Arsenals chances of a top 4 finish this season

Arsenal can finish fourth, but it's the first time I can say it's not completely up to them. They used to be good enough to finish fourth as long as they did their bit, but right now it's anyone's game with them, Liverpool and Spurs. That's how badly they've fallen.

Too cocky jocky. We'll easily finish 4th.
You might be a contender for 4th, that remains to be seen. But "easily"? No way Jose ... this is the worst Arsenal squad for many years.

They managed 68 points last year on form far beyond where they are now. We are still only a short way into the season but if it goes another five games and they are performing as they currently are then from Christmas they would require near title winning form to get into a champions league place.

Of course they have played Liverpool and Man United already but today they conceded four against a team who hasn't won this season, a team who recently struggled to score a goal against Everton even when they had two penalties. Arsenal had a stroke of luck in the fact that an international break allowed the squad to drift away and come back to play at home against a team who were promoted and were struggling to score a goal, but they tried their best to screw that one up as well.

At the rate they are going they will struggle to get much more than 25 points by Christmas.
Yeah, I was thinking more like 30 points by Christmas / year end. I've had a look through their fixtures, they've really got to start performing if they have any hope of maintaining Champions League football.

Bolton (H) - Win
Bolton are on a shocker too, Arsenal at home despite Bolton often being one of their 'bogey sides' I'd still expect Arsenal to sneak this one.

Tottenham (A) - Lose
Arsenal have a mid-week UCL game before this and I'd fancy Spurs to beat them at White Hart Lane. Could get a draw though.

Sunderland (H) - Win
Sunderland's strike force seems rather cack now in theory, but we'll see how it goes. I'd expect Arsenal to beat Sunderland at the Emirates though, even when they're leaking so many goals.

Stoke (H) - Draw
Stoke have been impressive, this may be a ground where their style is less suited, but again with Arsenal playing a mid-week game, I can see Stoke getting a result.

Chelsea (A) - Lose
Chelsea haven't been exciting, but they've been doing enough. As the season goes on they'll get stronger and by the end of October I can see them beign far too much for Arsenal.

West Brom (H) - Win
I was impressed with West Brom's performances, but they're not getting the results. They play football and Arsenal can still do that so I'd expect a win for Arsenal.

Norwich (A) - Win
Would still have to fancy Arsenal regardless of form.

Fulham (H) - Win
I'd give them this one too, just about, despite this being after the return Dortmund game.

Wigan (A) - Win
Again, Wigan aren't very good. However, this is four wins in a row and despite the opposition it could be a bit much for this current Arsenal side. Wouldn't be surprised if one of these four pinch a draw.

Everton (H) - Win
Everton could get a draw but I don't think they'd beat Arsenal at the Emirates.

Man City (A) - Lose
City away would be too much IMO.

Aston Villa (A) - Draw
Fancy Villa to improve as the season goes on.
That's 27 points before Christmas if they can match that, then they have games against Wolves and QPR before the year ends which I'd expect them to get at least 4 points from. So, if they can match that form in the second half of the season, 60~ points is a realistic end total. They might even do significantly better than that, or perhaps slightly worse. We'll just have to see but on current form, yes, you're right. It doesn't look like they'll manage much.

I retract my previous statement of 4th.

Now thinking 6th.

The rot at the back to too much.

Ramsey sums up those chances at the moment.

The league really begins to take shape after 8 matches.

If Arsenal are more than 10 points behind the fourth team then, I doubt they will get to 4th spot. I did not see the match. Understand they collapsed in the second half.

Still think they will be thereabouts in the end.

Arsenal will finish in top 4
No problem

Considering the big clubs all look improved this year do you really think you are capable of 70 points? From now until the end of the season you will have to take two points from every three (66 from 99 to be precise) in order to achieve that.

I had my doubts over them getting 4th but despite the loss today I think Arsenal will finish 4th. Once both defenders have been bedded into the PL then they'll be fine.

If you look at em their performances haven't been bad, just mental lapses in the back, they'll be fine.

Liverpool lost to stoke, don't forget.

Benayoun and Arteta were both good pick ups for them. Would obv rather them get 4th over liverpool anyways, so I'll be rooting them on from now on.

No reason to panic IMO...yes we're shipping goals but we're creating plenty too. Not getting much luck either.

RVP and Wilshire, Vermaelen when fit.

Ìt's a question of time before RVP turns into RIP and asks for a transfer...

as for Arsenals chances of finishing fourth - they still have enough quality to easily be 6th as a worst case scenario - byt they are nowhere near good enough to be top 3.

So I agree with the guy above here who said it's not really up to them - imo Liverpool are stronger and have a much more balanced squad.

they might get 4th place - but they are nowhere near my favourite to claim that spot

Don't you think that's a bit of a blinkered way of looking at the situation ?

Arsenal's defensive frailties have been years in the making. This is reflected in the goals conceded column from the past 4 years:

2008 - 31

2009 - 37

2010 - 41

2011 - 43

It's difficult not to see that trend continuing this season. It's also difficult to see how a side could concede over 43 goals, & still make a CL spot - I feel Arsenal's chances this season will rely on events elsewhere (Spurs & Liverpool)

The defenders Arsenal have are not individually bad ones. They haven't played enough together, it's going to take time. The question is will they gel quickly enough or is this season a right off for the top four place they need.

The new left back is getting caught behind the line. The German looks slow and needs to play offside well because he won't be able to keep pace with most strikers. They are going to have to drill this like the Arsenal of old if he isn't going to get exposed
.

I've got impression that Liverpool is doing Arsenal (quite good start, shit finish) this season and Arsenal is doing Liverpool (shit start, better finish).

Oh, feck that. Liverpool will feck up their chances to finish top 4 in December.

This is exactly how rumours start over the internet.

When posters such as yourself imply Arsenal and Liverpool players are shagging.

I think Vermalen is slightly overrated. Positionally I think he's quite suspect which is a trend with Arsenal defenders these days. He certainly wouldn't get in our first xi.

In a PL XI? Not a chance.

Well the OP did say "United, City, Chelsea aside".

It's too early in the season to write Arse off. I mean cmoon it's only 4-5 matches played...

When Spurs beat the dippers today, Arse would be 3 points off Pool and 2 points off them. So really they are pretty much in contention even with this awful start of the season.

RVP and Wilshire, Vermaelen when fit.

The team would be something like this in my opinion:

Reina
Sagna Jagielka Cahill Baines
Lennon Gerrard Modric Bale
RVP Suarez

I think Wilshere might edge into midfield by the end of the season, but not quite yet. Vermaelen has barely played 40 games in the Premier League, difficult to say he's better than Cahill/Jagielka or even Shawcross (although again, he could well be after another season).

A Gerrard-Modric midfield is recipe for disaster IMO.

If you ignore last season because of injuries he was awesome 07-09, don't let his Scouse roots cloud that.

True, but so would a Wilshere-Modric midfield and I can't think of many who would give it more balance. The team is more like 11 of the best players put together, rather than the 11 players who would work best together.

Tbh I would go for something like this

Reina
Sagna-Jagielka-Vermealen-Baines
Wilshere-Modric
Gerrard-Suarez-Bale
RVP
