Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich

I think we can safely say, no way Van Gaal predicted for Gibson starting - maybe thought outside chance of Rafael and perhaps Rooney but, I bet the game plan they worked on didn't include stopping Gibson's shooting.

I think Carrick may have played his last game for the club, we're gonna bring in a midfielder, and with the new squad system next year, one of our current midfielders had to be sacrificed, this decision to leave him out of two of the biggest games of United's season points to it being Carrick IMHO

Carrick starts.

He's starting.

A bit strange to start Gibson when Giggs is available.

I'm thinking Fergie wants energy to match Bayerns. Scholes and Giggs could work against Milan because they are old feckers. Bayern got about us in the first leg, we need to match them.

Guys Carrick is starting according to UEFA.com.

Park is out. I wonder why, must be a knock.

For the 50th time....Carrick is playing!

Are people speaking Mongolian on here??

Talk about jumping to conclusions.

Park didn't get in the 08 final team. He is still a great squad player. He's worth keeping even if only to play against Arsenal and Italian teams.

Oh come on the sarcasm was obvious ... was taking the lead from the immediate reaction that Rooney starting is an immediate reflection on Berbatov and SAFs lack of faith in him.

Not strange at all, a very rational decision. Watch this team play the most wonderful football of the season.
SAF saw how slow the Patriach (Giggs, Scholes, Neville) were against Chelsea. Only a fool repeats their mistakes.
We are putting Bayern to the sword here.

Gibson starting is a strange one. I'm not sure Fergie has in mind - ball retention maybe? I hope he isn't overthinking it. The midfield will be an extremely crowded place.

He's thinking...Scholes is fecking knackered and on shit form. Park is fecking knackered and not on the greatest form. Giggs is an option off the bench in a potentially 120 minute long match, and is probably knackered. Hargreaves is injured. Anderson is injured. Carrick and Fletcher need a partner alongside them. We need to score....Gibson!

Nani and Valencia need to perform tonight. If that happens we will score goals and go through.

omg Carrick doesnt start wtf??!!!1

I always assume that sarcasm doesn't exist in the Matchday forum!

For the sake of my sanity please use white text or :p smilie in the future!!

Nice team! :)

I never though Rooney would be starting. Let's hope he is fully fit and not being risked. But anyway the team has speed, invention and plentu of goal threat. Let's show Bayern what we're truly made of.

Cmon United!

Gibson isn't a strange choice when you think of the recent form of Scholes who clearly needed a rest. He will either step up to the challenge or be off early in the second half for Scholes, simple as that. I for one think he will step up.

Apparently he trained yesterday after the cameras had gone...

Alex you massive blagger.

really? in a game that we have to chase a bit he would know without question that this was always going to be the formation (gibson is bit a shock) 4-5-1 would always leave him out.

He can still play a huge part if we need the late pass to set up a goal or the deft touches to set up a scoring play.

If I was Berba I would be thinking, one big game I played and was so useless that they decided to start with a half fit Rooney. No shame in losing to a player of Rooney's caliber but I would feel worthless.

to be fair in the form Rooneys been in even at half fitness hes still better than most players who lead the line

Rooney's either fully fit or not fit at all. He won't lose match fitness in a week. If his ankle wasn't right he wouldn't start. No way would Fergie risk him missing the rest of the season if the ankle wasn't 100%

SAF has put the runners out there. Including Gibson. The only one out is Park, but I think it may just be fatigue

oh I agree ,but I dont think Fergie would play him if he was not 100% fit.

Im not too sure, this after Saturdays defeat this game is huge for the remainder of our season. He may have thought risking him tonight and losing him for another few games is worth the risk.

Didn't see the Bayern starting lineup posted - so this is what they have going:

Jorg Butt 22
Martin Gaston Demichelis 6
Daniel van Buyten 5
Holger Badstuder 28
Philipp Lahm 21
Bastian Schweinsteiger 31
Mark Van Bommel 17
Franck Ribery 7
Arjen Robben 10
Ivica Olic 11
Thomas Müller 25

Rooney starting =

Massive test for Gibson and Rafael. Hope Rooney will be okay.

No chance. Tonight is just one game. If he had any worries about the injury getting worse he could have started him on the bench.

Was going to post lineups from UEFA - but Ribbery, Robben and Shweinsteiger start. AND CARRICK PLAYS!

Nah I would say that Rooney has to be fullly fit for Fergie to play him

I would hope so, but I have a feeling that Fergie has lost a bit of faith in Berbatov especially when it comes to big games. It's probably a bit unfair because Berbatov plays better as one of a front two and we tend to play one up front in the bigger games.
