PARK-A true unsung hero

Where? I was in Korean when United came to play FC Seoul and I haven't seen a single Park shirt over 2 weeks in Korea.

You sure about that? He's absolutely adored there. And part of the reason alot of fans get on his back is that they think he's only there to sell shirts...

I keep hearing people saying he sells shirts in Far East but I don't think Korean, Japanese and Chinese people are shirt-wearing sort of folks. I don't think Japanese and Chinese people would buy a Korean player's shirt considering the history in that area. I may be wrong but he isn't from where a large number of football shirts are sold and wore in public.

Edit: I am fairly certain that deep down Chinese and Japanese people are not very pleased to see that a Korean player plays for Manchester United. Chances of them buying Park's shirts? Somewhere between none and slim.

The claim is is that Park is even more liked than Ronaldo, Rooney or Beckham in Korea. He is often given the moniker as the best Asian player ever and is known all over in the region. Nothing to do with the debate but, his popularity over there is what people that don't rate him use as to why he is at United.

Becks - best marketing in the world, Ronaldo one of the best marketable players - we let them go but, we continue to hang to Park because of just marketing reasons? I think not.

Edit: It's not just shirts though - he probably appears in ads and other ways for partners of United.

Typical of FS's divergent replies which never focus on the critical issue - anyone watching Park for 45 minutes will see that he's a very limited player.

For once I'd like to see data on just how much direct income Park's name (and his alone) brings to the club. As for indirectly, we get Korean sponsors because of him, but in the absence of their bids, we'd just end up accepting bids from other companies.

There are something like 1.2m United credit cards in Korea. I have no idea how much money that makes, but he's great for marketing there and throughout Asia. Plus, he performs on the field. What more could you ask?

I hope that part is rhetorical, especially considering that to a post asking for numbers, you state that you can't provide any numbers. Which is sort of like your spouse telling you that he/she is not going to the market and then five minutes later you ask them: 'You're not going to the market, right?' Which can result in either an aneurysm or a really annoyed look.

You do realize that the post you replied to is asking the "Park as shirt seller" brigade (of which post-Ronaldo and post-Park's more prominent role there are increasingly few) to provide concrete numbers instead of simply parroting unfounded claims, right?

So again, to these people: How much do we get from his image rights, if anything? Numbers, please, or face it, the whole "he makes the club so much money" doesn't happen to any degree that would entail the club hanging onto him for anything other than footballing reasons.

Said reasons being those which pretty much everyone here has described in painstaking, repetitive detail to the point that the monotony has possibly broken the minds of a few, who must be contrary for the sake of balance in the force.

We can't give you numbers because those numbers probably don't exist!

All you need to know is that Park is huge in South Korea - a bigger celebrity than Ronaldo, Rooney and probably even Beckham (whom they adore too). And that doubtless gives us money from South Korea. Those 1.2m credit cards too speak volumes.

You're basically asking for something that nobody can provide. I simply don't think we need that to know that Park contributes quite a lot in terms of income and fanbase from the East.

Yes, and an assist today. Good Job!
Nani and Park today.
Nani spoilt more than a hand full of chances but at least he got 1 assist.
Park also got an assist.

Wonderful cameo today. He's playing fantastic at the moment, showing that he's much more than just a defensive winger.

Great cross for berbatov's goal also layed a nice ball onto his head from the left, very inventive. So much more to His game than merely running
around as some put it,The movement He has is second to none and He is tricky in tight situations lost on most with eyes.

Jamie the twat Redknapp said it was a Beckham-esque cross...and you can't really argue with it...just nonchalantly swept it into the box with some pace and whip, straight onto Berba's head. Couldn't really miss...

Also his first cross to Berba was quite good (technique-wise) no idea how he managed to get that one in.

Talking about technique..what about Berba's little cheeky pass after the second goal? Showboating.

