Right now,I doubt there's a better keeper in the EPL than Craig Gordon.
Perhaps Van der Saar, perhaps Cech ... the rest, wouldn't put them in the same category for various reasons ... Friedel I feel is still excellent, as is Howard on their days but they're just not getting to certain shots these days.
Too many people rating players based on what they think they know rather than what they actually see, and then again you need to know what you're looking for.

Well at least i'm not the only one. Although i wouldnt care if i was. I feel that time will change peoples opinions. All Gordon needs is the platform of a bigger stage.
Outside of scotland and all that stuff, for the national team he's our only World CLass player, he's that good for us. He's won sunderland games this season, their fans are hailing Roy Keane even NOW for signing him and that was for 9mil.
If he signed for United i could see all the panic and negativity at first but it'd soon turn around and you would be hailing him as the best in the league in no time.
As i say, time will tell, he's coming into his own now and will only get better still. Anyone comparing anyone outside of Cech or Reina to him arent paying much attention in my opinion.
He's definitely up there, I bumped this thread earlier in the season when he spent a short time on the bench saying that if was still there come January we could have had a bargain on our hands.
he was on the bench because he was back from injury. After the hammering from Newcastle he was back in and hasnt looked back. He is ideally suited to a big club in my opinion because he is very calm at all times.
And this is it in a nutshell ... a very very composed and assured keeper, and it is this that allows him to always keep his concentration levels right up there. He's not a 'busy' keeper like Hart, Reina, and Casillas. I think this busy-ness tends to impress a lot of folks but really these three are actually quite susceptible to poor decision-making and hence errors ... good keepers mind, especially the former two.
You can count the number of mistakes he's made for Sunderland in three years on one hand ... he really is very consistent, and some of his shot-stopping is RIGHT up there with the very best, ever.
He's be a steal at 12 mill.

Because if so I don't ever want to see you give an opinion on any player outside of the team you support.
I've seen enough of him this season and the last to know he's simply not good enough for United and as for his injury record that speaks for itself.
I think he's a very good goalkeeper and may get better with games but to say he's the best right now is simply wrong.

His injury record isn;t an issue. His arm was broken twice, not exactly his fault. Brave goalkeeping resulting in bad injuries. Before that he has been a very healthy keeper.
He's better than VDS. He'll prove it, wait and see. I really hope he goes to United. I wonder what your opinion would be if he did end up at United and proved to be as good as I and a few others think he is or know he is in my case.

I would say VDS is better for us, while Gordon is better for Sunderland. VDS is astonishingly good with his feet, which is needed for us who play the ball out from the back so regularly. Gordon is a better shot stopper, an ability that is more often needed at Sunderland.
Craig Gordon is about the same level as PIG. Don't know about the kicking though
You are comparing a keeper who has spent the last 5 or so seasons competing and excelling against the top oposition in the Champions league and who would be considered among the worlds best if people didn't discount him due to age, against a keeper who plays for Sunderland and hasn't except for certain key saves looked any better than one would expect of a mid table keeper.

Have you even seen VDS play, because judging by your assesment the answer must be no.
he's past his best now, he was a great signing, of that there is no doubt. But he's not the player he was for united anymore. He lacks the reactions now to be consider in the top bracket for me. Still a great keeper for a big team as he doesnt have too much to do with Vidic and co.

PIG has been a bomb scare so many times. Gordon has never ever been a bomb scare.

Fair enough, i'll have an element of bias but also i'm in a far better position to judge him than any United fan. I've watched him since his early days at hearts and watched him never be anything but outstanding for the national side. Which to be fair is not exactly an easy feat when you are scottish.
Well it would help, because then you could actually have an informed opinion about his abilities as a keeper rather than something based on what you've read from others on the internet.

His "injury record" as you put it was down to him doing his job. 2 broken arms is hardly injury prone.
I think VDS is a better shot stopper than some in here are giving him credit for.
He's a very good shot stopper, makes things look easy, but I would put him behind Gordon, Cech, Reina, Foster and Howard in the Premier league in that particular aspect in his goalkeeping.

