Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Chelsea bought into the top 4, before them it was us, Liverpool, Arsenal and L**ds, now City are attempting to buy in too.

good point.

who do you think are the best supported clubs in England?
that would be more relevant than who are the top 4 at the end of the season.

I would guess

United
Liverpool
Arsenal

not sure if there are proper stats after those...

How is seeking to hold a player under contract dishonest?

In any case, new top-class players will be more willing to come to Spurs if Modric is still there than if he isn't.

According to Luka Modric, he had an agreement with Levy that if an offer came in from Chelsea, Levy would consider it. If Levy proceeds to reject the offer, refuses to enter into any negotiations, and punishes Modric for reacting to this, it would create a negative image of Tottenham for prospective signings. You say he doesn't like player power, it's a fine stance in principle, but the problem is that players like having power, and they won't want to go to a club where they have none and the chairman dominates everything.

He'd still be sellable for far more than the 16.5m paid for him.

And it would make the next player think twice before choosing to kick up a fuss. I reckon Levy now sees that as worth more to the club in the longer run. And he'd be right to make that assessment.

You can't be serious. When did it ever happen that the club, any club did that to their most valuable asset?

Even if THFC were that crazy to send their best player to reserves or boot cleaning duty as you put it, how's that supposed to make things better for you when you're desperate to get back into the CL?

As for sending the message, I'm not sure it'll have the effect you are after. The players that are already at Tottenham won't be happy that their key player is missing, and will think twice about sticking with the club that shits on its promises(I'm sure the other players look at this situation from the player's point oif view, right or wrong).

Modric is turning 26 this summer. Unlike Bale, he can't wait another two-three years to make that big move and his transfer value will probably never be as high as it is now. He also knows that there's no guarantee that a serious injury/loss of form won't prevent him from joining a CL club and getting his big payday in the future.

In short, if Spurs insist on keeping Modric against his will, it'll be a Pyrrhic victory. The player will be bitter and unhappy and his value will never be the same if and when you decide to cash in on him.

You shirked the bet I proposed to you.

You said it would take a bid upwards of £50m for Spurs to sell.

I bet you £20 if Spurs sell, it won't be for £50m or over.
Your bet will quite likely give a void result because if he isn't sold then the bet falls.

Whereas my offer is bound to yield a result either way: either he's sold or he isn't.

So thanks, but no thanks.

Laugh all you want, you're in denial.
Today Levy has said:

"In respect of Luka Modric, we are not prepared to sell, at any price, to Chelsea Football Club or any other club.

"We made our stance on this issue abundantly clear in writing to Chelsea. They chose to ignore it and then subsequently made the offer public.

"For the avoidance of any doubt, let me reiterate that we shall not enter into any negotiations whatsoever, with any Club, regarding Luka.

"We now consider this matter closed."

Yet you believe that Modric is in "advanced stage" talks with Chelsea? Get a grip, FFS.

Spurs.

A decaying stadium.

Their best player wants to leave for a 'big club' who happen to be Chelsea (i.e. not really that big a club at all).

A taste of CL football that has been snatched away, and looks unlikely to return for a very long time.

But Levy is doing a great job apparently.

With every quote on the player like that, his fee goes up a couple of million, I admire Tottenham for not allowing themselves to be bullied, but Modric's head is turned, who's to say he won't throw his toys out of the pram should he not get his move? Admitidly he does'nt seem that kind of character, but we don't know how far he's willing to push for a move.

First off, you mean "according to Luka Modric according to the Daily Mail".

Second, even it were true, an agreement to "consider" any incoming bid does not mean an agreement to accept it or enter in negotiations about it.

Wise up, the two things are not mutually exclusive.

Chelsea reportedly made their interest in Modric known last summer so it's perfectly logical that he's been in regular contact with them via his agent ever since then.

Levy is just waiting until he has a replacement lined up before agreeing to Modric leaving,if he were to sell Modric for say 35 million then any subsequent replacement would cost more as Harrys pockets would be full of cash (not the first time) as soon as Spurs get Marin or whoever they are going to replace Modric with they will cave in and accept a £32.5 million bid from Chelski.

It's true, the Telegraph also reporting it. Apparently the interview was given to Jason Burt also.

Btw Harry Redknapp is due to come to talksport to talk about this whole thing.

