MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

Just seen Sir Alex's press conference. He handled it with class and dignity. He was clearly disappointed in Wayne but he remained respectful throughout. It makes me proud that this man represents our club and it contrasts with the complete lack of respect Rooney has shown for everyone associated with the club.
I trust Sir Alex to deal with this matter in the best interests of the club, whether Rooney stays or leaves

I think this is the best way we can all deal with this.

Looking completely on the bright-side of things and how Sir Alex has shown himself to be a complete cut above all other managers by what he did today.

He's only extended the gap of class between himself and the player who once apparently had a father-son-esque relationship with him.

If a deal's been agreed for next summer (contracts signed) it can't be pushed through earlier.

Say's who? There can't have been an actual signed contract.

Also after Ferguson going to the media saying that Rooney's disrespected us, what's stopping Rooney's camp from exposing the deal then? As a way to hit back at SAF and United?

Who say's they won't? Besides, how much more of a hate figure would that make him then? It'd be pretty stupid on their behalf, but then again they've already played into Fergie's hand.

Cantona fears for rooney future

Cantona feels Rooney needs advice
Manchester United legend Eric Cantona fears Wayne Rooney's top-flight career could be over within five years.
Rooney, 20, is already a key player for United and England but Cantona is worried about his lifestyle.

He told the Daily Telegraph: "Rooney can be the best in the world at 25 if he knows you need to train hard, go to bed early and be careful what you eat.

"But he could also be out of the best teams, out of England, out of the best 100 players. Completely out."

Cantona feels Rooney needs advice now to ensure the longevity of his career.

He added: "This is very, very important. All the best players in the world knew all the time these kinds of things are very important.

"I am sure (United boss) Alex Ferguson is very strong and will help. Rooney is still young.

"But somebody needs to say it to him. The last time I saw him I wanted to say it but I saw him only quickly."

The former France international, 39, points at Robbie Fowler as an example of a teenage talent who has not fulfilled his full potential.

He said: "Fowler was so good at 18, and four, five years later, at 23 or 24, finished, not even playing regularly for England, not even for the best teams. Finished.

"Completely. Out. Why?

"Clubs should ask why this kind of player is out. They say in England it is very difficult because of the media pressure. But it is not more difficult than in Italy, Spain or Brazil."

Hmmmm!

he can feck himself, clearly manchester united is at fault for him cheating on his wife and clearly manchester united is at fault for making him play horrible for England and the last 8 months

God.....this is all very disappointing. I've been out all day (missus fractured her fecking ankle) and I've just come in to this.

Is this day going to get any better

It just baffles me. Why would you want to leave United ?

Me too, it's hard to even imagine a reason, especially with the time scale, considering he's been thinking this over for a while.

Even so, why opt to leave this way, with so much negativity?

Big difference between Catona's comments and Keane's comments.

Respect to Fergie 100%.

Handled that 100% brilliantly. Pulled a real rabbit out of the hat, because I for one would never have expected him to speak so honestly and candidly.

I fully expected "thats bullshit" kind of stuff, but he was open, honest and completely realistic.

Whatever the reasons are for him wanting out ( and I suspect its much to do with the issues in his private life again ) Fergie hasnt come out slating him, or made things worse.

For the first time in many years I think Fergie has shown a human side to him where players are concerned, and the look on his face suggested to me he feels really really let down by the way Rooney has acted.

If a contract hadn't been signed agreeing that Rooney would be sold for a given fee and receive a given salary, then what's stopping city from breaking any verbal agreement and signing him on a Bosman next summer, instead of sticking to a "gentleman's agreement"? It was widely reported that a physical contract had been signed for Ronaldo to be transferred in 2009, in the summer of 2008 (and that if Real didn't cough up, there was a penalty charge of around 30 mill, that they'd have to pay to Ronaldo).

If he gets booed then I cant for a minute blame the perpertrators.

I think a lot of people are missing perhaps the most important issue here: We're now gonna be trash on FIFA 11 :(

Well considering the next home game against Spurs (providing he's fit, -[providing he's even injured anyway]-) will be just after the Anti-Glazer march, and a late kick-off, I doubt those of us going are going to be in a very forgiving mood.

I'm not saying that United had already done a deal, is that what you think?

I'm saying that it is entirely possible that Rooney and City/whoever have a deal in place. Now today could force the issue quicker, especially as now other clubs will be interested.
