MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

REdknapp did not manage to convince joe cole signing for spurs let alone rooney

Thats just my opinion. I know there are plenty of threads around regarding Rooney, but if I tried to say this in any of them, it would just be lost among the masses of hysteria and outrage.

I've just read that letter to Rooney sent by the stretfordend, so the inspiration of this thread is from there. Also, hearing different views and learning new information has changed my thoughts repeatedly in the last hour or so, so I apoligise if I say anything contradictory that I may have said elsewhere.

Man Utd fans have traditionally always supported their players even through the worst of times. Ronaldo is recently the most famous example of this, with the 2006 World Cup scandal and continuing to support him even after he had asked for a move to Madrid in 2008(makes you wonder the difference between that and what Rooney has done...).

I think Rooney will stay. This is just my gut feeling, but I think it will happen. What are his motivations for leaving? Its quite likely something has happened behind the scenes (i.e. shagging Vidic's wife and attempting to get as far the feck away as possible), but there are 3 main deciding factors.

Getting away from the media

Money

Ambition

Getting away from the media: This would mean a move abroad (obviously, for you numbnuts out there). Lets face it, the media are cnuts in this country and although they may be as worse elsewhere, the scrutiny on players is usually at its worse when the said player is plying his trade in the country of origin, i.e. Rooney getting stick by the English press playing in England, Torres getting stick by the Spanish press playing in Spain. Had the allegations of his private life come out and Rooney was playing in Spain, it would've been nowhere near as intense in that country. A breakaway from the media may help him resolve his family issues.

Thing is, I just dont see it happening. Madrid dont need him and have even admitted that, Wayne isnt the brightest spark so learning a new language would be difficult, whilst the most important thing here is that he's quite likely to be sent off in every match...The culture is completely different.

Money: Wayne, please dont let this be true. Theres only one destiniation that would fulfil this motivation that couldnt be done here and thats City. I had always thought of Rooney as someone that "would play for £500-a-week", so i'd be disappointed in him because of that perception more than anything.

Ambition: A move to Chelsea perhaps? A lack of transfer spending in recent years may have made him question the clubs ambition. Apparently he refused to sign a contract August 14th. This would mean the transfer window would still be open so can he use that as an excuse?...but its also scarily close to the day Ozil signed for Madrid :nervous:. I jest, but Chelsea are the reigning Champions and continue to look seemingly invincible, but even then I wouldnt be able to understand this decision if ambition was the deciding factor. We went 2 years without winning anything while he was here.

I think now everything has been made public, he will understand that leaving Man Utd is a close reality. Legends such as Sir Bobby Charlton, Giggs, Neville etc are sure to have a word with him. The grass isnt always greener. He has up until January 1st to decide and I think he will be persuaded to sign the reportedly £160,000-a-week contract by us. A move elsewhere just doesnt add up.

I also think some of the replies have been just a tad harsh...I know its all said in the heat of moment and it may come as a shock to most - if not all - of our fans, but I genuinely dont think he wanted it to be known this way. What do you all suggest he had done?

I think the most important thing to consider is that, like i've said, something may have gone on behind the scenes that we dont know, which is why he wants out, but I just have this feeling that whatever the result, be it Rooney goes or stays, there will be a happy ending for Man Utd and at the end of the day, thats all that matters.

if he played for that, he wouldn't be able to spunk 200 quid for a pack of cigs.

To be honest, I'm so angry I might play football manager and use it to manually lower all of Rooney's stats.

That'll teach him

FWIW, I've already done that on my FM Saved Game.

Ahh but he acted the same way at Everton.

exactly the same way.
My husband ( an Evertonian ) followed Rooney's game closely - even making me watch him in the Youth Cup, telling me he was going to be the next big thing.
I watched him lift his shirt with a t shirt on underneath saying " once a blue, always a blue " and then he left to join us the next season.
Now he telle me he knows how I feel.

Tbh, I'm not nearly as upset as when Ronaldo left.

I'd rather not have a little shit like him in our shirt !

All I hope is that he doesn't join City and that we get upwards of £35m odd to spend again.

If he does join City guaranteed you won't hear the end of it "once a blue always a blue" "welcome to manchester" times 1000.

SAF looking so deflated - could this be the beginning of him calling it time on and retiring as well?

Rooney is not top 5 in the world at his position. You really need to get over it. He doesn't even have a recognized position that his solely his. Supporters wanted him in the hole, SAF said he is best used as a CF and played him as a true no.9 and on the left wing in the past. His best season was when he played leading the line. He's only had one stand out season and even then he wasn't THAT great. Your rose tinted glasses are still on, take them off.
I really need to get over what exactly? Rose tinted glasses? You know my entire opinion from one post on the subject, do you? feck off you patronising pillock.

He comes into every pre-season unfit, lacks the training discipline of Ronaldo. Every season he goes through a patch of inconsistency. For a striker he is nowhere near as clinical as his peers in front of goal.
True, he isn't the most clinical striker around but the work he puts in that you don't get from most of his peers doesn't exactly count for nothing, does it? The argument that he turns in for pre-season unfit and isn't as disciplined in training as Ronaldo (like you know for a fact) means jack shit in the discussion on whether the lad is a world class player.

His first touch and technical ability on the ball are that of a Englishman.
Well, you've certainly got me there. That is a real shitter. What, with him being Brazilian and all....