Edit: Here's a part of it

Harry Redknapp; 'If we are ambitious, we can win the league in a few years.' #Spurs

So Arry saying it's Levy's decision as to whether they sell him or not and not anything to do with Arry

He's a chelsea player then :(

The year we broke into the top four we spent no money at all, our sole signing was Enrique De Lucas on loan.

Yesterday, Glaston, I was a fantasist in your eyes for saying Luka was for sale and that all lines coming out of your club indicate this. Today, Levy does this, drawing more attention to the matter, blatantly winning over the mind-forged manacle'd fans like yourself who are to blinkered to believe he has a price, this window right now. The worst thing about it is, the injection of reality is a cruel one, I agree, yet you seem so quick to say everyone else is living in fantasy land.

The fact is, Tottenham fans should be very happy as of late the team has done very well, has won lots of plaudits for exciting football and has on the whole been a great export of English football last season.

Yet the reality is, a reality you need to accept, is that this is not the norm for Tottenham, this is for all purposes, an ananomly for the club. Spurs players are and always will be 'gettable' for the bigger clubs, who, whether or not you want to believe it do actually exist.

You'd have thought Klinsmann leaving after two seasons or so, Sheringham leaving for you and going back again when you no longer needed him, Sol Campbell running down his contract to go to Arsenal, Carrick leaving for you, Berbatov leaving for you, Keane leaving for Liverpool and then returning when it turned out they made a mistake, and stupidly allowing the sales of Defoe to Portsmouth and Bent to Sunderland.

Though obviously it hasn't got through to him.

Add Modric to that list, and next summer add Bale. This is what I'm saying, Glaston makes it out like we're all mad or deluded.

He has dreams of granduer like all fans, except most fans realise they are exactly that, dreams.

Talksport: 'Can you keep a player that wants to play somewhere else?'

Redknapp: 'It's difficult'.
So, Levy says NO.

The fans love Levy for that.

Modric insists on leaving.

Levy is forced to sell.

The fans now hate Modric.

Levy makes a mint, buys a couple more players, keeps some cash back.

Redknapp's happy because he has now been able to buy the players he wanted.

Fans delighted and love Levy even more, fans hate Modric more than ever.

Hmm, I can see where Levy's coming from here.

So Levy says that he won't be sold "at any price, to Chelsea Football Club or any other club", but you bizarrely translate this into a sales pitch.

:wenger:

:wenger:

Do you realise that it's simply the most desperate and public flogging exercise a chairman can take to raise the price and hope for a bidding auction for the player by making every team in the country, feck, in Europe aware that Chelsea have moved for him.

I reckon you're slightly deranged, it's lucky the Spurs shirt is white so people don't see your dribble all over it.

Yes well that's where you'd have remained if you were lucky :) - but clearly the money has made a difference. It's now a pig with lipstick.

:wenger:

I find it very interesting how you are always so staunch in your opinions, do you really believe you can put your faith entirely in statements at face value? Do you believe there is zero chance of Redknapp demanding a larger transfer budget than he'll otherwise get? Levy being machiavellian in his interviews? Tottenham fans wanting Modric gone after what he said today? An unexpected hit on your club finances, new stadium, debts etc. that requires urgent liquidity?

My view is the same as yesterday, I can very easily see Modric leaving but there are so many variables it is impossible to determine what will happen, or indeed with any potential transfer this summer.

I'm sorry if it irks you that your CM midfield is looking a bit tired and jaded these days.

But Chelski won't be getting Modric.

Has this got through to you yet? Or are you still hoping against hope?

Literally you've just spat that all over your monitor haven't you?

So where's Modric most likely destination? United or Chelsea?

On the surface of it, Chelsea. We may be quietly doing stuff in the background, but if we had made a bid I'd imagine we'd know about it as I think Chelsea's bid was leaked by Spurs sources, so I'd imagine they would have leaked ours too if we had made one.

Seems we are not interested, or are yet to make any move if we are.

And for what it's worth I think if Chelsea want him badly enough they will get him eventually (unless Modric refuses to go there, which doesn't seem likely based on his interview). They may not spend the way they used to, but they still have loads of cash and if they really want him they can bid anything for him. If Chelsea are keen enough and Spurs hold firm they can eventually expect a ridiculous sum that even Daniel Levy would feel he had to accept.
