Must have forgotten about it, what was it, 1, 2 games, what?
Subbed Rashford off for Young then ended up losing 0-3 to Tottenham... Quite memorable if you ask me

Yeah I think van Gaal played him upfront against Spurs and played Rashford on the left instead, when surely you could just play Young at LW and Rashford at ST but that's van Gaal for you...

Did well for England as a no 10 actually. Then he missed a penalty against Italy and didn't get a look until last year.

When did he play as CF?
Spurs away, Bournemouth home (scored a goal) and FA Cup final for a few minutes. Oh and 2014/15 preseason for a few games. Scored a couple against LA Galaxy as well.

I think he started as a 10 with Berbatov upfront against Benfica in 2011. And he started as a CM for in the last game of the 2014/15 season. It's mental in how many positions he played:lol:

Don't know if it was this game, and I can't remember the players involved, but I seem to remember one game under van Gaal that drove me nuts, where we ended up with something like a midfielder at left back, a right back at centre back, a left back at right back, a forward in midfield, another on the wing, and a winger up front. I remember posting something either here or on twitter about how we could literally have got away with just one or two out of position players, and instead most of our line-up was.

As for Young, I'm still not convinced at all by him at left-back. Thought he was doing well this World Cup, but Croatia clearly identified him as a weak point and exploited it. He's alright against weaker opposition, but any team with quality out wide will dominate his flank.

He got exposed by Rebic a couple of times vs Croatia. Unfortunately I think he is not the elite level of player (anymore?) we strive to have, if we want to win trophies. A good servant to the club, maybe a rotation option for another year.

I don't like Mourinho's comments on him coming back from holiday early, it's not right to try to pressure him like that. He's 33 coming off the back of a long season and a full World Cup run, he needs time off and rest.

Yeah, don’t like that at all either. That’s classic Mourinho, like pressuring Smalling and Jones to play injured last year.

Young needs his rest especially since Mou is seemingly not interested in signing a LB but more keen to add a 7th CB. He’ll have a long season ahead of him at 33, off the back of an extremely long one. If he gets gassed by December or suffers injuries Mourinho’ll then be moaning about his lack of players or shifting the blame on them, pressuring them to play through injury.

I have a confession to make, I want him on the right wing, he is full of energy, can beat his man and he isn't a bad crosser from the right, he over hits them from the left. Then we can bring an actual left back whoever that is.

Aiii, and the heatstroke claims another one. :(

that wouldnt be wise considering how much speed young has lost, he would be more effective from the left for sure, cutting to the centre but we all know how the situation is there on that side

Okay, Luke Shaw is getting back to his form (hopefully it will continue), and our RW is a disaster.

Young is old, but can do a job attacking wise. He can use his crossing abilities for Lukaku and he is a winger after all?

He can also be trusted by Mourinho defensively. One season on the right will be better than Valencia on the right wing if Dalot takes his position on RB.

I am afraid he has played LB for so long, Mourinho and Young both forgot LB was not what made Young a footballer. I am baffled why he was not used once as a winger last year, as he has great crossing abilities that we lack.

He is better than all our full backs. So, it's better to use him in that role instead of giving him yet another new position to play. I know he was a winger in the past but when was the last time he played on the right regularly? Not since he came to United. Anyway, even if we decide to play other full backs ahead of him, he is the only proper backup we have for those positions.

He has always been a left winger, not sure about the idea of putting him as a right one. Think it'll restrict a lot of his attacking power. May be a balanced right back.

Re-watch a few of games from last season and it's blindly obvious.

Overall Young is better at defending, crossing, attacking, reading the game, being consistent.

Shaw has had a handful of good games in a United shirt, I think he can become the first choice for RB but I've not seen him do anything that makes me think Young wouldn't be able to do.
Sorry Steve I don’t really agree at all. Being consistent for sure that is one but Young isn’t good at defending and his crossing has been awful. Mostly all over hit or even the fact he just cuts it back kills so many moves. I’d like to see him at RB so he can whip in crosses earlier than he does on the left or even if he would just attack the space at LB and put in crosses off his left I think the team would function so much better.

