Arsenal vs. Manchester United

He hasn't been playing on the wing though, so that's not really true. Which you can see in all those heat maps people keep posting to complain about him playing on the wing.
My gripe isn't that, of course he's not actually playing as a 'winger', the issue for me is that we insist on playing 4-4-2 (or whatever variation of that this is) even with him in the side. I thought we signed Mata to try something new, instead, we signed Mata and basically swapped him with Januzaj and continued as per normal, with a completely ineffective Valencia on the right to compensate.

Or he could change the system. Don't see Arsenal dropping their best players for so called hard workers.

And play how exactly?

How would he play Rooney, RVP, Mata and Januzaj in a team without atleast two of them having to do significant defensive work?

I don't think I've ever seen a more pessimistic match day thread.
This saddens me.

he definitely isnt playing in his best position either.

Will have to see how it works but don't like the idea of Valencia and mata playing. That only suits Valencia because if mata tucks in on the left then he's on his weaker foot and if he's not allowed to tuck in then it's a waste.

Still biggest thing as usual is where Rooney plays, we need him deeper, it's not working for any one him and rvp both trying to lead the line.
Moyes has a hard on for Valencia I think. Our style of play ONLY suits him and Young, and maybe Rooney to an extent (although Rooney would perform in any style). Everyone else is more suited to a passing game, and playing through the defence. Our team, United in general actually, is just anti-Moyes.

I'd like to see the team shape become more of a 4-3-3 with Valencia tucking in and Mata joining van Persie and Rooney in a front three.

What's the point in Valencia tucking in though? All he can do is go outside his man. Kagawa would be much more effective.

Why is that a bad thing though? I'd prefer to have two of them doing defensive work than having a two man midfield and having Valencia out there.

I take it Cazorla and Ozil are renowned for their hard work? We play 2 holding midfielders, heck Wilshere is always going forward. It could easily work with Januzaj, Rooney and Mata off RVP. What is the obsession with always playing Young or Valencia? Full backs offer enough width.

What's so upsetting about Mata playing left? Is it any different to City using Silva on the left? Mata made his name playing on the left. He's very good there.

I doubt we'll set up as a proper 4-4-2 anyway. We never do. We don't have the midfield mobility to support it. Carrick and Cleverley will sit deep, Mata isn't going to stay out wide left. He will drift and roam, and probably interchange with Rooney. Both will drop deep and attack as necessary, and RVP will be up top on his own, though will likely be plenty involved. Valencia will hug the right.

If anything it sounds more like 4-2-3-1, with Mata narrow on the left and Valencia wide on the right, and Rooney behind RVP. It's been a rarity this season that Rooney has played as an advanced striker alongside RVP. He's always much deeper.

I actually wish we had the strength and mobility in midfield to play a proper 4-4-2, but we just don't.

he definitely isnt playing in his best position either.
Should we drop Rooney who has been our best player this season to appease fans who don't want Mata to play anywhere else than behind the striker? Or should we sacrifice van Persie?

As long as Mata isn't asked to stay on the wing the whole game there is no issue here.

Fukk, I have to miss the first half. Please keep calm and carry on without me!

Is any different to any top side?
You mean has any other top side played the same starting 11 twice? Of course. Even we were never like this before. Most teams have a set strongest 11 that they always put out for the biggest games, and then rotate 2 or 3 players at most for other games, because of injuries and what not. There is always a set starting 11 when everyone is fully fit though. Moyes clearly still has no clue with us.

He plays that sort of role for his country, doesn't he? He has a fantastic engine and can bully anyone off the ball. In fact he'd probably offer more in that sort of role than on the wing currently.

Anyway, we'll see what happens. I remain hopeful we can nick a point or three here, for some reason.

Would love our luck to turn here but midfield way too immobile, Arse will scythe through it with ease. I actually think wing play and crossing is our best chance here. Get the big fella Fellaini up front.

My expectations are at an all time low. I feel like we have nothing to lose here.

Yeah and ultimately you think surely now is the time to play as strong as we can and that doesn't include Valencia. People always seem we need their defensive strength but if we had two attackers who weren't so reliant on their fullbacks then they wouldn't have to push up as much, not to mention we would be a lot more potent in attack and so they might think twice about over committing.

Still even if we played januzaj and mags they'd probs end up being told to get wide and Rooney wouldn't be in a position to bring them in centrally.

Dunno about where he plays for Ecuador to be honest. He's supposed to be a winger though and always has been with us. It's a sad state of affairs that he's become so unreliable that we should use him as a brute, bullying people off the ball.

People are obsessed with wingers who offer more defensively. If you have great attacking options you find a way to play them.

Interaction between RVP and Rooney could be key. They're beginning to look like an old married couple who don't have sex any more.

I wanna tell you, I may as well do, about a boy who can do anything (then gets dropped!); He comes Belgium, his name is Adnan, JANUZAJ, JANUZAJ, JANUZAJ!!!

Given the number of injuries we've had, and the fact that we signed Feliani & Mata part way into the season means our best 11 hasn't played yet

I'm excited about this game. That 81 crosses record is there to be shot at. But can we get enough possession to threaten it? If we get into the 90s it'll be a marvelous achievement.

Yeah you'd think so. Especially now more then ever United and Moyes especially needs a win, to not only end the bad run, but for him to show that he has what it takes to turn bad form around, get results against other big teams, or play well. Anyways, its not like Valencia or Young are good defensively. They aren't. It's like picking januzaj who would be like 9/10 going forward and then 5/10 defensively, and then Young/Valencia who are like 4/10 going forward and 6/10 defensively. The amount of defensive mistakes Valencia has made this season has been pretty ridiculous as well.

Nope we should find a balance that is best for the team. Not for one single player. Remember Mourinho froze out mata cause he didnt fit the balance of the side. Fergie knew it as well which is why he was clearly setting up Moyes to sell Rooney.

I've never been less enthused about a big match. In these big games I'm usually shitting bricks right about now but it's become a chore watching us this season.
