very encouraging...but until we have overwhelming voter protection...the law needs to stand. the fact the Republican party actively suppresses minority voters is proof the Voting rights act needs to be Strengthened...not weakened.
Scalia will not live forever. The Dems need to keep winning the Presidential elections and slowly weed him and his ilk out.
More than likely the current court make up will be the same. You could lose 2 justices during Obamas term but both are more Liberal judges, Ginsburg at 79 and Breyer at 74 maybe. I'd think both Scalia 77 and Kennedy 76 will stay on until they die or a Republican is elected. Then after that Thomas might be looking to go. If the Dems win the next election and as of right now I'd think they will, the court will swing 5-4 Dem appointees.
In reality I wish there was a better way of appointing Supreme Court justices. I wish there was some litmus test for impartiality. The continual votes along party lines is unfortunate.
This may be one of those odd four year terms where Obama gets to make 3 supreme court picks. I would imagine Ginsburg is going to retire soon, but so too will Kennedy, which would effectively make it 5-4 Dems. If Scalia goes as well, a lot of controversial laws will be turned over.

The Roberts decision re the health care act can be interpreted as such. It is not the role of the Supreme court to make laws.

Kind of what I was saying but I can't see any of the conservative judges hanging it up right now. They'll have to drag old Scalias dead body out of his chambers. Breyer could go and Ginsburg certainly will. I think both Kennedy and Scalia wait until after the next election. If Hilary gets elected there we'll be looking at 6-3 or even a 7-2 court.

You don't tax yourself into prosperity, it's a tool to redistribute wealth more fairly and pay for central services.

Having lived in a third world country for half my life I will happily tell you feck right off if you think that infrastructure, education and safety nets are shit in the EU. Don't know about America never having been there.

This person has loads of mortgages totalling $4m - fine, are the repayments coming out on time? If they are, that person is managing their debt and 'balancing their budget'.

Fully agree. But generally on this board it's sacrilege to say something like that about a Democrat or liberal. I think the number of actual federal level elected officials that actually care about issues is probably less than 20%, just my opinion.

I believe that handing guns over, by the ATF, mind you, began under the Bush administration, and is no way comparable to Reagan sneaking around and sabotaging Carter's negotiations with Iran, and then turning around and selling them missiles behind everybody's back. The Republican obstruction thing is just not holding water like it used too either. They are being a big pain in his ass but it's become the nature of politics over the last 2 decades (admittedly made worse under Obama by Repubs). And he's had the Senate and they get nothing done either. When Reid doesn't like a bill he doesn't bring to a floor vote. No difference in practice than what the Repubs are doing in the House.
And now given his ramp up on Iran and NK coupled with his policy of drones in the middle east he might be MORE hawkish than Bush on foreign policy.