I'll be the first to tell you that Korea is not a society where they wear jerseys of their favorite players. Hell, it's a culture where you can't go to class in sweats in college - every time you go to class feels like you're dressing up to go out for the night for the average American. People dress to impress almost all the time. Jerseys are not flashy and they are not trendy clothes and thus the market is smaller for that sort of apparel in Korea.

Also, one thing you have to understand about East Asia is they are not one people. They may look similar, but they all have different languages and civilizations. As in thousands of years of differences. There is also intense rivalry. Would the English buy jerseys of a world-class basketball player in the NBA from Italy just because they are from Europe? Probably not. Just like that, Japanese won't buy into United because of Park, just like Korean did not buy into Celtic because of Nakamura.

So "selling shirts" is probably not accurate at all. It's probably more of a global strategy to expand the sport and league and brand into the region, and thus attract more fans and viewers. With more viewers and fans, you get more sponsors, TV deals, etc. It's a much longer term strategy for the health and future for the club and league.

And to think some people on here claim he can't cross...

Indeed. With an incredible 6 assists in 3 seasons who could deny that he's an excellent crosser of the ball?

If you watch closely he characteristically slipped right before he made contact, resulting in an uncharacteristically well-delivered ball.

This would not surprise me.

I'd like to see the replay on MOTD before making further comment, but it's similar to his goal at Arsenal away in the CL last season. If he didn't fall over he may very well have missed. Still, if he can keep falling over and getting flukey goals and assists I won't complain.

Yes, yes very good. If only you were as good at spotting lame jokes as you are at making them, eh?

To be fair I'd rather a joke fly over my head than make a complete fool of myself in the Real Madrid thread. I think more and more posters on here are starting to get a bit bored of your arrogance and condescending attitude.

Oh dear. I'm getting advice from Logan about online popularity.

That's a worry. Time for some introspection methinks :(

I'm not offering you advice Pogue. I was just pointing something out. No great surprise that you've misread what I posted though. It's a common tactic of yours to reply to something that wasn't actually said. In fact it's quite funny watching more and more people point out the same character flaws that I've mentioned myself.

Quote from Park on team selection;

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The manager knows my strengths and that's why he chooses me for the biggest games,"

"Sometimes I miss the big games, but it really depends on the type of opponents we play.

"Often I'm in the team for tactical reasons, but it all depends on the style of the team we are playing."

That last sentence sums it up really. Time for people to let up a little on the guy.

He actually surprised yesterday when he made a cross with the outside of his football for Berbatov's header. It was so unexpected

I think it demonstrated the confidence he us playing with at the moment. It's great to see.

You're stretching now lads. He had a very good game and made a great cross for Berbatov's goal. No need to scrape the barrel by praising him for pulling off a very simple skill like crossing with the outside of his foot.

Correction, I didn't praise him.I just said it surprised me

Semantics.

Not at all.I'm a direct kinda guy, if I have to say something I'll try to find the most obvious words.

Unfortunately, it surprised Berbatov too ;)

Two quality crosses though. Three lung is hitting a rich vein of form right now.
Maybe, the pace on it was quick.IIRC he made some step overs before crossing too.Now that was impressive

Wow. You really are a dick, aren't you?

Brwned hit the nail on the head with his first reply to you in this thread.

I think I've hit the nail on the head with several replies to you in this thread too. Constant name calling says all too much about what you're about and you'r eprobably the single most arrogant and condescending poster on here. It's quite pitiful really. Coupled with the pretend doctor stuff and I actually feel sorry for you. You seem genuinely bothered about your status as a good poster and talk down to people as if it somehow makes you look better than them. Most people can now see through it though. Poor Pogue. :(

The thing is, I wasn't even criticizing Park just now. There were plenty of good things he did when he came on, why not praise him for those instead of praising him for pulling off something simple like using the outside of his foot.

Anyway I'd love to stay and chat but I've got to go and gloss the bathroom. No doubt you've got 'patients' to see too.
