Bringing on Modric for Khedira when we had 11 men would've made a huge difference as well, Khedira had all the space in the world but couldn't do anything with it. Modric would've been able to use that space much better.
No. Khedira was doing nothing with the ball because we weren't letting him. Welbeck was doing a very good job keeping him and Alonso quiet with incessant harrying. Modric in comparison came on to a pitch with loads of space to operate.

I don't think Welbeck left Alonso at all except to break forward. Every time Khedira got the ball he had acres of space in front of him. It doesn't really matter though so I'll accept defeat, I suppose. I don't even remember why we started talking about it anymore and it clearly has nothing to do with Anderson.

The thread just got side tracked with midfielder talk. That's all.. .

I agree with you gza, our plan was to let Khedira have the ball but stop Alonso. Was working too.

soon been with us for six years, he's averaging 27 appearances a season with a total of nine goals.

we are not the club for him, time to move him on.

Agreed. For his own benefit, Ando needs to move on to a club that better suits his aspirations. It's just not happening for him with United.

Solid squad player for us -- nothing more, really -- but Ando should be starting for Vasco de Gama or some other such futebol club.

Played pretty well yesterday without sparkling. He did the basics very well; passing was good and he made some nice forward runs. His defending was good also - perhaps he still can function as a CM, eh?

I thought he was pretty poor yesterday myself, along with pretty much everyone, but he is just back from injury so lets give him a chance.

I thought the few times Reading bothered to attack us we looked stupidly porous in the middle of the park. They passed it through Giggs and Anderson a couple of times so easily it was absurd. That move where he passes it to the centre back and then follows the ball until he's a couple of yards from the player he just passed it to is unbelievably stupid.

Agreed, I think that's his way of showing desire but it's so incredibly dumb. I don't understand why Rio doesn't tell him to just stop it.

I really don't see his future here. He'll never be a good squad player because of injuries, fitness, lack of development and it looks like he'll never be first choice. It's not often we spend big on a young player and then fail to make it work but I think he's the first.

As likeable as he is, he's a squad player and easily replaceable.

Aye and that's a problem in itself really isn't it. I mean he was bought for £20m and was voted best young player in Europe (an award won by Messi, Aguero, Fabregas etc) his current status just sums his development and time at United for me.

another of those easy stories in the Mirror today, about how apparently he'll be moved on in the summer.
you know the story that's been around for about 4 years now, and will probably be around each transfer window until he does go!

cannot believe he's still 24!

I think you are way too harsh - he moved the ball around the pitch very well. It didn't take a mastermind to figure out that any team would be able to play through our midfield with two attacking CMs in Giggs and Ando. However, they retained possession well, moved the ball well and both offer some decisive forward passes; unfortunately, Rooney seems almost unable to receive any of them these days (not saying he had a bad game, but his first touch can be atrocious at times)

agree. Anderson had a very good game imo. If he had played with Carrick, he would have been more effective.

Exactly! Cleverley would have done no better - probably worse since Ando has much more bodystrength that he uses with great effect to shield the ball, retain the ball and carry the ball. His passing was good and he made some nice offensive runs - I wish he had done more of that, but seeing that there was no Carrick to shield the defense that could have been a liability.

I think he put in a "wise" shift - playing it simple, which most people were asking for, and he did that well.

I think he'll be off this summer. Injuries, dubious fitness (he's like a Dad going back on the pitch thinking he's Gazza in the last 15 mins of a match) and the inability to really stake a claim for a midfield birth after six years surely will have tested Fergie's patience to the limit. Back to Portugal for the weather and bad dancing for me.

...but....he's been a really fun character and have enjoyed his time with us because of it.

Anderson isn't going anywhere.

That said, it's about time we all accepted what he is at this club. A squad player. He'll never be anything more. Not because he isn't talented enough but general inconsistancy in his game and repeatedly breaking down with injuries (the former probably being linked to the latter) has made it that way.

I sincerely hope we invest in midfield this Summer. It would be nice to go up against the likes of Real Madrid and play our own game rather than set up to stifle them. We can't do that at the minute because our midfield isn't good enough.

You need squad players too!

With Scholes retiring and Fletcher not likely to be back I don't think shipping out another player from our midfield would be a great idea.

Powell's coming through (if we don't loan him out) and Kagawa will be there. Maybe we'll invest in a big-name midfielder but either way, I don't think Anderson will rise above his current level. I watched the U21 game against Wolves earlier this week and even in that game he was struggling a bit. We ought to free up a squad number for a player who can remain fit and score goals from midfield. As much as I like him, Ando doesn't fit the bill.

A good squad player should be reliable, fit, relatively injury free and upto speed so they can just be thrown in. Anderson is the very opposite of a good squad player. In my mind he either starts or we let him go.

In terms of the bolded part I think we're fine in that area are we not? Especially considering Scholes will be retiring.

Spot on, brwned. The idea that you just run straight at the player you've just passed it to you is indeed unbelievably stupid. Most of Ando's passes lead to nothing, although you can see he's got an accurate, strong pass in his locker. Not much more, but he can hit a straight bullet at a teammate 20 yards away.

What an incredible shame he never developed his game under Fergie's watch. Sure, we could keep him on the squad for another season, but footballers his age enter into 4-5 year contracts. Does anyone here seriously suggest we sign him up for another 4-5 seasons? I don't think so.

 Scholes does alot of that too to be fair.

Where is he upto contract wise?

Kagawa isn't a CM and powell while talented has a lot still to prove in the first team before we should be looking at him as the answer and letting other squad players go. We then have what Carrick, cleverely and potentially Jones left along with giggs who will be a year older and likely to retire the year after and scholes who hasn't confirmed if he will play on next season. There is fletcher, but we can't rely on him at all due to illness.

We need to keep anderson for another season at least purely from a numbers perspective and bring in more bodies for the center. Not let CM go right now.

I've defended Anderson for a long time and was really excited in his first season with us but I don't see it anymore.

You cannot put Scholes and Ando in the same sentence, except by way of contrast.

That's bollox. They're both centre mids, that play for Man Utd, that do that exact thing.

They do completely different things in CM for Manchester United. Do Possebon or Gibson deserve to be in the same sentence as Scholes?

Honestly I think if he was at a europa league club in the premier league, we wouldnt be wanting to sign him.

Scholes may be the better player, but you can compare them. Ando does a lot of the things that scholes does as tactically we train him to. They both do many things the same on the park, but they also do plenty of different things as well. No harm in pointing out those things.

If Anderson was at another club he'd still be the attacking midfielder we signed. Not this center midfielder we are still trying to develop.
