He certainly looks the business alright & the lad is only 16. Pretty excited about what the football future holds for this lad. I havent seen enough of him playing tho, but from what I have seen - he's a very well-rounded footballer -

Given that we're approaching the end of the season, it's inevitable that the papers are going to link us to every midfielder under the sun. However, has anyone been watching this guy throughout the year? Pogba's looking a seriously talented player, and it's not just a few of his attributes that stand out - he has an excellent physique, great technique, good vision and a nice shot and all. For his age, he's ridiculously well rounded, and I'm not half excited to see how he'll turn out.
Obviously, I'm not suggesting that we throw a 17 year old straight into the first eleven, but when you consider the talent of Pogba (and many others from the academy and reserves, to be fair), I'd say it'd be unwise to sign a midfielder this summer.
Any thoughts from anyone else who's monitored him this year?

The lad is clearly class. He, Cleverly and Eikrem look like extremely exciting talents. Yet we still have Petrucci.
He's at least 2/3 years away from being a potential first team player, and even then who knows whether he'll be good enough? He's taller and more physically developed then most of his peers at Academy level, an advantage that will disappear when he steps up to reserve level. He's very promising but I don't even think he's been the best player at Academy level to single him out.

I've not followed Pogba's progress but I don't think the need for another midfielder is as urgent as is made out with Hargreaves and Anderson coming back and there is Petrucci to consider as well who has always been put forward as another stellar talent.
On a similar note has Petrucci recovered from this long term injury yet?
I think he will get a few run outs next season probably in the CC to see what he can do.
I would be extremely surprised if he was involved at all at CC level. I think people are getting a little carried away.

I've never seen him play. What's he really like Pogue? People on here are always talking about the next *insert name of world class player here* but usually it's just people getting carried away.
Agreed, although I wouldn't be surprised to see him get some reserve outings under his belt next season.
We have too many midfielders already when they're all fit, and we have a hell of a lot of talented midfield players in the academy. Ultimately, I think it'd be more beneficial to hold off on signing another.
Hargreaves will be back next season, Cleverley will be back from his loan spell, Giggs and Scholes are sticking around for a bit longer and Anderson should be back from injury. I also find it bizarre to think that at least one of Petrucci, Pogba, Morrison and Eikrem won't make it here. We're simply overstocked.
There's a bunch of posts about him in the reserves, in which you can read opinions from people much more clued in about youth football than me.
He's tall, leggy, very good technique, composed on the ball and a good range of passing. Knows where the goal is and not afraid to get stuck in.
He's got every chance of becoming a top class central midfielder. But he's very young, has a long way to go and it's a mug's game making predictions about the prospects of teenagers.
Why not just throw him in and see how he does? He can surely feature in the reserves, and if he does well enough, he can play in the CC if its up to me. The same goes for any other young talented player.
just reading about some of these youngsters, gives a hint about why SAF wants to manage for quite a few more years.
Your initial post was about Pogba.
If we are to regularly play 3 in midfield it is not quite as overstocked as you think, and the jury is still out on Anderson and Gibson, Carrick's future may be elsewhere, no one knows if Hargreaves is over his long term injury concerns and Giggs and Scholes are only likely to have one more year left.
We also have no specialist attacking midfielder in that group.
I am optimistic that hopefully a few of the younger players will make it through to the first team, you missed out James and Tunnicliffe who have been as impressive as those you mentioned who I rate highly.
I just don't think there is anyone necessarily ready to step up and challange the current players for the next few years and it would be detrimental to gamble our near future on the potential of players coming through. As we have seen with Fletcher and Nani, it takes a while for young players to mature and gain authority in their game, it is rarely immediate unless they are a special talent.
He will probably play more games for the reserves, but there is no rush. Let him develop at a natural pace and increase the challenges when required so he doesn't stagnate.
I probably should've stressed the last bit clearer when I was going on about the others in the academy and reserves, though Pogba, for me, is the most exciting due to how complete he already is, hence why I bumped this thread.
Whilst I would also maintain that none of them are ready yet to compete in the first team, I feel it's worth waiting. Yes, there's a gap in the midfield, especially when Scholes calls it a day, in the form of a more attacking midfielder, but what we have now is easily strong enough. Irrespective of whether we play a 3 man midfield, which is usually just against the top teams unless my memory is failing me, we've got midfielders in abundance.
I've not seen much of James since he went out on loan, but he looked very Carrick-ish in his play. If I remember rightly, it was James who pulled off that ridiculous pass to Macheda to round off his hattrick against Newcastle in the reserve outing before THAT goal. Astonishing, that was.

But I agree. If we buy, buy quality but we shouldn't buy for the sake of it because the talent/potential is here. The two or three year talk is just that really.Aye, there's a lot of talk about signing player x, y and z on this forum, but it's not been our midfield that's prevented us from running away with the league; it's the fact that we've had to field about 25 different back fours during the course of this season. It's mental how we're still in with a chance of winning the league, albeit a slim one.

I'd like to see Eikrem in the CC next season. Before getting hurt, he was fantastic for the reserves. He'd also give us someone who can take a free kick.

Everytime I've seen the highlights of a reserve/U18 match hes played in, he's looked like he could make it.
Never know though! We need to strengthen our midfield now...we really can't wait for 3/4 years.

Even that wasn't really what ruined our season tbf. It was a dramatic loss of form from the first leg of our quarter final in Munich till we played Blackburn that ruined our season. That was one bad week indeed.
Frankly, when a kid is as talented as this guy looks, i wouldnt have objections to seeing him in the Carling Cup and the likes next season potentially. Rooney started playing at 16 (or was it 17?) for Everton, then look at the likes of the Da Silva's, Macheda etc. We dont need to mollycoddle all our youth players until they are 20 before even considering them for the first team.

In two words pretty much. There's bits and pieces to develop, we don't know his mental attitude off the pitch and you need the luck with injuries but he ticks most of the boxes and I think if you've not seen him yet, IF he develops.....he'll save the club 20million in the market easy.
And the potential really is here. I would say to most folk watch the kids more because the answer isn't always to look at what other clubs have. What's remarkable is King, Pogba, Keane, Morrison etc - are 4/5 years younger then becks, neville, neville, butt, scholes where when they got in. Thankfully we got the best man to know when to blood them in

this is the flaw in the only buy under 25's policy. the really talented youngsters that we've been hoovering up aren't ready yet, but buying other young players will only block their progress...Michael Owen is the answer (or Joe Cole...)
Giggs was 17/18 - There are glaring differences which you ignore. You keep making out i'm missing something but i'm not and if you look at the players I listed, I didn't mention Ryan. Pogba has every chance of making it and the years talk is just talk.
Sir Alex has shown he will play teenagers - even with no experience IF he feels they're ready.
The difference between this group and the 90's group was they were older, had a bit of spells away (but not Giggs), and they came in as a group to give us continuity added to what we already had. We could easily see that again because we've not replaced Ryan or Scholes yet.
Will we? No one knows but you don't cut off your options Pogue. You minimize any risk, if you feel there is a risk, buy using what experience others have to get people through games. It's what everyone does. So this 2/3 years if any talk is just that and it's not fact at all. Far from it.
