Smalling is our best defender.

Our best natural defender, maybe. Evans is better in terms of all round game though and LVG seems like the kind of manager who wants his CBs to have an all round game. This means Smalling will have to improve a lot on the ball.

In today's market he's worth £40 million easily, but considering our poor midfield and how much we'd benefit from him he's worth £50+ million to us to be honest.

These ball playing defenders thing is such a big hype, if you have one ball playing defender its already enough, I would prefer a defender who can actually defend, to be good on the ball should be a bonus.

No, it's not just 'a big hype', it's a really important quality in a defender. Smalling genuinely hurts the overall game of teams he plays for at the moment because he can't distribute the ball effectively and panic if put under any kind of pressure when in possession. It makes it much harder for the midfield to get any kind of control over the game when he keeps hoofing it aimlessly over their heads.

And it's not always the case that having a more technically comfortable defender next to him will 'make up for it'. At some point he's going to have to distribute the ball himself, he won't always be able to hand it over to his partner.

Anyway sorry I've no idea why we're discussing this in the Vidal thread, I'll stop now.

Who is better? The others may be better on the ball, but that doesnt make you a better defender, defensively Smalling is better than Jones, Evans.

Evans has achieved much more than Smalling including being a key member of a title winning side. Being good on the ball has more merits than most people seem to give it credit for, in modern day football teams play out from the back defenders are expected to build attacks the same way forwards defend from the front. If you're CB's are poor on the ball you'll struggle to play progressive football. Sure if you want defenders to sit on the 18 yard line win headers and make clearances then Smalling's your man but there's a reason why Hummels and Thiago Silva are seen as the best in the world and it's their ability to bring the ball forward/defend vs pace and play 1v1 which sets them apart. Evans/Jones are better at most aspects of defending just not the physical ones.

He's not back until the 28th of July as mentioned. Rumours are that we've already agreed personal terms with him anyway so that doesn't really matter. Hopefully until then, we can agree a fee and such before he returns.

I can definitely see this dragging until a few weeks prior to deadline day unfortunately.

Oh i agree LVG has the time, the winning mentality and the experience to take united to winning ways again. He has proved that with the Netherlands in taking them to the semi-finals in this world cup. I'm just saying fans need to keep their feet on the ground. One top player doesn't solve on what happened last season. Vidal is a really good player and can really strengthen that midfield, but that just one problem solved over the other problems that need to be sorted. Most importantly the style of play, not once i seen united play a decent style of play last season, so Van Gaal needs to get them playing attractive style of football again.

Do you doubt that he will tho? I dont? I think initially he make sure we get used to winning again, and that might not always be pretty, but confidence is king. He'll make sure we start well (points wise) then the flair will improve as confidence grows

There’s no way we refuse to pay 34m for Vidal, especially considering our recent business (Mata, Herrera, Shaw) and this new deal from Adidas.
I see 2 options:
a) The fee involved is much, much higher
b) It’s done

Probably the former. To be continued I guess.

Theyre just being realistic.

Add me to that list.

If you're being realistic you can still choose an option which facilitates a 'Yes, i'd like us to sign him' mindset.

It would be great to happen in the first season and his record shows he is capable if this but I'd be happy building a team this season, top four finish and challenging next season! If it happens then amazing if not we will challenge next season!

Oh I'd be happy with that too. I just think we'll be much better than most people expect. Get off to a flyer, get confidence up, then steam roller our way to a 21st title - I dont like having too many gaps in my End Of Season Review DVD collection, some come on VDG, chop chop :D

What's the most Van Gaal has spent on a player, out of interest?

You don't want Vidal at Utd? Why?

Course id love him here.

Not one part of me thinks he ll come here and actually dont think we could entice him,not the way the other big hitting CL clubs will be able to,not this year we wont anyway.

Its got muppet fiasco written all over it and Thiago nearly killed me last year.

We ll get another couple of players to suit van Gaals vision im sure,Vidal is just a step to far for us i think.

This is so fecking on. Reminds me of Rooney transfer that way it's panning out.

All we need is an evil/bored mod to edit the title to 'Arturo Vidal - Fee Agreed' for a caf crash and an internet overload...:devil::devil:

No. He shouldn't "stop posting that shit". That shit is good. Real good. Your shit, however, stinks.

You've gone and done it now...

I've been told I can post this here by the Staff:

But, they all voted for "don't want him". I understand why you're being pessimistic about the deal, but tbh, I think we did have the Thiago deal until Moyes told Woodward he wanted Fabregas instead. Van Gaal appears to be the one who chose to go after Vidal in the first place (imo, he decided not to go for Kroos) so the situations are probably quite different. There also hasn't been any reported interest as of yet from any other club. I could potentially se Bayern becoming interested, but Vidal and Bayern don't appear to be on good terms, Madrid have bought Kroos, Monaco appear to have lost interest in spending large amounts of money on big players, Chelsea appear to be satisfied with their midfield, Barca don't have the funds for another expensive signing this season and PSG will risk being reprimanded because of Financial Fair Play if they splash out on another massive deal. Honestly the only team I could see competing with us for Vidal is City, but that would only be if they decide to sell Yaya and I'm not sure who would buy him. Without selling Yaya, I think City would struggle to meet FFP.

So there doesn't appear to be a great possibility of any other big clubs going in for him. Bayern could still be a threat, but from what I've heard, Vidal seemed to annoy them when he chose Juventus over them. They also have the best midfield in club football. One could argue with Kroos leaving a space could open up, but they still have all of Schweinsteger, Martinez, Thiago, Gotze, Muller, Alaba and Lahm who can all play in the 3 central midfield positions. If they were to sign another cm, it would probably be as backup.

I see your logic but i reckon,if i was to bet on him leaving Juve, hed head to the Catalan reshuffle.

Another poster and I discussed this earliar with he Busquets,Iniesta,Mascherano, and whatever else is coming of the Masia conveyor belt, would be thumping midfield. As for them getting 40 million to grab him, come on its barcelona.

Hopefully he stays at Juve, and van Gaal taps him up for next summer,im just a bit to grinchy about somone like Vidal happening this summer.
