Manchester United VS Chelsea

More than Rooney or the deflating performance of our players, what worries me the most is the energy expended by our players. We had no possession. Were running behind the ball all the time.

Hope we don't get a typical post CL performance. Like the one against Everton.

Couldn't agree more. We need OT to be absolutely bouncing on Saturday, and to be honest that doesn't really happen in these early kick offs.

I think our midfield will be either:

--Giggs---Carrick---Fletcher

or

-----------Park
---Scholes------Fletcher

Why not:

That formation works for me.

I'd usually insist Carrick starts a game like this but I can't see past his ineffectual faffing about last night and I wonder if Fergie will feel the same.

Quite possibly, although I'm not sure if Giggs is back to full fitness and also Scholes has started the last few games. It would be a bit risky to start both. Two young'uns plus an oldie seems more logical.

Code:
                VDS
 Rafael, Rio Vida Evra
Valenia Carrick Fletcher Nani
               Giggs
                 Berba

Neville needs a break - can only figure mental fatigue for the brain fart handball.

I don't think Scholes will start 3rd straight game.

Evra needs the game off as well but, it isn't going to happen. Time to make amends Paddy. An assist or goal will do nicely along with helping keep a clean sheet.

There won't be a lot of freshness in the side, Rio's had a break, so has Giggs, Berbatov, Carrick, Park and Valencia at somepoint this week, Fletcher, Scholes and Nani haven't played full games.

You still have Edwin, Nemanja, Patrice, Gaz all having played round about 180 minutes here, defence looks more jaded than the midfield, particularly the fullbacks.

Wonder if Carrick came off with a knock.

Yep. I'm pretty sure this will be the team

I think this is the team that will be played. Also wouldn't be suprised if Park plays instead of Giggs

I think Giggs will be vitally important this weekend. With the way Berbatov plays, we need runners around him - and imo Giggs is the best player we have for running within central positions and creating/scoring.

I'd go with a midfield 5 consisting of Valencia - Fletcher - Giggs - Scholes - Nani.

Carrick has simply been too disappointing of late for me. If he does play i'd have him in ahead of Scholes. Dropping Park is tough too - maybe bring him in for Nani. I don't see the chelsea full backs doing that much against us, not the right side anyway (as far as I know both Ivanovic and Bosingwa are out aren't they?) so I don't think we need to go too defensive on the left. Also, again with the way Berbatov plays I'm not sure we can afford to go defensive on the wings anyway - we will need support runners around him quickly.

Obviously I'd be happier with Rooney in the side, and the ineptness of the performance against Bayern worries me too - we can't afford a similar performance vs Chelsea, but I still think we can beat Chelsea, Fergie just needs to get the team and tactics right - and more importantly - the team needs to actually perform.

Nev--Rio------Vidic--Evra

-------Park---Giggs-------
Valencia-------------Nani
------------Berbatov------

You reckon this would work, with neither of Scholes (who needs a rest) and Carrick (who's been in poor form of late)?

Rafael--Rio------Vidic--Evra
----Park------Fletcher---------
Valencia----Giggs---------Nani
------------Berbatov------

This could do both of the next 2 matches?

What is Chelsea's likely lineup?

Im confident of a good result, cant wait :)

At a guess:

-------------Cech

Ferreira - Terry - Alex - Zhirkov

-----Ballack--Mikel--Lampard

--Anelka----Drogba-----Malouda

Really think we will and clearly should attack them down the flanks as their full backs are more than get-attable, the losses of Ivanovich and Cole are massive especially from a defensive perspective and with Ferriara and Zhirkov both vulnerable defensively and with our emphasis on wing play as it usually is anyway coupled with chelseas narrow midfield i expect most of our attacking play to be directed down the flanks, Valencia and Nani to run at Ferreira and Zhirkov will be our main objective i reckon.

Its just a shame Rooneys heading powers wont be on offer as i feel our wingers will have alot of success this weekend and would put many a cross in, with Berbatov in attack the likely and most natural supply to him will be passes into feet which maybe will suit us anyway as both Terry and Alex are very strong in the air but not so great against tricky players with quick feet..

