Argentina NT

Tonight is Benedetto's 'Martin Palermo' moment.

He's going to miss 3 penalties.

What time does the Argentina match kick off UK time?

Pretty average starting eleven. Who/what the feck is papu and why is Benedetto starting ahead of Dybala?

What a fairly random useless memory that is.

And I still remember watching it . I thought he'd be the Argentinian Vieri.

South American qualifying is an absolute joke, Brazil & Argentina would almost have to not want to qualify in order to miss out.
So? It's still almost always the most interesting and exciting region for World Cup qualifying every four years.

The tight structure means that there is always places up for grabs in the last round of games and the home advantage some of these sides have due to factors not present in other regions such as geology mean thatthere's very few easy games for any of the bigger sides.

It's hardly a surprising line-up if you've watched any of Argentina's recent qualifiers.

I saw their last one and everyone outside Messi and Mascherano was awful.
Even if the chemistry isn't great, they need goals, and they have Dybala, Aguero, Icardi, and Higuain on the bench. It makes no sense.

Yeah, similar reaction when ever i see the team sheet but usually at least you have Di Maria or someone who "masks" the shitness with a shiny name even though in the end it does just that, masks.

Isn't Aguero injured?

One of them always struggles. I'd argue the European format is more failure proof for the superpowers. Unless you are the unlucky sod in the odd group (Italy w/Spain) you have a ticket reserved and a get out of jail playoff if some other NT hits a bit of form.

Bad patch? Injuries? No worries, unless it's the big decider with AN Other you can easily scrape through Andorra, Faroe or Latvia in your group. You can also try new tactics, emerging players... in Conmebol every game is on a knife edge so tinkering can be very costly.

There's more room to recover from dropping points but a far greater likelihood of dropping them. I'd take the challenge and excitement here over England's processions every day.

Their defense is simply atrocious. I'm glad they're going to the world cup, but with that defense I don't see them going very far.

Past 10 years really!! It's sad he can't lift a trophy.

Impressive... being down after 1 min with that kind of pressure I expected a full meltdown from their defense.

They have several months to sort themselves out. On top of that, people are gonna overlook them. I’m not sleeping on them come WC time. This scenario is very similar to 2002 Brazil.

Very true. We have seen so many teams going to big tournaments in bad shape only for them to get some momentum going as the tournament progresses. International football can be very much about things clicking in those few weeks during the summer and it definitely helps when you have arguably the best of all time in your ranks.

This is not only a cliche, it's also a complete myth.

Mascherano, Otamendi, Mercado, Musacchio and Rojo are all quality defenders. Yes, today they had a brainfade but that can happen to even the best defences.

Anyone who has watched Argentina in the past 4 years will know that it's not the defence that is the problem.

It's a cliche for a reason, and a myth that has shown to be true on more than just tonight's occasion. I don't think those are bad players at all, but like the rest of the team they play far below their level with the NT. With an already shaky midfield, that defense is going to be tested and I'm not convinced they're going to cope with that during the world cup.

The defense was the best part of Argentina's team at the 2014 World Cup, 2015 Copa, and 2016 Copa.

2018 Argentina Line-Up

Argentina don't have any good fullbacks. However, they have plenty of good centerbacks and hard-working wingers. That's why a 3-5-2 with wingbacks is the best formation to fit the team.

Bench:

Romero
Musacchio - Fazio - Mascherano
Lamela - Biglia - Banega - Paredes - Correa
Aguero - Icardi

Fact I heard today: England haven't lost a qualifier in Euros or World Cup since 2009 when they lost to Ukraine which I think was a dead rubber for England. Haven't won a knock out game in that time, think they've 4 total wins in 4 tournaments in that period.

It's tougher than European qualifiers as all 10 teams are actually decent. Bolivia and Venezuela, the worst teams in CONMEBOL are still about the level of third pot in UEFA.

You could also say that the likes of Germany or Spain would have to want to not qualify to miss out, they steamroll teams way more than any South American team.

Put Icardi or Aguero in for Lanzini and push them up front while pushing Messi back into AM with Di Maria in midfield, and that's a scarily good team.

I was worried about Di Maria not working in a 2 man midfield. Of course, another potential option is to play in a diamond (Sampaoli played that formation with Chile).

Sampaoli has 244 days to turn a group of very good individuals into a functioning team. I'm not expecting them to win the World Cup, but they should at least be able to play good football with or without Messi.

With Lanzini or Di Maria in midfield, that sounds like an awful lot of midfield work for Enzo Perez. And the guy says wingbacks he's put in there aren't even full backs?

Amazing options in attack, but the rest of the squad seems unimpressive.
