I really hope that there's no effort made to rush him back from injury to 1st team duties this season. We can cope well enough without him to win the prem at the very least. I hate to see guys getting brought back before their ready and playing injured. It really sets them back so badly and we have a small history of doing this.

The Liverpool game will come to soon for him i'm sure. I'd say he's got a good chance of gettin a runout against Marseille on 15th March if we're in a comfortable position with 20 or so minutes to go

I think some of you guys are failing to understand the situation. The guy hasn't kicked a ball for 4 months. He still hasn't kicked a ball properly now.... He ain't playing 1st team football for at least another 4 weeks.

when is he back, we need him back soon to provide more cover for Nani and Giggs.

Just had a quick butchers at the old thread from the transfer forum when we were being linked with Tonio, and some of the comments are quite funny, especially when we consider how much we miss the guy at the moment:

he's the new Morten Gamst Pedersen, who half of the people on here wanted us to sign as well a couple years ago based on some good performances against us.

I'd be disappointed if we sign him.

I'd much rather stick with what we've got and what we have coming in the form of Tosic and Ljajic who can play on on the wing as well.

No to Valencia.

I can't remember the last time I was disappointed with a transfer, as I'm a sucker for transfers, but I really would be disappointed to see Valencia arrive.

Thought he looked average. Would rather give Tosic, James, Petrucci or Ljajic more chances...
He is, with good skills in dribbling, nothing more

To be fair, from what I saw last night he's no better than Aaron Lennon.

after a story about Madrid making a bid for him:

Get in! I hope he doesn't make his way to Manchester!

dont see what anyone sees in him!

A bit miffed at our interest...

I seriously hope we do not get him..

Valencia is a decent player, but not first team United quality.

Urgh, please don't be true. The guy's little more than a mildly flashy, horribly over-rated typical Latin player.

fecking Valencia, I still dont understand our interest in him

To be fair there were people on the other side of the debate, saying he'd be a good signing etc, but naysayers make me chuckle :)

United first team quality was a fair bit higher back then to be fair, and it's not ridiculous to say he's not better than Lennon. He's a good player, not an exceptional one, I don't see the point in digging up old quotes which slightly under-rate him.

The current Valencia would have been a great player to have in any of the United teams of the last 5 years.

Some more than others, admittedly.

Nah, he'd have been a useful squad player, but he wouldn't have got into the team in 2006/07, and playing him in 2007/08 or 2008/09 would have necessitated playing Ronaldo out of position, something I doubt we'd have done. He was far from being a great player even last season, he was pretty good and above most people's expectations, but he wasn't great by any stretch.

he was the 2nd best winger in the league last season (after Malouda), how is that not top class?

Digging up old quotes is no fun without names.

The thread's locked so I had to C+P rather than normal multi-quoting, and I couldn't be arsed adding names in.

I agree.

Wayne Rooney begs to differ.

Valencia was the best winger in the league last season potentially. Team of the year and incredible amount of assists.

We'd have more points if he was fit. Guarenteed.

We've missed him a lot. Rooney and probably berbatov have missed him a lot. He gives the strikers near perfect balls, hence his large assists stat, and chips in with quite a few goals for a winger. He's been missed. We would have been a lot more lethal this season had he and nani been on our wings at the same time.

That's debatable, if he was really great then he wouldn't have been dropped from the team for a massive game such as the one against Arsenal at the Emirates. He had a good first half of the season but he tailed off rather dramatically at the end, Nani being far better than him in our own team.

Wayne Rooney begs to differ.

Maybe we have differing definitions of the term great? When I talk about greatness I think of people like Henry, Ronaldo, Villa, Ferdinand, Nesta, people at that level of performance. Valencia had a good season overall, but it wasn't great by my personal definition of it.

It's really not when you look at his stats. He was only dropped because Nani had hit a blistering run of form and SAF finally saw the player he could be so took a risk and kept him in the team.

To make as big an impact as he did in his first season at the club is pretty fan-fecking-tastic. I think he's a top notch out and out winger which there aren't a lot of these days and as such most left backs just couldn't cope with the lad.

It's frustrating that he got injured this year, I could see him being even better but the only saving grace has been the brilliance of Nani.

Guardiola mentioned he does not know why people underate Pedro so much. They asked Pedro the same question and his response was that whilst Messi and Villa like to make play centrally he feels he has a duty to stay out wide and open spaces up in the central area os alot of his work goes unnoticed.

When we have Valencia he does more often stay wide which opens space in between the centre halves and fullbacks for our forwards to run into.

Aye. Is Valencia a GREAT footballer? No, I probably won't put him in that bracket. But he's quality, and his abilities well match what we need. For US he's great.

Aye, if it's not Berbatov, it's Fletcher, if it's not Fletcher - then it's O'shea, if not O'shea - then it's Gibson, if it's not Gibson - then it's Carrick.....Bebe......Obertan....oh how could I forget Park.......Neville.......struggling to think if I missed anyone? Caf?

Point being, for a team top fo the log, QF of the UCL, our own fans seem to think we're really shit. Nothing wrong with criticism I agree, but things could be far worse than still being in the running for a treble aye?

You missed out Evans, Rooney (when he's not scoring), Nani(when he doesn't score/assist in a match), and last but not least Fergie. It's his fault for getting it wrong.

Or just blame the Glazers :D

I miss him, I get the feeling he won't be the same player he was though after the injury. Not always that straight forward for a player so heavily reliant on pace and power.

Twitter saying Udinese to bid on him in summer!

Goal.com has some quotes supposedly from Fergie:

Ferguson also appears willing to keep his man. Speaking to the press on Thursday, Ferguson said: "It is difficult to assess Antonio Valencia because he is doing very well, he is in contact training now.

"He has been taking part in all the sessions, so it is just that decision to play him in terms of his own confidence after such a long time out. It could be two weeks. We are hopeful."

How do quotes about his return from injury have any relation to a story about another club being after him?

Oh wait, goal.com

If those quotes are true Valencia is pretty much ready to go. But do you just throw him to the wolves after being out most of the season?

He should get some games for the reaserves, build up the confidence then have him back.

Hmm. Wolves could do with him to help escape relegation.

Back in First Team training today :D

Good to see. Though he's likely to pick up some of those niggling muscle injuries you get after along time out.

:D

..caps.

They say a healed broken bone is stronger than before the break, truth or myth?