Agreed. I don't know why everybody is acting surprised. He has always had a c*ntish side to his character and obviously loyalty has always been a value he doesn't know. I was never buying into the 'oooh, Rooney is such a passionate footballer and a die hard Red' thing. Rooney is a mercenary and quite a bad one.

As long as we buy a proper replacement, he can sod off as far as I am concerned. I always hated his attitude and lack of discipline and unfortunately the last weeks have confirmed that impression.

Well, I don't know how much City've offered, and trust me, they've offered him a contract....but one can only assume it's a lot more than he's getting at United, and that type of cash can make a mercenary out of anyone. That being said, I still expected more from Rooney. Oh and I've just been listening to Ballague and he said Mourinho and Real suspect he's already made a verbal agreement with City. So, my hunch yesterday was right.

I'm more shocked. We all knew Ronaldo was about to move....but Rooney?!! it was totally out of the blue.

 You've had your tongue up Rooney's bum since you first turned up here. 'Our Wayne' this and 'Our Wayne' that...

I think such vitriol is unnecessary. We've seen from training photos that he's still on good terms with the likes of Scholes, Neville and Giggs. We heard today that SAF has accepted Rooney's decision. Therefore, it's best to wait and see both what club he goes to (which will reveal a lot about his reasons for leaving) and to hear what Wayne Rooney himself has to say on the matter. Declaring him a mercenary at this point is simply stupid.

This week I'm mainly hating the people of Osaka, Japan. How about you?

feckin Ell!!!!

I heard the rumours yesterday, but kind off dismissed them. Been busy at work & got in the car tonight & heard a clip of SAF's interview...fcuk me :( OK now I've watched the full interview so I'm gonna say my piece before reading the Caf's reaction :nervous:

I'm hoping Rooney has misunderstood SAF's reasons for dropping him & given a little time to think about it will change his mind & stay. We're the best club for him given all the shit going on in his personal life. The hate going to City would generate would just pile on more shit...though he has form for not giving a feck about his fans. Madrid would be a circus & I can't see him wanting the attention, or the competition for places. Barca maybe...but they've just signed Villa & are nearly as skint as us!

I've got a feeling it will be Chelsea if he does go. He gets away from Manc, but gets to stay in the UK, gets more money & still has a good chance of winning everything.

If he's not happy he has the right to move on...as long as he doesn't go to City  I won't hate Roon...I'll enjoy the memories & hope he lives to regret it.

My god I am shivering at this news.

Absolutely gutted.

Our only superstar is going to leave. The gloss is fading in our squad and the debt is going to prevent it from returning any time soon

out of the blue yes, but he's been so rubbish lately, do you really care, Spoony?

He's been rubbish because he doesn't want to be at Old Trafford. And yes, I do care....he's a brilliant player when he's on fire. I'm also pissed off because our team looks naff now thanks to a few million of City's dinars. A couple of years ago we had Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney leading the line, who would've thought they would move on and Owen would take their place. But yeah I love watching him play for United and yes I'm gutted.

Bobby Charlton
Ryan Giggs
Paul Scholes
Duncan Edwards
Dennis Law
George Best
Gary Neville
Nobby Stiles

The list goes on. You could have joined it Rooney. But alas joining that list proves itself to be one of the hardest achievements in world football, it acquires the greatest quality any player can possess off the field, a Passion for United beyond all else.

CC - Chelsea...hmmm...Mourinho could go for Drogba which would allow Rooney to move to Chelsea.

BTW, if Rooney is gone, then you have Giggs and Scholes retiring maybe next summer, and perhaps Evra and Vidic may move on as the dominoes start to fall... does anyone thing Mourinho would really come to United after SAF retires?

Or would this be perfect for Mourinho to build his own squad, something he'd probably prefer to do?

Getting a bit ahead of myself here but just wondering out loud.

Rooney left relegation -dodging Everton for the biggest club in the land and the possible glory that comes with it. If he moves on now at very best it'll be sideways. There's a profound difference, one that lends credence to the thought that its's all about money.

Then you need to re-evaluate your defition of "close"

Or maybe i'm not one of those many spoilt people who thinks we have a divine right to be reaching every final and in the running for the league until the final game.

If we get knocked out in the quarters, unluckily, with a relatively easy semi next....or get beaten to the league by a few points then, in my opinion, we did fantastically well and came close.

But, as ever on here, this is turning into a completely irrelevant argument.

I'd bet anything that if you did a poll of every professional involved with the game that the vast majority would rate Rooney as world class.

We will rain down on him a cacophony of boos with all the force of a thousand hataks and uber asgard beams.

I think he will stay.

I just watched Fergies interview from MUTV. As long as what Fergie says is 100% true, watching that must have made Wayne think hes at the right club.

Genius from Fergie.

Hope Coleen Rooney is waiting for the ugly feck to sign a big fat contract before sending in the lawyers to tear him a new arsehole.
The lads just a twat who will eventually implode and feck it all up, and end up a gaza like character.

I'm hoping Rooney has misunderstood SAF's reasons for dropping him & given a little time to think about it will change his mind & stay.

He indicated that he wanted to leave to Gill on the 14th August, well before he'd been dropped.

fecking hell I just turned on iTunes on random, the first song to play was Brake My Heart by Malcolm Middleton, with the opening line...

"You're going to break my heart I know it" :(

If he went to City, would we get (or want) Adebayor in exchange?