Dudek looked like a quality shot stopper, shit positioning was the truth.
VDS is a country mile ahead of Gordon, Foster or Howard, in shot stopping and well.... everything.
When he "needs" to make a heroic save, there's no-one better:

VDS has fantastic positioning and I'm not including that in my definition of shot stopping. Perhaps its fair to, and if you do then yes VDS could well be better than all those I mentioned.
In terms of pure shot stopping I would still have the others, I'm sure you could make similar highlights reels concerning their saves.

That's my point, you could make longer highlights reels for them. Foster, Gordon and Howard make eye-catching saves that VDS just collects with good footwork and positioning.
Which makes him a better goal keeper I agree.
Foster and Howard are nothing like Gordon ... if anything Gordon is a younger, and potentially better version of VDS.

The fact is... Van der Sar is damn underrated. Perhaps even by our own supporters.
Everyone considers van der Sar for a damn good goalkeeper, but very few considers him as the best in the world. If Buffon is the one he was, he was the best, but everytime I see him, I just see that his back, has made him a worse goalkeeper than he was. At 40, van der Sar is as good as ever. I think van der Sar has been the best goalkeeper in the world the past couple of years. In our league treble from 07-09, we got some injury crisis in the defense all those years. 4-5-6 defenders out at the same time. It is a testament to van der Sar that we managed to win the leagues, even the Champions League despite have to use a reserve set up.
Regardless if van der Sar is the worlds number one or not, Gordon might be great, but I really doubt he'll be that great. And if you look at his Sunderland career all in all, there are some dissapointment there as well. Van der Sar has been flawless since he joined United, but then again one could not foresee that based on what he did for Fulham. Personally I hope van der Sar takes one more season after this one. That will give Lindegaard the chance to gain some experience and we will better know if we have to sign a world beater. If that happen, I bet Lindegaard might be a better goalkeeper than Gordon in a couple of years, because Lindegaard has talent.
Ohhh, I definitely rate Van der Sar but old father time has caught up with him, and I think he knows this, hence his plans to retire - I'd want to go out on top too.
Gordon is starting from a high platform to begin with, so if as FV mentioned he finally gets the stage (and the support) I suspect he'll push on and become an excellent keeper for a long time.
Anyway, I hope he does get that platform if nothing but personal reasons - the clue is in the colour.

The comparison to Vuc is a strange one though, i'm hardly one to big up scottish talent. I think he's the only world class scottish player and he's proved it to me countless times against top opposition. Without Gordon in goals scotland just arent the same team and Sunderland fans are seeing the same results this season.
yesiree ... don't see many games over this way unfortunately - some highlights when they're playing old firm. Not a fervent patriot just rate him as a very very good keeper.
I've kept an eye on Sunderland blogs and he's definitely won over the sceptics ... I suspect there would be a similar pattern on these blogs if he was to sign. Anyway, that's all in the future.

Serves as a reminder how important the keeper position is and how difficult replacing VDS is going to be.
I notice in these threads(maybe not this one so much but certainly others) there is a trend for distribution and ability to play abit with the ball at your feet has become some posters favourite criteria for replacing VDS. Not the priority for me. Whilst I would want United to get a keeper good at these areas the main thing for me is having a keeper who is reliable, has good command of the area and has real authority on dealing with the crossed ball who has the mental toughness needed for playing at United.
That's not going to be an easy find and one we cannot do on the cheap. If all we did this summer was spend big on the best keeper we could get I would be satisfied. It's to important a position to take chances with and you have to minimise the risks which could arise.

He was fecking dire today, not strong enough on balls coming into the box when he has someone coming at him. Arguably should have stopped all 3 Stoke goals but was definitely weak on the first 2.

I've kept a closer eye on Gordon (not just Stoke) after being involved in this thread a few weeks back.... I just don't see it. The Stoke game showed everything that is bad in his game.

Yeah but having a keeper with good distribution is vital to a side like ours. There are plenty of keepers out there who can do all of the above and play a little.
