Anderson

J'accuse Anderson!

It is with astonishment that I see he turned up to pre-season looking like Neville Southall!

Think of the best midfielder's in the world: Fabregas, Keane, Zidane, Sneijder, Iniesta, Xavi. It is inconceivable that these guys would turn up at pre-season so overweight that they cannot train - much less stake their claim for a place vacated by someone who had the position you regard as yours.

In the meantime all respect I had for this guy has gone!

What a massive load of bollocks that was. Some photos of Anderson training yesterday:

He's the only player in the photos with a monitor on so they are obvioulsy keeping more of an eye on his fitness than the other players, but the Neville Southall comparison is ridiculous. He's no fatter than any of our other players.

Doesnt matter how fat he is, hes still very fast and his work rate was fantastic for a good hour or so

exactly. The problem isn't how his body looks, it's the fact that he only has enough gas in his tank for 60 minutes. After that you can tell he's huffing and puffing which is why SAF rarely lets him go a full 90.

That's the real issue with Anderson. He doesn't seem to have the stamina to maintain 90 minutes of high octane football. Now that wouldn't be a problem if he was 30...but he's not. So really there shouldn't be any excuses.

has he put on weight?

thought he looked the same.

played well too. if he stays injury free, I expect him to play regularly.

Sorry - but he's clearly come back overweight!

Summer on the caf, where the level of conversation sinks to non-existent player weight issues...oh what fun!

So your job at the amusement park where you guess people's weight is what tells you that he has clearly come in overweight in those pics?

Yes - that and the fact that SAF pointed it out in his press conference!:boring:

So he came back of his vacation a bit out of shape, SAF also said they've worked that out. So it's only on the back of a few unflattering pics from a game you said you didn't watch where he performed well with little signs of tiredness in the first pre-season game.

he never really looks 100% fit,if we ever get him there he will be some player,I hope.

We should be grateful he's a fatty. Probably some extra padding in that car crash.

No - when he's in shape I can go with the fact that this is his natural weight. He is quick, he can turn he has a good touch, instinct, he can dribble past players etc. at that weight.

As I say I AM a fan of his.

But he could help himself - is all I'm saying!

One thing I do hope to see from Anderson this season is him lasting the full 90minutes the way Fletcher, Giggs and Carrick do and not fading after the 60 minute mark. He's been given massive allowances and explanations over the years for this, due to his youth and injury problem, although they are valid issues.

This year though if he can stay fit through pre-season I would be expecting this issue to finally be resolved otherwise he's never going to be the player everyone hopes he will be and in all honesty it should be a basic requirements of all professional footballers.

He is not as big as those picture depict.

I think this new kit will not look nice on him. His belly is not that "rollly".

To be fair to him he nailed that in the 2nd half of last season.

I feel he paced himself over the first 30 minutes a lot better and after the first 30 minutes observed and then started to take control of games.

I don't know if a lot of you have seen the MUTV program on Carrington or not, but with the kind of technology we have available to us there is no way anyone can be out of shape and get away with it.

If Anderson was consistently out of shape throughout the season and not putting in the effort then he'd be out of the club by now.

He wasn't having any problem with stamina towards the latter parts of last season which is how I'll judge that part of his game as of now.

I disagree that Anderson showed he had nailed that issue of stamina and condition in the second half of the season. It certainly was not the consensus on the Caf and I think it's wrong. Don't think it was his fault as he had niggling injuries which dogged him and the Giggs/Carrick combination made him back up along with Scholes and Gibson.

Anderson started 7 of United's final 22 games. He completed the full 90 minutes in three of those. He was subbed at half time against Crawley, 10 minutes into the second half against Arsenal and with 20 minutes to go against Fulham and Newcastle. He completed the 90 against Schalke at home, Blackpool at home and the Everton league game. I have no idea how anyone could conclude from this that he solved his issues with stamina and conditioning in the second half of the season.

The Everton game is the only seriously competitive game where he lasted the full 90 minutes and that was after a long period of not starting games for the club. The Schalke game was over in 20 minutes and Blackpool was a dead rubber match. It's still something he has not shown for United in his career to date. I don't think he had a run of starts towards the end of last season in all honesty to test the matter out due to his injuries and the form of others.

This was an issue when he got his good run of starts in November and December so this is still on-going and did not end in 2009 as anyone who has followed these debates would be fully aware.

I'm hoping this season, his first with United during pre-season, is going to be one where that becomes a dead issue.

Learning to pace himself, pick and choose his moments better is where I've seen him mature over the last season. As others have said, there are systems in place at United that would tell SAF and Co. if Anderson wasn't fit enough. I doubt SAF goes into games knowing that Ando can't complete more than 60 min a game.

I think it would be very difficult for any player to achieve fitness/stamina to play 5-6 consecutive games at the pace Ando tended to start some games at. But, he doesn't need to play at that tempo for the entire game and as seems to be getting better with that, he also seems to be doing better at completing games.

Blind faith but, I believe he'll start the season on a high for us and as long as he stays injury free, we'll see an Anderson that complete more 90 minute games for us this season. Goes to the rest of the squad as well but, also hope that he also finds a way to vastly improve on his away performances - if he does that, we are going to be in great shape - new CM or not.

We're still very much overrelying on him having a great season if we don't buy a CM, and while that's always possible, he's still 23 and has been injury prone, so it's a very, very big risk that shouldn't be taken.

Meh, what's with the 'he eats too many pies' stories. He's Brazilian, only Brits like pies. Pies are dull and aren't even nice.
