I doubt he is Elliot, sadly.

I just don't see that he has the class required to cut it at United. Would love to be proven wrong though.

Totally see where you're coming from, mate. But his progession since he arrived in Norway has been outstanding and if it continues at United anything can happen.

True that. What I'm most unsure about is his basic technique though. His physique is outstanding and I hear he is working on his finishing. But I wonder if he can improve his general technique of passing, trapping a ball, taking on a defender etc.

The staff obviously see potential in him though, so we're allowed to hope.

Surely that is too pessimistic. The norwegian league might not be too highly rated but they have produced good players that play in the premier league. When their teams play in the CL against English teams they don't get hammered by any means. Diouf has a scoring record of 1 in 2 games which is respectable and he has been playing on the wings for a lot of that time. He has certainly got all the basics, whether he can be good enough for United remains to be seen.

Like I said in another thread, his style is pretty Saha-esque.

Really? He seems like a good prospect, but beyond the fact that both has good aerial abilities and good physique I dont see any Saha in him at all. Sahas movement of the ball was sublime, and he was also fantastic in the build up to our attacks. He had the size to hold of a defender like John Terry with his back to goal. Actually a pretty good target-man...

If I where to compare Dioufs style with someone it would probably have to be Eto.

That'll do...

E'to >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Saha

Saha or Eto'o, eh?

Got a funny feeling he's never gonna be compared to a striker who isn't black...

I think that's more to do with the fact that Saha was the last lead the line striker we had, and Eto'o is from his country.

I couldn't put a finger on a style of play he looks like, there is only one Mame Biram Diouf after all.

Yeah, I was being a bit of a smart-arse to be fair.

It's one of redcafe's peculiarities though. You never see a player being compared to someone who is a different colour.

Tough-tackling, mobile black CM = next Vieira/Ince. Tough-tackling, mobile white CM = next Keane/Robson. It's just the way we roll.

Due to the new ruling of only comparing him to black players, my Alan Shearer comparison is out now.

Yeah, I was being a bit of a smart-arse to be fair.

 It's funny because it's true.

It doesn't sound a awesome if you compare him to say Craig Bellamy or Andy Johnson.

It does happen occasionally, but usually with a "the black..." or "the white.." in front of it. Diouf for example could be the black Solskjær.

Mame's off the ball movement is arguably his main asset and he certainly involves himself in build up play. And the ability to hold someone off is down to strength, not size, and Mame held his own against the likes of Reginiussen and Madsen. There's a natural aggression to his game that I don't see in Eto'o's.

It is down to strength, but strength is also - at least to a big extent - down to weight. Saha probably got 10 cm on Diouf (Diouf looked smaller than Solskjaer), and I would guess he also has about twenty pounds on him. I have strongt doubts that he will be able to the job Saha did as a "targetman" for us during the 06/07 season. I was a big fan of Saha, and in my opinion one of his big strenghts was that he could find space behind the defenders - like Diouf - but also be a targetman. It made him unpredictable, and difficult to defend against. He also has a great shot.

Regarding the aggression you are probably right. Maybe even on the other stuff - I've yet too see it though. :)

Will I be the 1st one to say hand him the number 32 shirt?

From the few photos/videos I've seen of Diouf he looks fairly hench. Not the tallest but solid enough.

Hardly one of redcafe's peculiarities - it's representative of the media and poeple in general throughout the country, and I suspect overseas too.

That is also typical of the world in general.

What is one of redcafe's peculiarities is that he is likely to be described as,for example, the black Pele.

Nah, I reckon he's very close to 1,8 meters. Not quite as tall as Saha.

He's probably 5'10. Looks no taller than Ole or Eikrem in these pictrues, possibly even a little shorter than Ole (who is 5'10):

It's an objective measure. You got a better one?

How hard they kick a football? How quick they run? I doubt the home office employs football scouts.

If they don't have much international experience the quality of the club they play for and the level at which they're playing can be used to help judge whether or not a player is a "special talent".

Well that's silly Pogue, I doubt the Home Office would employ experts on every other occupation either, I wouldn't trust a civil servant to be an expert judge the skills of an electronic engineering imigrant on the basis of whether they went to a better university, at least football is more in the public domain. You could end up passing off say Lesotho's finest electronic engineer for the sake of an average Caltech graduate in the same subject, even when the other candidate has the ability to prove he can offer more.

There is a clear discrimination issue involved here, in the same way it's not objective to think that club prestige and noterity on top of being young is a measure of special ability, it may be just a measure of one's ability to hoodwink scouts.

Like all applications, it's the candidate's job to promote themselves at interview and provide the evidence and references to back it up.

Anyway performances in say international and club youth tournaments are more of a measure of individual ability than a substitute cameo in a Champion's League or Europa League match.

fckin hell...so another midget...is it so difficult to find young talented footballers that are at least over 1,80?

Something's a bit off with the perspective of them pictures as Eikrem looks shorter than Mame in the top one and taller than him in the bottom one. Mags is exactly 1.8 meters by the way (well, he was 6 months ago, considering how fast he grows these days he might be a cm or two taller by now). Mame is at the very least 1.78 as far as I can tell.
