MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

I was in work all day and following most of this on Twitter. From Rio's reaction I'm guessing training was before the press conference and the players didn't know?

bollocks. the lads in the dressing room are one of the first to know.

back when ronaldo wanted out, fletcher said how all the lads knew for a while that he wanted to leave.

The fact that he said that fans shouldn't be chanting his name at the weekend, to me signals that his time at OT will be up very shortly, and there's no repairing that. No doubt about it.

Yeah nail on the head. It all basically shows that both the team and SAF knew Rooney was on his way since the Summer. They tried to resolve it but Rooney was having none of it so they probably tried to keep things on the Q.T but there's only so much you can take as a team and manager when you know more than the fans do.

SAF was right to let the cat out of the bag and I'm certain so are the team. It's very damaging to moral when all a team hear is a players name being chanted who they know doesn't give a feck about the fans or the club

Good riddance I say

Anyone who thinks he's staying is blowing bubbles against a tide, to be honest.

He's as good as gone, it was all over Fergie's face and it was evident from Fergie's words and tone that it is very much the case. It's a terrible blow, an unexpected betrayal, but he's a goner. Just deal with it and move on.

who knows, maybe fergie was sensing something too... We ve been stocking strikers lateley.....berbatov, macheda, owen, welbeck, diouf, hernandez

Why do people keep thinking this? Real Madrid and Barca don't want him, they already are fully stocked with just as much or even more talented players in the positions that Rooney can play. His lack of true technical ability with the ball at his feet would be found out in Spain. His style of play is not fit for La Liga.

and at this point there are MANY individuals I would rather have playing for my team

Jimmy fecking Hasselbaink scored 24 goals in 34 matches over in La Liga, and unless I'm mistaken he wasn't well known as a first rate technician.

I seriously hope people are not already rewriting history here. I no longer wish to see Rooney playing for United again, and I never thought he was one of the top 3 players in the world, but when fit he was scoring against the very best for United.

It'll be interesting, but ive meet a few people around Europe this year and whenever i've asked them if they regard Rooney World Class all said no. They said he was a special kind of player but none would go as far as saying he was world class.
ask any football fan outside of England who the top 5 strikers are, bet you the majority won't even think of Rooney

more pertinently, how would you react if Wayne did a huge U-turn and said he wouldnt mind staying afterall, citing negotiation tactics?

Aye

How could agreeing a deal with the player and not his club not be considered tapping up? That seems like the very definition of tapping up.

Agreed. But every club does it, it's just a shame when it happens to one of our players.

I don't think Rooney will play again for United. He might not even set foot in Old Trafford. There will be a deal done and he'll be sent on his way - hopefully abroad

Where is Rooney camping? If it's the North East, lets send Gazza up there. Hopefully his offering of beer, chicken and some common fecking sense might turn his head.

you mean the way some did the day/days after/still to this day, when Ronaldo left? no way, I would never do that...

I hope not. He's going to be holding other players back when he already knows he doesnt want to be here. Might be our best player but his form is telling otherwise just now. I'd much prefer a Berba - Hernandez partnership considering thats going to be the future unless we sign somebody else.

Agreed

It's depressing to think that a day has come when all of us would be talking this way bout Rooney :(

To answer the OP...YES! And to the hilt.

Rooney, just like every other player at Manchester United, is nothing more than a employee answerable to Fergie. What Fergie says, goes.

Rooney's actions in the last few days, and what has become clear today, the last few months puts that "SAF v Rooney: Who would you rather lose" directed thread on here into perspective. A classless brat, easily charmed by the seduction of cash vs The greatest manager ever, loyal to this club for nearly a quarter of a century, and who embodies everything that is good about the game. It was a no-brainer before this came to light but even more so now.

Mourinho feels it to be the case which is why he won't be bidding. I see no reason why it's not true. Otherwise there's no way he would've shown his cards.

Agree about the verbal agreement, but still retain some hope that it might not be City. However, If not Real or Citeh, there would be no other club which can offer a better deal.

Great post.

Maybe they didn't, maybe they just felt something wrong in the vibes between Fergie and Rooney. One thing's certain: Now they know.

ask any football fan outside of England who the top 5 strikers are, bet you the majority won't even think of Rooney

Then ask any professional player or manager and you would find very different results.

You only have to look at the likes of RAWK, Blue Moon and some of the muppets on here to realise that the majority of football fans know nothing about the professional game. No matter how much they would like to think they do.

Paul Merson reckons Rooney's been tapped up.

He also said Rooney was definitely starting after seeing him arrive at OT on Saturday

That said I wouldn't argue with him here. It's such a U turn from Rooney, something has to have been sorted

Guess we'll find out who soon enough. If he is determined to go to one particular club, his value plummets

I think its quite easy to read between the lines and see that he has been tapped up. But the question is, by City or by Madrid? If its Madrid, at least he wont be playing in the same league and there are one or two decent reasons why he might like to go there. If its City, there's only one reason he'd go there... Because he's a fat, balding, greedy cnut.

I still think that if it was Madrid, it'd have been all over their paper for months like Ronaldo.
