Marseille Vs Manchester United

Even at full strength Marseille is just not good and experienced enough to beat United in the CL.Just block Lucho and his clever passes and then a huge part of their gameplay is contained.
Their crowd is fantastic when things are fine but they can easily boo and whistle their players if things aren't going their way

Lucho has got a terrific eye for a pass, Fletcher should stick to him like glue.

I think I'll put my house on less than 3 goals being scored. This has 0-0, 0-1 written all over it.

Can i just say that i'll be at this game

Berbatov and Rooney will both start, Rooney will be on the left, and its not like this would be the first time where Rooney has played there

An away goal would be great, I'd expect a low scoring defensive game. 1-0 to us would be a bonus.

Yep, expect something like the Lille game in 2006/07.

Hope we get a cheap goal like we did then, Larsson scored the winner in his last game for United on an assist from Ronaldo it was juicy

''Olympique de Marseille will be without André-Pierre Gignac for their UEFA Champions League round of 16 opener against Manchester United FC next week after the striker injured his groin on Saturday''

Just took a look at their results in the group stage, Spartak Moscow actually won there 0-1 and they only managed a 1-0 win against lowely Zilina (ignore the away fixture)

I'm pretty sure we'll make this game look a lot harder than it should be

Marseille coach Deschamps insists they can shock Man Utd

Olympique Marseille coach Didier Deschamps is convinced they can upset Champions League opponents Manchester United.

Deschamps knows United are overwhelming favourites for their clash.

Then again, so were Real Madrid's Galacticos against his Monaco side in 2004, as were Chelsea in the semi-finals.

He told The Sun: "I believe we can beat them and knock them out. If I don't believe it how can I tell my players to believe they can do it?

"It's a massive ask for us because United's objective is not to beat us but to win the competition.

"United defend very well and have enormous talent but I've spotted some weaknesses at the back. I won't tell you them but we will not be content with just defending in the two matches.

"My Monaco beat Chelsea when nobody gave us a chance. That year we also beat Real Madrid and absolutely no one gave us a chance."

So should Manchester be afraid?

Deschamps laughed: "Ha ha. It's better for us if they are not afraid. It's better they come here certain they will qualify.

"Better they come to the Velodrome knowing it will be easy and calm - but that will not be the case. If United knock out Marseille it's normal. But what will be unforgettable is if Marseille eliminate United."

I reckon 451, Rooney up on his own, Nani and Giggs on the wings. Scholes and Fletcher in the centre, but can't think who will partner them. Anderson if we want a bit more drive in attack, Carrick if we want to go a bit more defensive.

Are Rio and Raf likely to be ok for the game?

Few injuries for Marseille - would be great to get this 'done and dusted' in the first leg given the Chelsea / Liverpool games coming up.

Must control the midfield - 3/5/1 with Fletcher on Lucho, Carrick and Scholes.

Hopefully a couple of second half goals from Nani and Rooney to take back to OT.

I just hope we don't play Ando as the attacking mid again, for my money he's much better starting from further back.

I'd like to go:

Park
Anderson Carrick

But with Park injured and Valencia still out I think we might see:

Berbatov
Rooney Giggs Nani
Anderson Carrick
Or swap either Carrick or Ando for Fletch.

I'd prefer Giggs on the left & Rooney tucked in behind Berba...surely that would work better?

Actually it would be great to see Scholesy tucked in, like the good old days...

I agree with both options, but I think SAF will play Rooney left.

it has to be a strong consideration - Fergie has to keep an eye on the away games at Chelsea and Liverpool coming up (as well as Wigan this weekend) and the fact we only have two fit senior wingers - he needs to look at resting both, but more particularly Giggs, when possible.

I reckon Giggs starts tomorrow (on the left) and is rested for the Wigan game this weekend.

Just seen that re King and Tunnicliffe, neither will make the final squad I'm sure but what a great experience for them.

Confirmed. No @rioferdy5, Giggs, Owen and Evans for #mufc in Marseille.

No idea pal.

Anderson also out, of course.

Looks like a pretty clear 451 now

vds

O'Shea/Rafael
Smalling
Vidic
Evra

Nani
Fletcher
Scholes
Carrick
Rooney

Berbatov

Van der Sar - Rafael, Brown, Vidic, Evra - Fletcher, Scholes, Carrick - Nani, Berbatov, Rooney?

fecking injuries...

I think Smalling for Brown.

Neither Rio nor Giggs traveling with the United squad for the game tomorrow, Owen also out. With Anderson also out, the team almost picks itself imo.

...........VDS

Raf..Smalling..Vidic..Evra

.Fletcher..Scholes..Carrick

Nani......Berbatov....Rooney

Kuszczak, O'Shea, Brown, Gibson, Hernandez, Fabio, Obertan.

That is my guess at the line up.

Reckon the team will be broadly similar to that for the Wigan game at the weekend too, but I could see O'Shea coming in for Scholes in the midfield, to give Scholes extra time to recover for the Chelsea/Liverpool games.

Tunnicliffe and King are in the traveling party.

You've got to think Gibson will start against Wigan...

If Giggsy and Ferdinand injuries are serious, we won't have many occasions to rest our players before Chewsea and Liverpool.

feck!

Not exactly a bad team, but could definitely do with Rio and Giggs back. I'm assuming Giggs just has a knock.

Depends on what Fergie wants from the midfielder coming in. O'Shea has done a very good job there previously as our DM, so Fergie might go that way again, with Carrick and Fletcher to do the 'attacking'. As I say, O'Shea coming in is an option, and with the lack of midfielders fit I would imagine it is something Fergie will consider, before he will look to players like Tunnicliffe anyway.

Travelling squad (according to official website):

Goalkeepers: Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Lindegaard;
Defenders: Vidic, O'Shea, Brown, Rafael, Fabio, Evra, Smalling;
Midfielders: Scholes, Gibson, Nani, Carrick, Fletcher, Bebe, Obertan, Tunnicliffe;
Strikers: Rooney, Berbatov, Hernandez, King.
