MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

Does anyone really think he gives a flying feck about the fans? He is a rich young football playing man who makes more than anyone, possibly everyone put together who pays to go and see a match at OT. Football is a business - this episode has merely confirmed the soullessness of it all. It's results (financial) driven. Losing Rooney will have meant more losses for the Glazers. Rooney had the bargaining position here - he used it, and got himself a fat wage at a club he probably didn't really want to have to leave. He's played the game and done well. If you think he actually cares about the fans, other than those in balaclavas who might actually threaten him with a pucnh, kick or bit of vandalism, then you are naive if you ask me.

I don't think any fan here actually assumes that Wayne Rooney will give any thoughts to us. But we are fans and football is also about emotions, so people will discuss their emotions and thoughts. Do I think that Wayne Rooney is giving a shit about my thought? No. Do I still have to express them? Yes.

So many people on here insisting he's an utter cnut, we don't need him anyway... what nonsense... I'm not so naive as to not expect some bloody negotiational bullshit every now and again, and I didn't have a pop at him being a cnut... I won't have to make my second U-turn on Rooney in a week in order to get back behind him.

Valuable lesson for a lot of people on here, I hope.

If you can't see the damage this has done I really pity you. But...you gloat away and enjoy your moral victory. Oh no you have no morals do you?

You think Fergie's started placing individuals over the club as well?

Being fair to Fergie, this was most probably out of his hands anyway.

United is now a business, and for all the talk, Gill runs the club, and if he thinks United is better off keeping Rooney then Rooney is staying.

I could well imagine Fergie wanting to volley Rooney back up the M62 if he could do what he really wanted.

...........

If he doesn't sack Stretford for what would be a catastrophic advising error, then it looks suspiciously like a plan that worked out well.

.......................

I said that same thing here a few minutes ago, now that WOULD be a good signal for him to send right now.

To bomb at the world cup and to have the right team and tactics to win the whole are 2 very different things.

When Rooney will have more than the one season he had in which he will display quality performances regularly then yeah a comparison with the very best in the world will be in order

Yes with the way you did it.My judgment of him as a player has nothing to do with the latest events.I just think that just because he's 24 and at a certain well doesn't mean with certainty (the certainty you displayed) that he will be among the best players at 28.You would need him to have a proper hygiene and more consistency with his game.

Yes but...Rooney has had other great seasons where he has shown all his qualities, he sacrificed alot himself when Ronaldo was here and had his amazing season.

He's already among the best players now, current form aside, so when he's 28 and those 'greats' you mentions are ever closer to retirement why won't Rooney still be amongst the best? Obviously he could have injuries or whatever, but I really don't follow.

Improving his hygiene? I assume you meant cleanliness in front of goal rather than his habits of deodorant? Although that could be a fantastic thread.

It feels incredibly odd to say this, but I'm in agreement with fred and Lailani right now.

The man is an absolute flying weapon. He's treated not just the club but the fans, the manager and the players like complete dirt. Acting bigger than the lot of them, acting like he deserves assurances from Manchester United and not the other way round, disparaging the achievements of the club and its manager during his hugely successful time here and - worst of all - turning on the one and only party who were still completely in his corner following a horrible World Cup, the worst period of form in his career and the worst period of scrutiny in his private life, and trying to engineer a way to either leave us, or bleed us for money...It's a disgrace

And if this has just been about getting more swag in his sky rocket, then he's not only been incredibly low and deceitfully by using the fan grievances about our financial situation to shield his motivation, but also done it whilst attempting to bleed a hard hit club dry in the process....

If he doesn't sack Stretford for what would be a catastrophic advising error, then it looks suspiciously like a plan that worked out well.

I do however realise my feelings will probably subside because football is a fickle business where you're only as good (and as loyal) as your last game..But right now, I'm not particularly happy he's staying. I would've rather he left and dealt with the consequences of his actions rather than be rewarded with more money for them.

This sums up my sentiment exactly, as pissed as I am I doubt I will be angry forever, a couple of good performances and it will be forgotten. But one thing is for sure, at one point I thought Rooney would become a legend of the club like Giggs and Scholesy. After his antics the last few days, I highly doubt he will ever be considered in the same breath as those two

Would it be safe to say that the general united fan reaction will be...