Valencia and young both have this thing where it seems like they hit this invisible wall they can’t go past which is around the 18 yarder and it really bugs my happiness  I seriously believe if they would go at this space the team would improve dramatically, so often they stop, the odd occasion they venture in is when the box is fully packed and the defence has set up and they are working a triangle. They rarely seem to take the risk of taking the man on and making the clinical decision for the team. Shaw showed last year he could go at this space and if it was a crowded box he had the intelligence to pick out dangerous passes. I just don’t think the gulf in quality is that great and like I said to another user it’s Youngs confidence and experience that maybe slightly edges him at the moment.

I'd agree, which is why I think he is better at attacking/defending/crossing etc. Shaw is not far behind but he needs to step up his game a bit. He is being pushed out of his position by someone 10 years older and not in their natural position.

Also the overlaps, Shaw is better at that granted and I do prefer watching us with full backs who overlap but I just think at this current stage. I'm more confident with Young.

Difficult one, because I think with time and experience Shaw will be the no.1 pick but he needs to right games and we can't risk him against top sides yet.

If we played City in the League tomorrow, and every player was fit and ready. Who would you have at RB ? Neither option wrong I'm probably a bit more risk adverse when it comes to the League.

Your last point/question is really good, damn you  the purist inside me says Shaw as I’d want us to basically say ok let’s play football and go toe to toe. But the realist would go with Young. I often think back to the Newcastle game where Shaw was getting overrun, he would at times have 2 or 3 because Pogba and Sanchez weren’t coming back, if that was Young that would never have happened, or wouldn’t happen for long, he’d have given them what for, in game experience and confidence.

 I know it's annoying. Maybe we just need to fully commit with Shaw and let him own the LB spot deal with the bad....and hope he comes out good!

I like Young too. Any player that does what the manager asks and doesn't throw toys out the pram is a good egg in my eyes. He got converted to a RB and just gave it everything. At his age he was probably just feeling blessed to be at one of the biggest clubs in the world and would have given 100% in whatever position.

I looked at his performances thread last season and during the 2nd half of the season there was almost a consensus that he wasn't good enough and a new left back should on the top of our transfer list. Only 2 of his performances were viewed favorably. The swing in opinions that happened during the summer is very confusing to me.

I really hope Shaw could nail that position and Young gets relegated to a cover for him or a rotation option with Valencia on the right till Dalot is ready.

We all know he will walk straight into the team as soon as he's fit. He is one of Jose's favourites.

I agree with the consensus here, I'm happy to see him back but would much rather he replace Darmian than Shaw in the starting XI.

Oh please, some of the comments on here. This is Manchester United! We don't need 'has been' wingers adapted to full backs. The role of a modern day full back is to get up and down the pitch. At any given moment they may need to attack or defend. Having bags of energy and unlimited fitness is key to this position. Being able to take on the opposing wing back, whilst also keeping him in your pocket, defending, holding position, delivery into the box, free kicks, corners...it really is one of the most important areas on the pitch, especially the way that we play, constantly shifting the ball out wide. Ashley Young has one trick. This is where he cuts inside (only has a right foot) and knocks an in-swinger towards the far post. 8 out of 10 times he misses everybody. I have nothing against the guy, he seems to be an influence in the dressing room, and Mourinho likes the way he is subservient to his tactics, but Lord God above, Crystal Palace have better wing-backs (on their bench). Fulham have one called Fosu Mensah! How he got into the England world cup squad was a real mystery to me. Croatia tore him to pieces. He should be nowhere near our first-team squad.

Christ knows how he's become the prominent player that he has for us but it'll be good to have him back due to lack of options. He'll do a much better than Darmian on the right.

This is kind of the thing do we as a team, fan base and the manager have the patience to deal with the inevitable mistakes, poor performance here and there with any of the talented youngsters we have.
Personally if we for the majority of this season played this 11, i’d be happy with that and a top 4 finish if they played a little more adventurous but I fail to see how with that line up we wouldn’t.

Throw in your Rashford, Mctominays from time to time I’d imagine a lot more people would probably take to Jose as it would be seen as working towards something. Dalot, probably would need a bit more care and taken in and out at times or played at RW if needed but Young on the right of that team doesn’t suck to me.

Brighton 3:2 Man Utd
18/19 season and Ashley Young is still a starting fullback for Manchester United. A symbol of how far we've fallen. Was awful today, need Valencia or Dalot to return asap.
