Danny Welbeck

Wonder what's going on with him - he apparently played in the reserves and scored against the Chelsea reserves but, we got thumped 4-1 (Nev played as well).

If he is going to Sunderland it would have been nice had already been there with Bent being injured and possibly out for the first game. Might have got a shot immediately to stake a claim.

Well my initial hunch (loan move to Sunderland only makes sense if Jones or Campbell is moving on) may prove correct, reports coming out of Sunderland that Stoke are in talks to buy Kenwyne Jones, if he went that'd make a lot more sense for Welbeck as he'd then be one of 3 competing for 2 places.

Local journalists are suggesting Sunderland would reinvest the money from Jones on N'Zogbia.

I think if they sell Jones they will keep Waghorn.. So make that 4 competing for 2 places plus he is versatile so will be in with a shout for the Wing slots incase Sunderland decide to play a 451/433.. Possibly even from the wings in a 442?

Probably true, but Danny would probably (tricky I know) be 2nd or 3rd choice instead of 4th. Problem with wide position is if Sunderland did move for N'Zogbia he'd presumably play left wing

Not that Tricky.. Welbeck is surely more proven for United and on a higher level than Waghorn.. Although I am not so sure if he will be above Campbell.. I know he has the potential to be better but Campbell is a hard worker and that makes him more of a safe bet..

If he applies himself, I've no doubt he'll get ahead of Campbell. He just has bundles of talent and can play pretty much any role in a forward line.

Whether he does put that effort in is another matter, I know from reading Preston fans' views on him that plenty thought he just didn't want to be there. Hopefully a slightly more prominent stage will help.

Sorry, meant tricky to predict things - Sunderland could sign another striker, could play a 4-5-1, who knows. Also, while I think Welbeck is a more talented player than Campbell, it's obviously in Sunderland's interest to develop Campbell, less so in the case of Welbeck.

I agree 100% I was going to mention that.. Like I did in another thread to which GB said I was talking rubbish..

What you guys don't seem to get is that a player (who is on loan at another club) may be potentially better than all the other strikers at a club (E.G Rossi at Newcastle) but that doesn't mean the club who he has gone on loan to have to take the risk of developing him and giving him game time that he needs to succeed.. They are merely bringing in a player as back-up or to make up the numbers or to offer different options off the bench (and hence saving millions rather than bringing in someone and paying a transfer fee+wages for atleast 3-4 years) Do you guys really think Rossi would have played so little at Newcastle if he has been their player outright?

Its something to think about.. You guys say things like if Diouf can't get a game over the like of Jason Roberts we are fecked cause he is shit.. But the matter of fact is that Rossi could not get a game over Antoine Sibierski.. One is a young prospect for the full Italian squad, the other has never even been considered for the France squad be it the u21's or the u17's..

Still find it a bit strange that a deal isn't done unless we are the hold up. With the season around the corner - the club getting him would want to get him so that he can train and work with the squad - even from our perspective we'd want him to get acclimated to the club before the season starts versus just getting thrown in.

I actually hope he goes to some place where he'd at worst be 3rd choice striker.

According to F365 Kenwyne Jones is off to Stoke. The Welbeck deal's making more sense now.

Would be great for Welbeck if that's the case. With both Campbell and Welbeck able to play on the wing too, you'd imagine he'll be getting plenty of games even if the other strikers are in good form.

Welbeck is still at Utd so maybe now they'll agree on the deal to Sunderland.

It's good news for Welbeck, but are Sunderland really going to go into the season with a front line consisting of Bent, Campbell and Welbeck?

Jones has completed his switch to Stoke. With Bent hurt, they'll need some cover soon. Welbeck loan still not announced but, maybe if it is by tomorrow then he has a chance to play on the weekend.

Bruce: "It would be unfair to say that he (Welbeck) is the replacement for Kenwyne," added Bruce. "There's still a couple of weeks to go in the market and hopefully the money is there to go and spend it."

They are looking at Craig Bellamy possibly. Hope that doesn't happen for Welbeck's sake).

Good luck to him, I honestly think he can become a really good player and play for us for many years.
