pace of the game and it's more adaptable which suits different conditions.

Phelan's got a bit of a beard going on.
