That would be the team I want to see, except for Dong.

I think we'll play 5 in the midfield, I just don't know who that 5th midfielder is going to be.

Maybe Brown with Pique at CB, Evans on the left and O'Shea in the midfield. Or even Pique in the midfield with Brown and Evans in the center.

I think Anderson will play if we play 5 in midfield.

Yeah, could be.

If that is the case, I'd much rather see Dong, I just don't want Anderson to play with Liverpool coming up in the weekend.

I know he is young, but I still would hate something to happen in a completely useless fixture, for both teams at that.

Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he will hand Champions League starts to some of his youngsters when Manchester United face Roma on Wednesday night, but will they be able to cope with the pressure?

Last time Ferguson believed in his latest breed of youngsters, they were embarrassed by Championship side Coventry City and unceremoniously dumped out of the Carling Cup.

Now facing much superior opposition in Europe’s elite competition, it will prove to be a serious test for the youngsters.

Ahead of the game though, Ferguson remains relaxed, safe in the knowledge that the result is academic, as United have secured top spot and Roma have already qualified as runners-up.

"There's no doubt we'll take some young kids," he told Manchester United’s official radio station.

"We've won the group and Roma are guaranteed second place, so there's no issue with us potentially affecting the outcome of the group.

"We wanted to give the young boys experience playing in the Carling Cup but they let themselves down against Coventry. Now there's a chance for the likes of Jonny Evans, Gerard Pique, Danny Simpson and Chris Eagles to elevate themselves. We know all about their ability but this is an opportunity for them to prove themselves.

"They won't be on their own, though. They'll have back-up from players like John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Louis Saha, Nani and Anderson. Cristiano Ronaldo might possibly be involved as well.”

The game could be seen as an experiment in the quality of United’s youth system, but Ferguson still wants to win, irrelevant of his starting line-up.

"We're not in the habit of sending teams out to lose. We'll be sending out a time that we think is good enough to win."

Rooney to captain United

Striker to lead out youthful squad in Rome

Wayne Rooney will captain Manchester United for the first time against Roma in the UEFA Champions League.

The striker is part of an inexperienced United squad which has travelled to the Italian capital for Wednesday's final group game.

And, with Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs all missing from the party, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Rooney will be skipper.

"He has been pestering me for quite a while now, so I have given in," said Ferguson.

Wes Brown and Michael Carrick are the only other players who started Saturday's 4-1 win over Derby County to have flown out to Rome.

Louis Saha, John O'Shea and Darren Fletcher will also add their experience to the squad, with Ferguson looking to give his younger players a chance.

Opportunity

The manager told Manchester United Radio: "We've won the group and Roma are guaranteed second place, so there's no issue with us potentially affecting the outcome of the group.

"We wanted to give the young boys experience playing in the Carling Cup, but they let themselves down against Coventry. Now there's a chance for the likes of Jonny Evans, Gerard Pique, Danny Simpson and Chris Eagles to elevate themselves.

It´s been a while since Rooney and Saha started a game together up front isn´t it? Can´t wait to see it, always rated that parnership.

Would be good to see players like Kieran Lee, Fabien Brandy or Sam Hewson get some minutes, but even if they don´t it´ll be a fantastic experience for them just to travel with the squad to Rome. But judging from that squad I think the starting XI will be something like this:

-----------Kuszczak
Simpson - Brown - Pique - O´shea
Eagles - Fletcher - Carrick - Nani
---------Saha - Rooney

Bench:
Heaton
Eckersley
Evans
Lee
Hewson
Brandy
Dong

Looking at that bench I think Evans and Dong will get minutes, surely. Who the third sub will be I´m not sure but I think Kieran Lee is very likely, he´s captain of the reserves and has been playing superbly for the last couple of years. Has also played well when given a chance with the main team, scored the winner against Crewe in the Carling Cup and was also quite solid (although a bit nervous) against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last season.

btw, which Eckersley is that?

Anyone have any clue as to what the Roma starting XI could be like? I suppose they would want to avenge the 7-1 but i'm just hoping for a comfortable game with no injuries.

Play the ressies!

-----------Kuszack---------
Simpson-Pique-Evans-O'Shea
Eagles-Carrick-Fletcher-Nani
---------Saha-Dong--------

We'll get hammered - 4-0 to Roma

Hope Brandy get's a chance. Can't wait to see him in first team action.

Welbeck should have been in Rome instead of Dong...

Why is Rooney even playing? Save him for the Liverpool game.

He can be substituted after first half for safety.

Hopefully. I'm just a little worried as Roma are a very physical team, and the last thing we need is Rooney injured before the Liverpool match.

Saying that, I can't wait to see Rooney as captain.

That is not in keeping with Fergies newest comments from today nor the squad list for the match.
And it frankly didn't make sense to include Anderson and Ronaldo - Rooney I can understand as he needs match fitness after his injury.

So the newest information is good news.

The Polish International Keeper (PIG)

Polish International Goalkeeper [PIG]

too bad that isn't what it really stands for. but i find that acronym satisfying none the less.

as i'm sure we all know, rooney is gonna captain the team. he is so damned proud, can't stand the idea of us getting beat with a run out team.

let's hope he only plays a half and dong gets on to sell some shirts.

the fewer regulars played the better, game means exactly naught. let them win 7-0 so they can get over their vendetta and we don't have to worry about anyone else getting stabbed.

Im looking forward to seeing some of the younger players in action again. Even if we lose it, Im not that bothered, so much more important to prepare the players for Liverpool.

What Pogue was saying earlier about Rooney makes sense though - he and Saha will both be better for having played rather than being rested.

It would be nice to see a bit of Dong as well though, even if its just for 20 minutes or so.
