It is a risk on his potential , but it is a risk the scouts and more importantly Ole himself feels worth taking , rare to hear Ole talk up a young player so much especially as you say he has played so little senior football anywhere never mind been completely new to the premiership.

I don't think we will see a lot of him this year in the first team , would be expecting a lot of a experienced player to slot into the premiership mid season(Bruno is an exception) and make a big contribution straight off, never mind a kid who has so little experience in any senior football.
 
Once he and Pellistri were signed, it became clear that the Sancho door has well and truly shut. Excited by these youngsters. Onward and upward!

Ronaldo was a once in a generation player. You can't expect other youngsters to go onto become the best player in the World.

This is a "punt" signing, which means that he may go onto be decent in a few years or he may not.
Dalot is a very good example of this strategy.
Pellistri is also another example.
Will Amad be good enough to play for our senior team and actually get picked? IMO, not for a few years.

But anyway, good luck to him.
 
His goals/assists in the 19/20 season. Gets quite a few assists with his weaker foot too which is good to see.

Not at 18 he wasn't. Ronaldo was basically just another hot prospect at 18 who many felt needed a loan.

We spent half of what Sancho was quoted for, for 2 right hand side players. Leave the other youngsters out, this one should be ready next season. I still don't know why Sancho is still in the frame, possibly some journalist pretending nothing has happened.

We spent around 28 million for both players.

Your talking as if Ronaldo came and started putting in world class performances in his very first season. He was obviously very talented, but wasn’t even the best player in our team until his 3rd or 4th season.

Ronaldo was also a punt. I’m sure on the day he was signed most people would have swapped him for Ronaldinho
 
Maybe I'm dreaming but for some reason have a feeling he'll have a positive impact on our season

I dont remember it that way at all. I remember he was the most exciting player I had seen at Utd since Best. I never thought he needed a loan, I dont recall "manny" thinking that either.

Nope, Ronaldo was not a punt at all. He was absolutely without a doubt an incredibly talented youngster and that was very clear to anyone with a brain on his debut. He wasnt the finished article but nobody is at 18 however he was clearly going to be a big player.

He was a punt. There are no guarantees in football. He’s talent was obvious. Also no one expected him to become a 30-50 goals a season player.

He looked like he could become a world class winger.

People forget that in his first 2 seasons he was not a week in week out starter. He was also very wasteful with his final ball .
Then in his 3-4 season the complaint about him was that he didn’t do it in big matches.

Then in his 5 and 6 season he exploded and become best in the world.

Anyone with a brain can understand that’s the nature of players and no different should be expected from Diallo.

I recall he is the most exciting youngster I’ve ever watched. Our players actually all wants Fergie to sign him up after a preseason friendly against Sporting. During his first 1-2 years at the club, George Best the man himself literally said it’s first time he feel it’s compliment to him when people refer Ronaldo as new George Best.

Nobody forgets he wasnt a week in week starter in his first 2 seasons he was a kid and had a long way to go. He was absolutely not a punt. There are some players who appear once a generation who are always going to be special, Ronaldo was one of them. That was clear on his ability with the ball, his first touch, his ability with either foot etc, he was outstanding. What was missing was experience. He was no Punt, thats just silly. Anyone with a brain knew he wasnt a Punt.

How do you know Diallo isn’t a once in a generation talent who with time and patience will also become world class in a few years time?
 
I just wonder if this signing would have been announced on Fri had we actually won on Weds night, we all know how our Utd PR works after a bad result so definitely something to consider

Ogden's probably bitter about being demoted to ESPN. He got lucky (which he self admitted) about SAF's retirement and has been riding on that ever since. He's just not a good journalist. Castles just like to wind people up and Luckhurst writes like a fan forum poster.

Do you really believe that 2 kids with barely 20 first team games between them would kill Sancho's deal off? I very much doubt it. There are 3 reasons why we didn't sign Sancho.

A- Greenwood is doing so well at RW and in a league that doesn't make the likes of Havertz, Mkhitaryan and Kagawa look like Ronaldo or Messi
B- Sancho was too expensive
C- We need the money to invest in other positions.

Loving the direction and stance the club is taking on the transfer side. A big feck off to all those clubs that jacks up prices and put a manutd premium.
We should go for good prospects but not being held ransom anymore. Feck dortmund. Feck sancho

Gotta say, I saw it that way too. All the publicity surrounding our link to Sancho, then two youngsters (not cheap ones either) that can play in the same position were snapped up. Made sense to me that the Sancho deal, for the time being at least, was dead. Rightly so at that price.

You obviously missed Giggs then, who actually was the most exciting player to be seen at United, since Best.

Not saying Ronaldo wasn't exciting, he was, but the most exciting since Giggs.

No. Sorry if you watched him I’m astounded because to me and everyone else right from his debut it was clear that he was truly, next level, astonishingly talented. I cannot remember ever being more excited by seeing a young player on the pitch.

I didn't think he needed a loan either but after his poor showing against Wolves, fans and even some pundits said he should be sent on loan. Lou Macari on MUTV said he was too raw to be trusted in the first team and expected him to be loaned in January.

I'd agree with this. His debut was amazing, he was such a different player from all the ones that have been playing under SAF since then.
However no one can say with honesty they expected him to develop the way he did.

Diallo had played just 5 first team games with Atalanta while Pellistri had never played in Europe. These kids can be considered reserve players level at best. Sancho on the other hand would had been at least an 90m-100m signing. No manager in football history can afford to spend that much on a player only to immediately send him to the bench. The investors would rip his heart off his living body. Therefore these players are in totally different circles at the moment. It would be like saying that we're not signing Mbappe because we've just signed Mcneill.

As said in the previous post what fecked the Sancho deal was a mix between Dortmund being too greedy and Greenwood being too good to send to the bench. That dictated our strategy which also included opting for very promising reserve level players instead of the final product. Ultimately we can only have 11 players on the pitch, which means that if we buy Sancho then someone between Rashford, Greenwood and Martial would have found his arse on the bench. That won't happen with Diallo and Pellistri at least for the time being.

In my opinion we'll only going to buy Sancho IF Martial doesn't score enough goals, Greenwood ends up moving as STK and ends up winning a first team role and Diallo/Pellistri aren't ready for first team football. Even then, the club might opt for someone cheaper and more effective like Haaland and then move Greenwood back as RW.

I'm talking about the Ronaldo before he signed for us. According to Phil Thompson the then Liverpool assistant, Ronaldo was being offered around the big clubs in Europe by Mendes and they were quoted a 4m fee which they didn't take up. The player at SCP that was the most hyped was Ricardo Quaresma who Barca wasted no time in signing which suited us because had they wanted Ronaldo he would've signed for them too.

I wasn’t disagreeing with your post at all, just agreeing with the other poster and stating that I saw the Sancho deal as dead. These two were a more sensible option at the time due to Greenwood’s development as you said.

I’d move on from Sancho for the time being, and even if AM carried on his poor form, Sancho isn’t the obvious replacement, a proper CF would be where my money went.

I watched Ronaldo in the toulon tournament in the summer of 2003 when he won the player of the tournament and he was hardly known in England. But i'm talking about the Ronaldo before he signed for us and that Ronaldo was a hot prospect that big clubs turned down.

it would need a serious readjustment from Dortmund (with their expectation of transfer fee) for us to go near him again. I don’t think they will ever get an offer as big as we offered from us or anyone else in the next 18 months at least.
