2017 Pre Season | Vålerenga vs Manchester United

Pre season but looked like a lot of games last season.....backed defence and we had no width or creativity to break them done. The only difference is the normally go up the other end to score against us with 5 mins to go....

Sick of seeing these number tens play wide. So boring to watch.

Imagine if we had a winger that could do all that for the goal on his own. Beat the fullback, get to the byline and put in a decent cross. Pretty sure we've had a lot of success with that type of player.

That 45 minutes of football was a carbon copy of many of our halves last season. Nothing has changed unfortunately.

Lesson learned in first half : Width and crosses are the way to score goals in modern football. Get a player on flanks who can cross ffs.
That has been the trick over the years and Fergie knew it best, we always had width and excellent crossers of the ball on both sides. It wins you games and titles.

Perisic?

Yes!!!! That's it!

Runs into channels! It's non-existent. No full back runs into inside channels, or forward runs into the same.

And people will tell you we don't need Perisic! It's like they don't see our 'wide' players allergies to actually getting chalk on their boots and making runs ahead of the ball. How did we go from Giggs and Kanchelskis to this..?

We are looking really poor in attack. Mata and Mkhitaryan are supposed to be the main creators but both of them are struggling badly to show some creativity. With no wingers and no fullbacks who can attack on the pitch everything has to come from the middle of the pitch but we don't have good enough players to play that game.

Same type of slow attacking football. We are just not very creative going forward. Defense look good though. I feel this is a typical PL game for us against a mid- table/bottom half team. We are going to need to improve our penetration for this season to end well in the league. Right now we play like a 5th 6th best team in the PL like we did last season.

I do feel we have very good central defensive options now, but apart from Valencia we really have no attacking threat down the wings. Blind and Darmian don't offer any attacking penetration. An attacking left back and a top winger would be so great for us. Sad we haven't got that yet and doubt we will get much more than max 1 central midfielder and maybe a winger.

Mkhi and mata on the wings don't work.

Blind and Darmian as fullbacks are too limited and cautious.

We end up having nobody running in behind and rashford is completely isolated.

All jokes aside perisic would really give us better options than those 2.

Pretty clear that creativity is still an issue for the team. Great cross by Mkhi despite him being terrible pretty much the whole half. Pogba was easily our best player. Rashford didn't offer much as a target, either along the ground or in the air. His movement has been poor. Good practice game. We'll see loads of games like this throughout the season.

We will keep finding it difficult to break up defensive teams as long as we stay without any attacking options from our fullbacks.

Impressive is definitely not a word I would use for Mata in this first half. He's a square peg in a round hole on that right hand side.

I'd honestly swap Mata and Mkhi at this point for two fairly average left and right wingers.

He's not, though. Not with the way he's being played. I mean, he's hardly being asked to keep the width, get to the byline and whip crosses in. He, along with Mkhitaryan, are playing as roaming wingers. Popping up in pockets of space and trying to create.

The width is a big problem, but with Valencia and an attacking left back, that would be sorted.

Buy Perisic and Aurier, we could push Valencia to the wing at times if we need more width. Perisic and Shaw, Aurier +Mkhi/Valencia should provide plenty of width

All that money spent and crosses to Fellaini are still our best tactic.

Also only watched bits but saw Daley Blind too slow to reach the ball passed in front of him 3 times.

The thing is, for all people talk about our cams playing on the wings, they should still be capable of putting in crosses. Mkhi just showed he can cross the ball well. Pogba has put in good crosses too. Nobody is connecting with them though. Our wingers also simply don't try them enough. Strange thing, not sure why we're so intent on playing the ball through the centre.

Valencia pushed forward now would offer nothing of what we need on the wings.

What are you saying? If we don't win this game then we should panic?

It's all about West Ham in two weeks. This evening means nothing.

Remember our games in pre season under Van Gaal? We thought we had a tactical genius after beating Real and Liverpool. Then the season started.

Pre season means nothing.

Panicking won't help.
But you cannot use the "this is only pre-season, we will improve" line.
We are only 12 days away from our first league game and we need to be showing some form now.
We are playing LVG type football right now.

Did you watch how Madrid played a few days ago, in their first game of pre-season. They ran themselves ragged.

This reminds me of the game against Wigan we played at the start of last pre-season. Even taking into account that it's a training game, we look lethargic up front. There is simply not enough movement or quick passing to create openings in a very packed midfield.

Blind plays an efficient game on the left but he doesn't have the speed to beat men and his delivery simply isn't good enough. Darmian looks a bit more engaged than last season but he won't cut it on the attack, either.

It really cooks my goose how Rashford is being used up front. We either lob the ball to him and hope he can bring it down (often against CBs who are bigger than him) or we play it to him in wide areas where's he left isolated with no one to pass the ball to. If Jose doesn't implement some kind of quick interplay between our forwards that can maximize the skill of players like Rashford, Martial, and Mkhitaryan, we will struggle for goals just like last season. A quality FB signing will also be a must.

There's a guy talking sense on MUTV, said "Man Utd is not Everton, to be successful here, your first touch needs to be there, the technique and vision need to be there, Fellaini is only comfortable when United play "the fellaini way" but United shouldn't be playing the "fellaini way", you need to win midfield battles with creativity etc"

Won't help matters.

Lukaku is a shithouse battering ram who was bought to bully these types of matches in the final third. The quality and variety of service will be a huge question mark still.

Because these CAMs lack any natural instinct of being wingers and can't stick on the flank. They're used to play inside so they do it by nature.

We need proper wingers and good attacking full backs.

Funnily enough we could learn a thing or two from that Fulham 2-2 game under Moyes. The team just doesn't attempt many crosses (not to that extreme) which seems a waste considering how big the players are.

Christ. Will Bojan and Quinton shut up about Pogba.

MUTV have definitely not been told to hype up Paul Pogba.
