I don't think the formation was the problem. The fullbacks just played too deep and weren't making good runs. The fullbacks staying out wide did nothing to help stretch the play because Cambridge defenders didn't have to commit to them. There were a couple of times where Januzaj or Di Maria were facing the goal with about 12 total players on the edge of the box with no fullback making any runs.

I don't blame Januzaj or Di Maria for passing back at times. There were no good options.
 
The fact so many people on here were suggesting we were still playing 3-5-2 and not the diamond kind of highlights how similar the 2 formations are, it basically boils down to how far up the pitch Carrick was playing in comparison to the defenders. As we were basically camped inside their half the difference were basically non existent. The abuse of the infamous 3-5-2 seemed to have disappeared completely, turns out it had feck all to do with the system...
