Anybody heard of this game? I'm really looking forward to it, it's Rockstar's newest game and it's built on the GTA IV engine. The game is set in 1908 in the southern parts of United States and also parts of Mexico. Just like in the Grand Theft Auto games you play in an open world, and the game is said to be even bigger than San Andreas.

Here's IGN's first look of the game, I recommend you to read through it, the game looks very promising:

The game will most probably be shipped late 2009 or early 2010 for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Here's some quotes from Gamespot's take on the demo they played:

While you'll be able to traverse great distances thanks to coaches and trains, horseback will also play a major part. Each horse will have different abilities; if you steal one from town it should be in fairly well-kept condition, or you can choose to rough it and train a wild stallion instead. No game set in the wilderness would be complete without some wildlife and Redemption features plenty of varmints to shoot. A dedicated "ecology" system ensures you'll encounter snakes, armadillos, cougars, wolves, coyotes, mountain lions, buzzards and even bears along your journey.

On our journey into another town we saw a woman whose stagecoach had broken down. On closer inspection, however, it was actually an ambush with several bandits appearing from behind the coach. Heading down the road, we saw a man being mauled by a pack of coyotes--you can choose to help him, but you risk having the pack turn on you instead. These events take place randomly around the clock

Oh, and you'll be able to go hunting, and catch animals or humans with your lasso:cool:

i loved Red Dead Revolver even though it had a lot of flaws

this looks fecking amazing though, i cant wait

This certainly looks impressive. Can't wait myself and Rockstar are the best when it comes to open world environments and making them believable and full of life.

The random activities sound amazing eg. riding through the desert when you spot a group of soldiers about to execute a blindfolded prisoner. You then get the moral decision of whether or not to save him.
Your decisions also affect how people react to you in the street etc.
Looks like two save files will have to be made; one for the good guy, and one for the bad. One for the ugly?

And lassooing wanted criminals after maming them then dragging them back to town on horseback sounds way too fun.

This game is actually giving me a slight twitch now. The production of an open world game set in the Wild West is long overdue. From what I've seen so far Rockstar look set to deliver....

EG hands on with the MP

Video

I hope the soundtrack is suitably Morricone inspired.

You know i liked GUN, even though it had a ton of flaws it was a really good experience and world.

Never played Revolver but this looks like it's going to be twice the game Gun was and i've got it preordered already.

It looks very good, but I'm waiting on the reviews. Apparently, there was a lot of in house strife during production.

never really gave this much attention before but having a look at it now i tink i may just have to get it

Can't wait. Seems sweet. Lost and Damned and Ballad of Gay Tony coming out next week for PS3 should allow me to have something to play in the meanwhile...

Am going to get this, sounds class.

Apparently if you buy it from different places you unlock extra things in the game.

if you buy from Amazon you get golden guns, somewhere else you get a better horse.. etc

Amazon's the cheapest I've seen.

It looks fecking brilliant ! Would love to give it a go. Oh wait........I don't have a fecking PS or Xbox

I rarely buy games anymore, but I'll definitely be buying this. Looks immense.

Just hope it's got a great single-player mode. So many games fail to meet my expectations these days because they rely too heavily on the online multiplayer element.

Can't wait for this now.

Red Dead Redemption: the best videogame ever?
Will a game based in the wild west, by the team behind Grand Theft Auto, take the genre to a whole new level?

The gaming community is gearing up for its biggest cultural event since the launch of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City eight years ago. That ushered in a new era of "open world" games, with cool soundtracks, multiple cinematic influences and rounded characters. Next week that game's creator, Rockstar, launches Red Dead Redemption, a sweeping open-world adventure, which is already topping the pre-order charts on Amazon.

Here, the player becomes an ex-outlaw making his way through a violent, lawless society. This will all sound familiar to Grand Theft Auto veterans. But Red Dead Redemption promises something much more intriguing. Set during the dying days of the old west, it's an elegiac investigation of a vanishing culture. As players ride through the game's spectacularly detailed environments, from the endless dusty scrublands of the Mexican border territories to the mountains of West Elizabeth, the sun realistically rises and sets in the looming skies. An eagle swoops overhead, its shadow falling across a corpse – a grisly touch Sergio Leone would have appreciated.

Game magazines have wondered for years why there have been so few western-themed titles, but I think it's obvious. Until now, the technology hasn't been there to replicate the scale of a John Ford landscape. It's much easier to model a skyscraper than a tree. Or indeed a cactus. This could be the first widescreen, giant LCD display cinematic gaming experience.

Perhaps what's most interesting though, is a sense of individual responsibility in the narrative. Lead character John Marston must find his own route through the madness of the Mexican revolution, and that might not necessarily mean perpetrating the sort of criminal carnage we're used to in the GTA series. He can help civilians in distress, and has an honour rating that rises with every good deed – the tabloids will doubtless be disgusted.

There is a step forward too in terms of storytelling and characterisation. While Grand Theft Auto is filled with comedy gangsters, Red Dead Redemption has wizened old snake-oil salesmen, cowardly drunks and educated prospectors scared senseless of the nightmare in which they find themselves. All are rendered in delicate detail – a long way from the jolting bug-eyed marionettes so often seen in games.

Although there is an overarching story, I suspect many gamers will spend more time simply camping, riding, shooting and foiling bank robberies. That is why Read Dead Redemption promises to have real cultural impact. Like the psychological thriller Heavy Rain, released earlier this year, it says that games really have grown up: they can present us with moral choices, they can make us experience living virtual worlds.

How long dya reckon it'll be before we get some video reviews from gametrailers.com and the like?

Only really heard about this the other day and it has gone straight to the top of my 'to buy list', even ahead of Final Fantasy XIII
