If it was a tactic releasing that statement was extremely stupid or better to say it was poorly written, if it was a tactic all he had to say was "i am looking at all the options but i will like to thank United fans for all their support..." that way doesnt burn all the bridges he had. What he said questioned the intregity of the club, players and to a extent the manager and IMO after it United should have closed the door.
I mean even his interview with MUTV its almost like hes suggesting we had to convince him (the greatest player ever to grace our football club in his mind) to stay and it was the best for him. That ontop of his statement is extremely insulting

At the end of last season and before the world cup started United could have offered him a deal then but as its policy now to save a few quid they offered it him just as this season started to save paying him the new improved salary over the summer months when he is not actually playing for United.
Rooney and his agent played hard ball to extract the maximum amount possible from United. United knew Rooney was in a strong position on the back of last season form.

I know the Guardian have made mention of his wages being "up to £180,000" per week but do we have any solid evidence?

To me, one thing remains as a fact, that is he did requested to leave Manchester United as he had no faith in the club's quest for future successes. Little harsh, you don't know whats been said he may have been worried about the investment in the squad I don't know why people are saying its offensive to the existing squad, when alot of Utd fans have been saying the same things for a while now. Debt or no debt we have to spend now, what Rooney said was right. Not investing in the squad could cost us in terms of success on the pitch and the Glazers have been screwing us in this department since they got here. Would expect at least one big name to come in now probably to cover up them taking more money out to pay off some of their debt.

If we compare Rooney to Torres we have the heart of the problem.
I would argue that they have about the same ability and transfer value.
Torres is unhappy about playing for Liverpool at the moment yes, and is having to play with shit players. But has he started whoring himself out to other clubs, and demanding transfers? no he hasn't.
That's despite the fact that he could attract just as much money at another club as Rooney can.

If you've noticed, I think it's the rubbish he spewed to the press, undermining the manager and his team mates that really angered most people.

I agree, that was his mistake. He was badly advised by his agent. But that shouldn't be reason not to support him anymore.
