Wigan Athletic vs. Manchester United

Smalling a rest??????????

He hasn`t played so much this season to need a rest.

Well if Rio is coming back then it is no problem. But if he has another setback and with Evans out for another two weeks, it is going to be hard for Smalling to play four or five games in a row.

Isn't Evans meant to be back for Chelsea on Tuesday?

That Wigan away is not easier than Chelsea or Liverpool will be. I just can't imagine Evans - Brown, as you would like to see.

Of course Wigan away will be easier than Liverpool and Chelsea away, we still need to out our best team out there because we actually have a decent shot at winning there and should seize it if possible.

I think SAF needs to be smart when resting players in the next few games.
I'd say play our strongest team, without resting anyone for the likes of Gibson, Obertan or Bebe

Smalling is fine to play a few games in a row, for heavens sake he's 21! Aside from running back from the occasional corner-kick, he doesn't do a wealth of sprinting in that 90 minutes.

Seriously, I'd rather rest someone, if it couldn't be avoided, against Liverpool or Chelsea because those are games we probably won't win anyway, than against Wigan where we could possibly collect all three points if we stepped it up.

Interesting theory albeit a bit defensive, don't you reckon?

If we MUST rest, rest them at Chelsea. Liverpool is a must win for all sorts of reasons.

6 points in the next three games would be brilliant.

I agree, Liverpool is a winnable fixture, more so than Chelsea where I will be very happy with a draw given how we have played at Stamford and how bad we are away from home this season.

It might seem defensive but points are all that matters. If we go to Wigan with too many second choice players we probably won't win the game and 3 pts against Wigan are worth the same as 3 pts at Chelsea or Liverpool.

How is Liverpool more winnable than Chelsea? Chelsea are in rubbish form right now and are there for the taking more than Liverpool who've improved a bit recently and are solid defensively. A win at the DW and 2 draws from Chelsea and Liverpool wouldn't be bad. But we just HAVE TO win tomorrow.

Manchester United have won all 12 previous matches against Wigan, scoring 37 goals and conceding just four.

Hope this will calm the nerves somewhat...

This is a daunting prospect for Wigan. In 11 Premier League games and one League Cup tie against United, they have lost them all.

In those dozen games they have conceded 37 goals while scoring four.

In the last seven, all in the Premier League, they have conceded 21 and scored one.

And Wigan have won just one of their last nine Premier League games, the 4-3 thriller against Blackburn.

In the process they have scored just 27 goals in 28 games (only Birmingham have fewer, with 23).

They have won just five games all season, the joint fewest (with West Ham).

Only three of those wins have come at the DW Stadium where they have scored just 16 goals.

And Wigan have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 10 Premier League games.

Sure we have a great record against them but we're not great away from home this year so no it won't be easy.

We've won at Anfield quite a few times over the years, our last victory at Stamford was in 2003, we find it much harder to play there.

Some good memories of the JJB/DW Stadium over the years.

Away game.. that should rule out a convincing win
I'll take the points however they come

Reading all the Owen talk, could we be resting Berba/fatty for the next two games and start with Owen or Hernandez tomorrow?

Maybe Hernandez with Owen on the bench

Away game and Chelsea on Tuesday SAF will ring the changes, looks like another tepid disjointed away performance.

Defence and attack have pulled us through this season - looks like more of the same.

I love the optimistic supporting spirit of the match forum.

'looks like another tepid disjointed performance'? Based on what, exactly?

Have a feeling Hernandez will start this game as well as some other surprises. Something like:

VDS
Rafael Smalling Vidic O'Shea
Nani Carrick Fletcher Evra
Rooney Hernandez

I think it'll either be a close 2-1 or we'll trash them 4-0.

We won't lose. I'm so fecked now if we do.

I might of stumbled onto some team news for tomorrow's game earlier today...I saw none other than Ryan Giggs in Flannels in Manchester at about 4pm, what with us usually preparing overnight at a hotel before all home and away games, that'd suggest he's not playing tomorrow.

Bare in mind Wigan and Manchester are no more than about 20-25km apart though, it might not mean much or require a hotel stay beforehand; don't players usually meet on the morning of a home match anyway?

I suppose so, but at the same time, 4pm on the eve of a game is a bit late to be out shopping I'd have thought(especially as we always stay overnight at a hotel even for home games). I wouldn't be surprised if SAF has held him back for the Chelsea game, hence the spare time for a shopping spree. He certainly didn't look like a guy with a game on his mind with the amount of cash he was flashing

Gibson has to start this one, as I don't want him starting any of the next three fixtures
