Hernandez spent most of last season on the keeper's toes at corners. It's an important job but he's not likely to get too many goals there.
Evra won't be for long if he doesn't wake up and smell the coffee....
Tevez gets plenty from there. Hernandez will get his share too

Ronaldo was a beast at corners. We had the same corner takers i.e. Nani and Giggs but scored a lot more when Ronaldo was in the team.

Our corners and free-kicks have been shite for the last two seasons. And by shite, I mean the delivery, not the outcome.
No matter who's trying to get on the end of them, our set-pieces will be significantly improved with this signing. To be fair to Rooney, he's improved a lot when it comes to central free-kicks but when it comes to frees in wide areas and corners, Young will be a great addition.
He's a good winger, Nani is a great winger, if he can just get consistent on the left Young wouldn't even get a look in.
If people are looking forward to Young as a dramatic improvement on our set pieces I can see them being very disappointed.

I dont know why people are so sure we're signing him as a back up player. I think he'll start a hell of a lot of games, big games too.
IMO is is a good thing if the corner's delivery is quick. You lose the element of surprise if it is high and lofty. Those are the type of corners we have been putting in. Young puts in a mean zippy corner. Defenders don't have time to react and our chances of even scoring a scrappy one increases. So this is where I see our improvement coming in.

If his free-kicks are as bad as you imply and he's averaging 15 or so assists a season, trying to pick out donkeys like Heskey and Carew, then he must be able to whip in a sensational fecking cross in open play.
I'm looking forward to Young, he's a good player and having 3 quick wingers is something I've been wanting for a while, especially one that plays on the left to unlock Nani on the right. He'll start 30+ games a season as well which is excellent, he wont be "first-choice" but that's because we rotate a lot.
I just don't think his freekicks and corners are the part of his game we should be getting excited about, especially when he's going to be aiming at the Borrowers we have up front instead of all the 6 footers Villa have... he'll be an improvement on what we currently have set-piece wise but he isn't going to be David Beckham like some people are making out.
He's good at set-pieces consistenly, something we don't have, so its a definite improvement in that regard.
I'd say it's a bit of both, to be honest. Between )7-09 we had similar corner takers but scored a fair few from set pieces, but we had two of the best aerial threats in the league in Vidic and Ronaldo, while Brown was a regular and he was pretty handy too. Over the last 2 seasons it's been clear that our delivery, from corners in particular, is poor. But the demise of Brown and the loss of Ronaldo probably plays a part in that. Other than Vidic, we lack any real offensive aerial threat.
I realise that the World Club Cup isn't exactly the defensive benchmark but one moment sticks in my mind when we played Japanese team. We had a corner, they doubled up on Ronaldo with their two best set piece defenders and Vidic beat his slightly weaker marker to score. That's obviously an extreme example but it bears contrasts with what we see now, where teams can minimise Vidic's threat without having detrimental effects elsewhere.
People need to read this and realize how correct it is, the fact is, put a decent player around fantastic players and watch the improvement.
I can think of many ways to use Young - imo he is one of the best counter-attack players in the P.L. It could be fun to line up Young, Hernandez and Valencia with Rooney, Carrick and Fletcher in midfield (Rooney as an attacking midfielder)
That front-line would be nice in away-matches - they can outrun any team!
Definately. If he can put in the kind of delivery he does at Villa, set pieces or otherwise, he'll get shedloads of assists for a club like United.
Brown? How many goals has he scored? I don't remember him as particularly threatning in the air, even without any connection to actual goal scoring.
We may not be the most threatning teams in aerial threat, but we've good enough to be better. Whatever we miss in the air we have on the ground, so I'm fine with that, but our delievery over the last couple of years has been so consistently poor - laughable even - that it shouldn't be that hard to improve. It's easy, cheap goals, and we should have them.

Yeah, it's definitely a bit of both.
Smalling loves to attack the ball, though, as does Jones. Hernandez has got a terrific spring for a short arse and we all know how clever his movement is. So hopefully the improved delivery we can expect from Young will coincide with better options in the box.

) Nani's provided a few good crosses in, Remember that Owen goal very clearly (Can't remember what team it was though, Bolton maybe ) but Nani isn't bad at crosses... Its his free kicks that have been quite poor and hasn't been looking like he'd score.
Rooney has had more of a chance but I think A.Young might be a bit better than the 2, but there's no doubt A.Young will bring in more quality from both our deliveries and our set plays...

Sir Alex know what he's doing. In Ashley we'll have finally a quality English winger that is capable of creating more chances for strikers. His Premiership record is solid.

Yeah he is a good player but he is not the answer to all our problems. He is not going to improve our team dramatically so we can compete with Barca.
So basically Sanchez/Modric/Sneijder is that ?
We won't be playing Barca everyday and our problem against Barca were tactical ones and not to mention Fletcher catching a virus.

Everything correct - my point is that we have good squad players already. What we need now is players that really improve us big time and can make the difference in games like the CL finale. Just dont see Young as such a player
Most of our players our squad players, so if one calls Young a 'squad player' it's not an insult and it doesn't mean he won't have a big part to play.
We need to improve on midfield, we know that, but we can't let Barcelona turn into an obsession. There are other parts of the team that needed work on, and having another winger to make sure we are always strong on what is a very essential part of our play, where we need quick, technical players who can cross the ball and score the odd goal, is important.
Maybe people are a little apprehensive because we haven't bought a midfielder yet. If we got one first and then Young, he'd be considered a good signing. But let's not judge that until the transfer window is closed. Judge Young for what he is only.
Would Young improve our chances of winning the league and progress in Europe? I'd say it's a definite YES. I'm sure we'd have had a few extra points with him around last season. That makes him a good signing.
Nani was really good with his set piece crossing in his first season. Not so much afterwards. He does deliever the odd good one, and when he does you can see that we can threaten in the air, but all in all, most our set pieces have been mediocre at best, with quite a few howlers.
Apologies but I really can't be fecked to read 75 pages of this thread but is his contract close to expiring? £15/17 million seems a great price.
