Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he will hand Champions League starts to some of his youngsters when Manchester United face Roma on Wednesday night, but will they be able to cope with the pressure?
Last time Ferguson believed in his latest breed of youngsters, they were embarrassed by Championship side Coventry City and unceremoniously dumped out of the Carling Cup.
Now facing much superior opposition in Europe’s elite competition, it will prove to be a serious test for the youngsters.
Ahead of the game though, Ferguson remains relaxed, safe in the knowledge that the result is academic, as United have secured top spot and Roma have already qualified as runners-up.
"There's no doubt we'll take some young kids," he told Manchester United’s official radio station.
"We've won the group and Roma are guaranteed second place, so there's no issue with us potentially affecting the outcome of the group.
"We wanted to give the young boys experience playing in the Carling Cup but they let themselves down against Coventry. Now there's a chance for the likes of Jonny Evans, Gerard Pique, Danny Simpson and Chris Eagles to elevate themselves. We know all about their ability but this is an opportunity for them to prove themselves.
"They won't be on their own, though. They'll have back-up from players like John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Louis Saha, Nani and Anderson. Cristiano Ronaldo might possibly be involved as well.”
The game could be seen as an experiment in the quality of United’s youth system, but Ferguson still wants to win, irrelevant of his starting line-up.
"We're not in the habit of sending teams out to lose. We'll be sending out a time that we think is good enough to win."
