Southampton v Manchester United

No mate - didn't really get going that idea.

Sure there'll be a few lads with flags down there but nothing major,

Looking forward to it non-the-less

This is a pretty hard game to pick a team. We can't underestimate them, or it could be another West Ham performance.

Defense could be: new goalie, Fabio, Brown, Smalling, Evans. That is very decent, but there's no leader in there, and if we're playing our new goalie he really could do with a Rio/Vidic in front of him at the start of his career.

Midfield... One of Gibson and Anderson and maybe Fletcher to give us some toughness. Both Bebe and Obertan could do with a game, but you can't play both these raw cnuts at once. We don't have much of a choice though, Giggs won't play and we should rest Nani for the Villa game.

Attack... Rooney could do with a goal and I pity poor Owen for playing so little, but Chicarito should definitely start if he's not going to play from the beginning against Villa. And there's very little creativity in Owen-Chicarito pairing. If we play these 2, Anderson should start.

It will be really interesting to see what team Fergie will pick.

I suspect this will be very very close to how it pans out.

We definitely don't want to be knocked out like Leeds and I'm sure SAF knows this.

Strong squad with a blend of youth.

IMO. he'd give the youth spots to Fabio, Evans and hopefully Obertan ( He needs games )

The rest would possibly be most of the first team with Giggs ( Again ) to come on if we need that goal.

Nani deserves a rest imo.

Anderson and Carrick in CM please with Scholes as well

I'd be surprised if the defence isn't Brown, O'Shea, Evans and Fabio. But I'm continuously proven wrong, so.

Yeah, I could see that with perhaps Neville and Smalling on the bench. They may squeeze in one of those if they put O'Shea (which given that Scholes and Giggs are being rested) and Carrick's injury isn't entirely impossible.

Given the lack of faith almost in wingers Obertan and Bébé recently a Fletcher-O'Shea-Gibson-Anderson wingless wonders formation isn't entirely out of the question either.

Defence: In terms of leadership there's Neville, O'Shea and Brown, not just Vidic. With two fullbacks out and after two assists last weekend O'Shea will be the first name on the teamsheet.

Midfield: Again without Giggs, resting Nani and Scholes you could play either Bébé and or Obertan, you could even play Rooney on the flank, in midfield you have Fletcher, Anderson, Gibson, maybe even O'Shea and Rooney in there if needed. In other words plenty of options.

Forwards: I can only assume Berbatov will be rested, I could see Rooney on the bench with Hérnandez starting and Owen starting too if it's a 4-4-2 instead of a 4-5-1. Bébé and Obertan would be able to provide forward cover, as could a reserve like Joshua King.

Park did not play against Uzbakistan, should be availbale for Villa on Tuseday.

I would like to see a Rooney-Hernandez duo start today with a somewhat competent midfield so they could get something.

I'll be there, but sat in the Southampton end trying to avoid over zealous stewards. I'm going for a 2 0 win for the lads courtesy of an Hernandez brace!

Prediction1-2 Chicharito, Fletcher
Can we have some more score predictions please. Want to see which folk have the knack of getting the correct score. Could be useful....

Southampton 0 - United 3. :)

Manchester United will get a glimpse of life after goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar for their trip to St Mary's as they deal with a defensive shortage. Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Van der Sar will not make the trip, although he is not injured, missing a game only two days after it was announced this will be the 40-year-old's final season. Recent signing Anders Lindegaard could make his debut, although no final decision has been made, and whichever goalkeeper does play will have to do so behind a makeshift defence, with Rio Ferdinand (groin), Patrice Evra (family bereavement), and Rafael da Silva (concussion) all out. Midfielder Michael Carrick is also doubtful with an ankle injury.

Serious lack of interest?

Nah I love the FA cup, also it's not often we get to watch utd on terrestrial nowadays.

........................Lindegaard.............................

Brown...........Evans..........Smalling............Fabio

...................Fletcher.....Anderson...................

Bebe............Hernandez...Rooney............Obertan

Is my prediction.

........................Lindegaard..........................

Should be released around 16:30.

Sorries, thought this was a 15.00 kick-off, isn't the OP suggesting that?

Edit: It doesn't, read the parenthesis as number 1 somehow.

I wonder if we'll see Fabio left wing, with Brown, Smalling, Evans and O'Shea at the back.

Guardian is predicting this

Southampton-001.jpg

Surely wont be that strong

Lindegaard

O'Shea
Smalling
Evans
Fabio

Nani
Gibson
Fletcher
Obertan

Hernandez
Owen

Kuszczak
Brown
Anderson
Bebe
Rooney

Is what I'd like to see, more than enough on the park, plenty of backup on the bench if we need it.

Last time a team similiar to this played we got pumped 4-0 at west ham so lets hope that isnt going to be the case.

I don't think that Guardian line-up is too far off. The only one I'd be surprised to see involved is Berbatov. I'd rather Vidic was rested, and a tough away cup tie like this might not be the best time to start a new keeper - I'd expect his first game to be at Old Trafford but we'll see if his training has made Fergie think otherwise. Part of me thinks we'll go 433 with Hernandez starting more out wide. Hernandez must have earned a start - Owen will at least come off the bench.

Does anybody have a link to some website where i can watch the game? (It is not aired on the Dutch sports channel Sport1 like all other PL games, and we dont have ITV in Holland)
