Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Madness.

The price will be exhorbitant but I fear SAF will dig his heels in and we will get taken to the cleaners on the price for a player who isn't even in the top bracket of midfielders.

We have to spend wisely.

We've spent wisely last few years, so if SAF wants to spend a bit unwisely on a player, who if he meets expectations, that would really add to our our CM for the next several years.

I hope we at least test Spurs resolve by lodging a 30-35 mil bid if he is one of SAFs biggest targets this summer.

If we spent that much I imagine the club would see that as our spending done for the next few years.

I think it plugs the gaps in the squad nicely and yes you're probably right.

A bumper summer was always pending given the likely departures of Scholes, Neville, Giggs, Van Der Sar, Hargreaves.

We won't need any significant overhaul in the next couple of years as GK and defence will be set for 5 years plus. The old guard in Giggs and Scholes are replaced (if that's ever possible) by Young and Modric. Up front we're set for a good few years - even if Owen and Berba go in next Summer, Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck and potentially Young isn't a bad front line.

The youngsters will be a year closer to stepping up to being 4th/5th choice strikers too.

I agree, don't SAF and Gill know that we're skint?!

Surelyif he meets expectations then it can hardly be considered "unwise"

Things have gone pretty quit on the Modric front. I wonder if the new manager at Chelsea wants him or prefers to bring in somebody else, like João Moutinho?

If Modric or Sneijder came in, they'd be on higher wages than Scholes or Neville were. Young will probably be on a similar amount.

No idea what Young'll be on...we'd be guessing. Actually come to think of it I don't think we'll be getting Modric or Sneijder, I think Jones, De Gae and Young will our three big signings for this summer(assuming De Gae will actually sign). Spending £80m net would go against the grain.

Well, we will have 6/7 players less on our wage bill: Scholes, Neville, Hargreaves, Van Der Sar, And 2 or 3 of Sheasy, Gibson & Brown.

Replaced by Jones, a Goal keeper & Young. I think we'd be on the same wage level or lesser even if we signed either Modric or Sneijder.

EDIT: With Amos our 3rd keeper, even Kusczacks wages will be opened up.

No concrete moves for either Modric or Sneijder seem to be in the media.

Don't think we're after Modric tbh - we'll get fleeced and there are better available

I suspect those players were on high wages. But yeah, I'm sure it'll factor into our spending - for all we know it may have already.

PIG is cheap. Haven't you got a Polish cleaner??

I really don't think wages would be a problem. That said, we really won't end up paying crazy amounts for Modric. I can see us signing an upcoming midfielder for 20 million than splashing 40 for Modric or Sneijder.

Hargreaves, Scholes, Neville and van der Sar were probably all on 80k each. Brown and O'Shea are probably in 50k each and Gibson on 20k.

That's about 440k a week, or 23m a year.

Jones is max on 50k, Young on 100k, De Gea probably on 50k. That's 10m+ a year.

Scholes never had a high contract from what I know....considering he never hired staff for his "brand", no agent, no lawyers, did it all himself. So clearly Modric or Sneijder, and well Young will all be on more money than he was....I'd hazard to guess that they'd be on about the same amount that he and Neville took home combined.

No way will De Gea be on £50k a week, first choice keeper at Man Utd is going to be 70-80k at least.

I don't understand why people say Modric isn't worth 35m or what not and it'd be daft to pay that price.

I mean seriously, who else is there that we can actually go and buy who'd fit in instantly and be exactly what we need? Sneijder?

feck all others I can think of who'd be worth 35m as much as Modric is.

We're doing pretty well for value this summer. Young for 16m when Henderson cost Liverpool 20m.

I think Modric is worth 25m in a reasonable world. I rate him in the same bracket as Silva. However, when you add Levy Tax it'll be at least 35m. But if that's what it takes then we have to pay it.

Would prefer to sign someone like M'Vila however.

If Torres is worth £50m, Rooney was touted to Madrid for £60m before xmas, then Modric is worth £40m.

I don't think it works like that. Just because one player is worth a certain sum, does not make another player worth around the same amount.

sick of buying from spurs. i hope we never do business with them but i fear we will be giving them 70 million over the next 2-3 seasons for modric and bale.

I highly doubt we would sign another winger in Bale unless we sell one of Nani/Valencia, which I don't see happening.

So how do you value players exactly? Number of vowels in the surname?

All three are proven internationals, had reasonable length of time left on their contract, wanted out and belong to teams reluctant to sell, all around the same age. This means the relative fee is determined by the need of the buying club, the ability of the player and the strength of the selling club.

Spurs are in a weaker position than we were when Rooney wanted to leave, Modric isn't as good, the only thing that Spurs have going for them is that there are two teams desperate to sign him, which means the fee would be lower than the ones demanded by Torres or Rooney, but not less than half. £35m for someone at their peak like Modric really isn't massive given the circumstances when we paid £32m for Berbatov when he was older and less vital to Spurs.

Really? So what about:

* A 5 year contract
* No need to sell in financial terms
* A line in the sand drawn by Levy in the most public terms possible.

You say: "£35m for someone at their peak like Modric really isn't massive".

I say: 35m? Jog on.

Keep Modric when he wants to leave... See how he performs then...

Spurs will be very likely be the biggest losers if they keep a player who wants to leave. United sold Ronaldo. Arsenal will sell Fabregas. If those clubs understand that players will go were they wish, a club like Spurs should do the same.

Still you'll have Levy's pride...
