Scary money for some young kid most of us have never even heard of. It does seem a bit like desperation but lets face is desperate is how I would describe us right now.
Got to be honest i'd be pretty disappointed, the expectations on him would be huge it isn't really what we need right now a young kid.

Agüero was already one of La Liga's best players when he came to City, it was similar to Torres to Liverpool. Martial didn't even feature in half of Monaco's games last season, he was far from being the best player in what is a far weaker league.
It's got no chance of being like the Aguero to City deal. More like when Aguero moved from Independiente to Atletico perhaps.

I have watched him quite a lot since his Lyon days, with the France youngsters and with Monaco, and I can't deny him his huge talent. He is still very much a raw product though, not even close to Agüero's or Torres' level when they came here. He's better than Wilson at the moment, sure, but he is just a bit above Januzaj's level imo, if above at all. He needs time to develop his game, just as much as Januzaj does. We struggle to develop Januzaj, I can't fathom why we would spend £m40ish for a similar, slightly better young player. If we end up paying more for Martial than Chelsea did for Pedro, it would be a disgrace.

Not really - Aguero was one of the best players in La Liga before he moved to City, and was already one of the faces of Nike. Signing Martial would be similar to when we signed Pogba from Le Havre, or when Pescara signed Quintero. Young, unproven, hugely talented and is tipped as the next [insert great player from 15 years ago].
Edit: Just saw the other posts. Never mind. Indeed, he does have the potential to be world-class. I don't really agree with the 'new Henry' tag, his style is not exactly the same, but he is tipped to be the next best forward in French football.
I mean that more like, he has the potential to be world class eventually. Won't come and tear up the league right away, but will do so eventually if he fulfills his potential.
Shouldn't be surprising though given they were both 23 when they moved here. Martial's 19.
Thanks for that. It is certainly a good record albeit at age level games. From then on, He was prolific in French U16, 17 and 18 but then haven't been as prolific in U21 and at Monaco either (based on wikipedia). It may have to do with not being a starter though. I don't know about his minutes per game but he has 0.21 goals per game last season, which for 18 year old is decent.
Looking at that clip, he seems to be direct with his running and beating of defenders. I hope he has the right attitude to improve which he need to if he joins here. But 50 million for potential, that's a lot.
I haven't seen Martial play and must concede I'd barely heard of him until his name got mentioned in a link with Arsenal a few weeks ago. Certainly seems a huge talent though and one I'd rather not see end up at a rival Premier League club, regardless of the price. I was much happier with the Austin rumours
Indeed he is. That's why it's a shocking fee to me. He isn't halfway towards being a proven top-level player. I don't trust "genius" french youngsters, they usually don't have the work ethic to succeed abroad. Let him at least prove himself over a full season before spending millions of pounds on him. We could be spending a record-breaking fee on a new Obertan.
(I know he is far more talented than Obertan ever was, but trust me, beware!)
In fairness, Martial doesn't seem to have the head of an alien.

I'm still not sold on Rooney, I'm pretty sure he'll hit at least another great patch of form. Anyway, for that kind of money we could get Higuain, Kane, Lacazette. Icardi is more or less as good as Martial, and he would cost half the price.
Did people think us signing Rooney was an act of desperation or a panic buy at the end of the 04 transfer window or is this just people looking for yet another excuse for pessimism? Sometimes as with Rooney the clubs hand gets forced slightly by interest from other clubs and they decide to sign a player earlier than they wanted to or they fail to sign other targets and decide to bring their plans forward. Everyone who has seen a lot of him agrees that he has huge potential. He scored the same number of league goals last season as Rooney did in his last season at Everton despite the fact that he played a lot of his football on the wing and a lot less minutes than Rooney did. Obviously Rooney was brilliant at the Euros and obviously the French League isn't at the same level as the Premiership but its not a particularly high scoring league. He only really started getting games as the main striker around March last year and between then and the end of the season scored 8 goals in 11 starts and 2 sub games. Martial is a player who has been scouted by United since he was 13/14 and who has shown huge potential for Lyon, Monaco and the French under age sides and has just been called up to the senior side and yet because a lot of people haven't seen much of him they decide he must be a panic buy and act as if he's someone who the club saw have a decent game or two and decided feck it lets just throw money at him whereas he's probably been scouted more extensively than a lot of other players we've signed. Obviously its huge money for potential and could go wrong but if he does get anywhere close to reaching his full potential it will be more than worth the money.
Monaco are going to absolutely murderlize us on this deal no matter what and for a player who is very talented but is going to take time to even fully develop while getting used to a new league. Long term I think he'd be a good buy but the way we have went about this is just bizarre and he wont immediately solve anything.

Very. Some very reliable journalists are saying United have offered vast sums of money.
I don't think that is what people are thinking, it's more to do with the fact the price is crazily high for a kid with half a season at senior level and unlike with Rooney he is not coming into a side already well stocked, he'd be coming in with expectation in a team struggling to form a decent attack, and in a team desperate for goals he's an unknown quantity at such a price. I am not against the signing and think long term it will be seen as a great bit of business, but peoples reservations over it are not invalid.
I'd expect another Pogba situation but we have so little in attack, he would be a starter.

Rooney was the best attacking prospect in the world, had played for England in his teens, he was far better than Martial is right now. There is no Rooney right now, him and Cristiano were unique talents. Martial, Januzaj, Jesé, are great but nowhere near. I don't follow the Bundesliga though, and there seems to be quite a handful of great prospects there.

Martial is far better than Austin or Berahino. Still not worth that much though, but I'd rather we threw that money towards him than them.

Well, Hazard was a lot more established when he made the move. Hazard was Ligue 1 Player of the Year in his last two seasons there. Martial isn't even close to that status atm (although younger too).
As for Lucas, he was overpriced but I think he was a more well known young player too at the time.

That Manchester United side Rooney joined had a lot of the same problems the current side has. In the first 4 matches that season United picked up 5 in 4 and scored three goals. And would eventually end the season with only 58 goals.
You could definitely compare it to the Lucas deal. Hazard was the best player in Ligue 1 and had been a huge reason Lile won the title when Chelsea bought him.

Yup. Many people probably forget just how average we were in attack in 2004-05. We had Bellion(!) and Smith as forwards at start of season. The goals came at premium in league and I remember often wondering that season before the match that how the hell are we going to score? Except few matches here and there, lack of goals was theme throughout the season. In March we had a run Palace (A) 0-0, Fulham (H)1-0, Blackburn (H) 0-0, Norwich (A) 0-2, Everton (A) 0-1. That's 1 goal in 5 games with 5 points and look at the opposition! After that match came the Newcastle home game where we again went behind and Rooney scored THAT volley at hour mark. We had gone around 400 premier league minutes without goal in between that goal and Fulham home goal.
Rooney and Ronaldo were the hopes then otherwise it was quite gloomy. 2005-06 then got somewhat better and then...

Was thinking the same. We are surely in the big guns territory for so much money... And that is not even mentioning that we are signing an unproven youngster who might never reach his full potential. Go all out for Lacazette if we are signing a striker from France for 60 million.
Not to mention this guy reminds me of Welbeck for some reason
