It's not a city state. Morocco doesn't sound all that different to me, just poorer. India and China have many of the problems people have had with Russia and Qatar. I haven't been to either of those countries, mind.

It is basically one city. It has gas, a base for a US fleet, a load of modern buildings and..that’s about it. Any comparison with rich cultures like Morocco, Russia, China or India suggests you’ve never been to any of those places.

Yeah, there's one specific element that might not be total shambles if they decide to do it. Totally worth the culumative shit show that this world cup brings.
We only had to plow through the lives of a few thousand workers, to get to the point where they'll actually have the infrastructure capable of hosting the world cup, which will entirely useless straight after it, anyway.
Well, that and present the bid as a summer world cup, completed with Sci-fi AC equiped stadiums, that apparently have no basis in reality and then, subsequently, once we figure out that's actually impossible and players might have a problem with playing in a 50 degrees Celsius heat, move the event to the winter, while simultaneously creating an organisational nightmare for every top level league, that will span over 3 years, at least.
But it's fine because people might be allowed to drink and touch each other and not be persecuted over their sexuality in a physically limited space.

Can't really predict what happens on the pitch. All you can just hope for is that football is good. But a world cup is much more than just the football.

I have been to Doha and I believe it is against the law of the country and their beliefs to have people drinking on the streets - which they definitely would not change for the sake of world cup. It was just some thing which came to my mind about the colony but hey who knows. It is in 2022 and we have 4 years to crib, whine and vent our anger on the venue.

I actually think the best players will actually finally enter the World Cup in peak physical and mental condition seeing as though it's less than half way into the season but the obvious negatives are lack of summer football and it will really affect the intensity of the first half of the season and the quality of the latter stages of the seasons.

Fair comment on the physical and mental aspects of the players. And it also makes the first part of the season a bit tricky as most players would not want to get injured.
Being in the 'winter' season the temperatures will be quite bearable around 23-27 degrees in the day time and drop to 20-23 in the night.

It’s a legacy of Blatter’s rotten regime and was obtained with bribes. As a “tourist” destination, there is very little to recommend the place and it is not somewhere people will discover in the same way many came back pleasantly surprised by Russia. Even if you deem it time to hold it in an Islamic country, then there are a lot better choices than a rentier economy in the desert built on slave labour with links to sponsoring terrorism. People will still go (they would probably go to N Korea such is the allure of the World Cup) but that’s not really tbe point.
It’s intersting to see different peoples views on that World Cup. I thought it was the worst one I’ve ever seen. Maybe because England weren’t there so I spent the tournament cheering Eire.... I was young and foolish then though!
Isn't normal travel to Qatar rather expensive in the first place? My perception is a place that only the rich go to vacation, but maybe I'm wrong. It's not a place I'd consider to go to 'party', but maybe the other nearby countries will get a bit of overflow.
The whole idea of having a large, extended sporting event anywhere in that region really boggles the mind. Besides the heat, there are the religious-based restrictions, plus who knows whether any sectarian violence rears its ugly head.
Concerning the footy, are any leagues suspending play for the duration? I guess it'd be like when the ANC was played in Jan/Feb, but much more widespread, with bigger teams being affected much more, since they are more likely to have national team players. Or will the bigger leagues just move their winter break, or even start the season earlier & end later?
They are currently blockading Qatar so not as things stand.
Every other summer, we have a tournament to fill the void of the league season ending. With the World Cup in the winter, it means we'll have 3 summers in a row with no football! Feck off FIFA, crap decision

Just got back from Qatar. The culture is misogynistic and repressive, wasn't nice at all.
But the transport links, accommodation and stadiums will be excellent, they have infinite money and a lot of cheap workers.

There used to be increasing money in football and big transfers, until oil money came and changed the game completely.
There used to be increasing bribery and using influence and political pressure to get a bid for WC accepted. Until Qatar and took it to a complete new level of s**thousery. Look at how Trump openly threatened that there will be political repercussions if countries didn't endorse the 2026 bid.
I don't endorse what Qatar did or do, but I am not going to lose my sleep over it. I don't expect FIFA or the WCs to have some kind of moral benchmark.
Ignoring moral questions is completely fair. But you're still left with a non footballing country, shite atmosphere and a fecked up schedule.
This is something similar to the argument for Russia WC. I am pretty sure Qatar intends to make this a good PR exercise. Will probably take enough steps to ensure that the whole thing goes peacefully.

With it being held in November until December how would it affect that season for club teams? Will it be postponed for a month? Will it carry on like mls and other smaller leagues ? Does anyone have any idea ?
OK. I will probably sit out WC 2022 (having been to Russia this time round) and don’t look forward back home to warm June nights outside being replaced by miserable November nights but we’ll see how it goes. Would you plan to go?
As a last word on the matter, I do recommend Morocco - along with Lebanon, it’s the best place in N Africa/M East. The Gulf on the other hand (having worked there for a year)....
It's easy for Putin to control the hooligans because they respect him and the government know who the hooligans are and where they live. Qatar is a different proposition. Will they be able to stop extremists? They could be anybody. They could come from a neighbouring middle east country and pretend to be tourists. I have a bad feeling about this.
It will still feck up the leagues for two seasons though. It is in a country where essentially slaves are building the stadiums and infrastructure and most likely, it has a high chance of terrorist attacks.
Comparing Qatar with Russia is crazy. One is a city with half a million people and Islamist laws, the other is one of the world's superpowers with 130m+ people and one of the richest histories a country has. And while Russia aren't a giant in football World, they have still some traditions and history there while teams in Qatar's first leagues are essentially followed by a couple of hundreds of fans.

Not comparing Russia and Qatar, on culture or football. People had apprehensions about Russia, safety and homosexuality and what not. But Russia did not allow any bad PR issue.
The WC is more or less going to be concentrated around Doha. I think Qatar's monarchy should be able to control and protect such a place.

No, Doha is not a place where terrorist attacks happen regularly. However, Qatar next to Saudi Arabia is the biggest sponsor of terrorism in the world, and is an extremely small country located in the most unstable region on the world. With hundreds of thousand of people entering for the World Cup, it will be a logistic nightmare for such a small country to keep unwanted people out.
I watched a program saying over 100 men would lose their lives building those stadiums! Is that what the beautiful game has become!