My main worry from them is Malouda, think Vidic and Ferdinand know how to handle Drogba as well as any defence and im confident Evra can handle his countrymen on the other side but Malouda running at Neville worries me greatly and hes in stunning form, id play Rafael this weekend myself.

Surprisingly many seems to think Park won't play. Personally I feel quite confident that he will... As someone are saying, sooner or later Neville will need a break, and Rafael is better than him on the attacking bit, that will be even more important as Rooney are out... then again Robben will play the next one against us, Rafaels pace might be worth something there and maybe we are better of playing him midweek and resting Neville then, hope for something like this:

....................van der Sar
Rafael/Neville - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra
Valencia - Park - Fletcher - Giggs - Nani
.......................Berbatov

I think Ferguson will use the superior stamina at our midfield as a weapon against Chelsea, as he did last season when we crushed them. Lets not forget that Terry is the only first choice defender left at Chelsea, Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Cole and Carvalho are all out... We are not the only injury struck team there and Berbatov was great last time against Bolton and he cant wait to show his worth again.

Two facts to our favor:
Manchester United has done nothing but winning at Old Trafford in 2010.
After 7-1 matches such as the one against Villa last weekend, the team rarely scores many goals the match afterward.

I think having one poor game, when everyone else played bad too, is not a reason to exclude Carrick from the possible lineup. He actually did a lot of running and at the time of the substitution, he'd run about 1 km more than the average for the team at the time, if i remember correctly. He didn't play much with the ball, which may have tricked most

Fletcher, is a must.

Park did not look fresh, but again, who did?

Giggs or Park behind Berba is the most possible lineup

Fletcher-----------Carrick
--------Giggs/Park--------
Valencia------------Nani
---------Berbatov-----

No Scholes for me, because I think only one of Giggs or him would start.

Like I said before. I am less worried about the Chelsea game and more nervous about Bayern. But if we don't get past them /Bayern/ we don't deserve to be winning anything

I feel confident. 2-0 v Chelsea and 2-0 v Bayern

So true, I like the look of it but I'd say SAF will go with one more defensive MF so it's either Park of Giggs off.

I've said it so many times... Berbs will be our key player... and for the rest of the season...

I, for one, would love to see Giggs play in the middle because last year against Chelsea he was absolutely brilliant. He is just colossal in the front of the defense, making interceptions and making those important passes and opening up the play. He was like the main man linking the defense and the attack.

---------VDS---------
Neville-Rio--Vidic-Evra
Fletcher-Carrick-Giggs
Valencia-Berbatov-Nani

PIG, Rafael, JEvans, Gibson, Park, Scholes, Diouf/Macheda

i think we need to match them in midfield no matter who plays and to be hinest i would stick kiko in from the start. he is big and strong and would cause physical problems for terry etc, I cant see berbatov being too much of a nuisance to the big chelsea defenders

but now is berba's time to shine!! come on

........................Van Der Sar

Neville.......Ferdinand........Vidic........Evra

Valencia................Giggs.................Nani

.........................Berbatov
I think I'd go with that, I've gone with Carrick over Scholes because the former is more mobile. Although after his midweek performance Carrick would be lucky to keep his place.

Berbatov to continue his good form on Saturday too please!

We need some sort of result. A draw is acceptable; a win would be absolutely massive. I just have this fear we're going to get done in and the chavs are going to nick something and derail our season.

One of those games I'm really dreading. Come on United! Prove my gut wrong and get a result!

........................Van Der Sar

Neville.......Ferdinand........Vidic........Evra

...............Fletcher.........Carrick

Valencia................Giggs.................Nani

.........................Berbatov

This formation makes the most sense to me. We need a Berba to make a massive statement and our midfield to not only show up but dominate them. I think our back four are looking good and I expect Evra to have a stand out game to make up for his horror showing against Bayern. We need to score though cause I have a feeling the renties are good for at least 2 goals.

this team can beat chelsea

This is my chosen team as well...and for Bayern. Requires a dominant performance from the midfield and Berbatov needs to step up a shade
