Despite Netherlands' loss, I think Wesley Sneijder should be a good shout for winning it. Although a Spain player seems more likely.

What say you?

I'd like to see Xavi get it. After some recent near misses i'd like to see him finally get the recognition he deserves.

Diego Forlan.

Club + Country performances IMO.

Sneijder is also a good shout, but I favour Diego but that's just me.

Nah, that won't happen. It was already bold enough to get a "second-tier" nation's player to get the WC award. Giving WPOTY to an Atletico Madrid player for his exploits in the Europa League would be a step too far.

WC aside it would have to be Messi, but the WC will weigh heavily so I would say Xavi. That would be well deserved TBH, he's been phenomenal for a few seasons now.

If anything, the WC showed how Messi would fare without the Barca midfield, and how ineffectual their passing game is without someone actually turning all that beautiful passing into goals. Messi owes to them as much as they owe to him.

Sneijder's form so far will be quickly forgotten after six months playing for FSW.

Messi or Xavi. I'd like to see Xavi get his recognition but have people forgotten how utterly brilliant Messi was last season.

Messi
Ronaldo
Xavi
Sneijder
Forlan

Would be the top five (if there were such a thing).

That said, you just never know how the voting goes in these things. Momentum is usually a massive factor - in which case Xavi and Sneijder would get some votes. I'm convinced that Diego will be in the thick of things as well. This might be one of those "Cannavaro" type years where winning big trophies plays a bigger part in choosing the winner than stats alone, especially since Messi and Ronny flopped at the WC.

Xavi or Sneijder would be great, will be surprised if Messi doesnt get it though

probably wont win it but for all their attacking style it was casillas who came up with several important stops in the world cup for spain........his real madrid team did win nothing this term and that might go against him........

think messi will win it , ahead of xavi and forlan

Xavi this time. Messi was just too big of a flop to get it.

I don't think Messi flopped at all. He may not have scored but he still played very well in 3 of their games.

He may have scored 0 but he could have so easily had 5 or 6.

Xavi. The mastermind behind Barcelona and Spain and he's slowly making a case it being him not Messi who's the real genius at the Camp Nou.

He did well against shit teams, did well against perennial chokers Mexico, but completely fell off the rails at the first real true test.

He was well below his usual league standard, which compared to the likes of Villa, Forlan, Sneijder, and Muller, made him look like a flop - especially when you consider that this was his chance to make himself Maradona-esque.

Considering no one was really truly outstanding in the world cup and he still did better than all his mains rivals from the club season for it, Messi is probably the most deserving of it.

I'd assume it'd be Messi-then Sniejder/Villa/Forlan/Xavi as the next 4 in whatever order really. Iniesta, Casillas, Puyol will probably all make the top 10, with something like Rooney and Ronaldo rounding it up or something.

Personal preference would be Iniesta or Rooney everytime, but neither deserve it at all, top 10 is fair for both.

Messi, 47 goals last season is just stupid and although he didn't have the best of World Cup's he is the BPITW and surely that's what the award is for?

47 goals doesn't make you the BPITW. Ruud scored 44 in 02/03.

Its the goals in the big games which count and Messi bottled it 3 times when it counted the most.

Sjneider is the bpitw right now. Anybody who can't see that has been living under a shell. Champions league winner and World cup finalist being the catalyst for the Netherlands charge. He deserves it above any other player, even Xabi.

Sneijder
Xavi
Schweinsteiger
Forlan
Villa
Messi (not only for the number of goals but the breathtaking beauty of some of them)

I'd personally give it to Forlan

Have to agree with Twisted.

Diego Forlan.

He pretty much - with a little help from his ugly strike partner - dragged Uruguay to the semi-finals! And he's been pretty sensational for club.

Forlan for WPOTY!

He will be there or thereabouts, hopefully he gets into the top 3 as that would be some achievement: two Golden boots, joint WC top scorer, Golden Ball and 3rd for WPOTY playing for Atletico Madrid would make for quite a trophy cabinet.

It's hard to overlook Sneijder's contributions for Inter and The Netherlands.

If Villa had scored the WC final winning goal he might be in for a shout, especially since players that secure moves to Barca and Real end up getting a huge publicity push.