We don't like you anymore Wayne but we'd like you even less if you'd gone to City.

From the club's point of view it was important not to lose Rooney after losing Ronaldo and Tevez. From the point of view of 'perception' if nothing else. But really Rooney won't mean nearly as much to us as fans anymore. Even if he won three CLs in a row he's tainted now as a money grabbing chav...

the support will come from the fact that he will put on a united shirt
but a cnut he is ..
his PR agents will try and spin in in all directions now .. doesnt matter what he says or does anymore

that statement he came out with was incredibly stupid .. what an arsehole

So what's the consensus, still a cnut or not?

Still very much a massive cnut but he'll be forgiven and all will be forgotten about this in a few years, just like Rio's antics have been. I remember people jumping down my neck for daring to suggest that Rio was a mercenary last year because I remembered what he had done with Kenyon and Co at Chelsea.

Likewise, I dont necessarily agree with you often but this is spot on.

So what's the consensus, still a cnut or not?

cnut - if what he said about his teammates was from his mouth no new deal will change that , maybe all this does is get the club more money when they ship him out. how can he go into the changing room now?

I wonder if the feelings on here are indicative of the wider United support.

Or will the same fickle feckers who boo'd Tevez's substitution against Arsenal the other year spend 90 minutes singing 'the white Pele' on Sunday?

Yep, but he's our cnut. The difference is though, most of the cnuts we've had in the past that we said that about have got their reputation for things they did against other clubs/players, not United itself.

Sadly this is true. Mind you truth be told Rio has some form in this area too. Footballers are getting less and less likable.
As one of Manchester's favorite sons put it....money changes everything.

I find it hard to get behind Rooney now. I think I shouldn't feel so abused though - that's modern football. But Rooney earns more in a year than I will earn in my life - it's so far detached from reality it's hard to maintain the love for the game any longer. Football was about the concept of club, of fans, but it's now about celebrity and television. It's not much different from being a pop star really. Sell records, sell shirts, sell image rights, sell your soul..........Sell, sell, sell. Money, money, money. Some footballers may have gone about negotiating a rise in a more discreet, more respectful way I suppose, but as I said before, I think generally footballers at the very top only care about themselves, their cars, their mansions, their women, their teammates. Rooney is really just another prime example of many.

I think this too. Though there will be a contingent of fans who will never forgive him and I couldn't argue against it either to be honest.

typical that one of the rare occasions where the majority on here dont want them to spend they do

To be honest, after the way he played it, I would really rather he was sold. I think they gave in to preserve his sell on value.

If he scores the winner in the following.....

The two City games
FA Cup Final
Champions League Final
Stamford Bridge
Anfield

I may forgive him

Nice to see some light-hearted humour in this thread. :D

I said that same thing here a few minutes ago, now that WOULD be a good signal for him to send right now.

I'd go so far to say that would be the ONLY signal to rekindle the old relationship with the fans. It would suggest that he actually made a mistake and that the situation simply got out of hand.

But I doubt it. It has worked out very nicely for him and his new statement is no apology whatsoever. This is a very sad day for football because it sends out a horrible message: Throw tantrums, hold your club to ransom and you'll get a nice pay rise.

If he continues to play the way he has been these last few months I can see the fans losing patience.

Why do I have an image of Malcolm Glazer sat at home crying his eyes out screaming

"THAT BASTARD JUST COST ME £50 MILLION"

:D

Ah well.. every cloud has a silver lining.

Agreed.

I hope he is sold in the summer at a higher fee than we might otherwise have got. That was an absolute disgrace and him being rewarded for it is just unbelievable. I'd rather Hernandez was in the team than Rooney.

Planned all along - Fergie killed two birds with one stone here: No one is talking about Rooney's private life any more = he can concentrate on the game again. And secondly, this is a statement about the affairs at United. "Mr. United" "I'm going to be here for the rest of my career like Giggs" goes from saying "No ambition or money at the club" (a common thought amongst fans) to "the gaffer and management has shown me why this club will continue to do greater things" = maybe we aren't in as bad of shape as the media makes out. Master stroke of PR greatness.
